Telltale Games lowers prices

Episodic installments of Bone adventure series now lowered to CD-like price point of $12.99.

While the high cost of next-gen game development seems to be getting higher, episodic content is allowing some publishers to make their games cheaper. Telltale Games has announced that its Bone series of PC adventure games, formerly pushing the $20 price point, are now available for digital download for $12.99.

The first episode of Bone, Out from Boneville, was released for PCs last September. The second episode, The Great Cow Race, is currently scheduled for release later this month.

While the new price point was confirmed for all future episodes of Bone, a Telltale representative declined to comment on whether or not it would apply to the company's other announced episodic series, Sam and Max. The new price point is intended to compete directly with DVDs, music CDs, books, and cable TV, according to Telltale CEO Dan Connors.

Wait... is that Sam and Max as in Sam and Max Hit the Road?

If so.... then all is right with the world again.

I think the real benefit lies in how much this type of distribution can benefit small developers. That just might lead to a stronger variety of games, and allow developers to take more risks.

This sounds great but I'd rather play and beat a game within a few weeks rather than wait months for the next episode.

It's all happening folks, so brace yourself. Marketing budgets have been commited and plans made: the age of microtransactions and episodic content and digital delivery--and the other stuff that's fundamentally extraneous yet necessary to advancing the industry...it's all coming. The old gaming paradigms of "box near TV" and "games in store" have long since faded. It's all virtual property now, because there are people taking a cut at every angle and there are far more angles to explore through lower cost downloads (with iTunes and ringtones proving it beyond a doubt). It's happening in every industry; this one just happens to be primo territory and the new consoles primo receivers.

Nice. I hope Sam & Max becomes an XBLA download.

If many good games can be released at this price point, I wouldn't be surprised to see a backlash from other forms of entertainment; either that or they're going to have to lower their prices.

This kind of stuff with Xbox live's ease of use will be great. Give it a few more years I guess.
