You Are Empty E3 2004 Impressions
This intriguing first-person action game features a first-rate graphics engine.
Russian publishing company 1C is at E3 in force to display some of the best that the Russian software industry has to offer, and judging from You Are Empty, Russia has some pretty formidable programming talent.
You Are Empty is an intriguing first-person action game set in an alternate-history 1950s. The Cold War is on, but instead of nuclear weapons, the United States and Russia have engaged in a human race. That is, both sides are attempting to genetically modify the ultimate human being. But in the course of the research, lots of strange mutants evolved.
Developer Digital Spray Studios wrote the games graphics engine from scratch, and it certainly looks capable of going up against the best engines from developers such as Epic Games and Valve. It looks that good. Were told that the engine is highly scalable, capable of rendering as few as 50,000 polygons to 2 million polygons per frame.
The key thing about You Are Empty is that Digital Spray isnt trying to make a run-and-gun-style first-person shooter. Instead, the game is more about storytelling. In fact, the games name refers to the fact that while youll have a few guns in the game, youll always seem short of ammunition. But were told that youll experience a creepy, horror-style game with lots of atmosphere and quite a bit of humor; one of the mutants we encountered was an 8-foot-tall chicken.
The game is set in Moscow and Kiev, and the development team has spent a lot of time re-creating those locales. You Are Empty looks beautiful, but youll have to wait until 2005 to get a chance to play it.
