Shippin' Out 2/4-2/9: Winning 11, MVP 07

Konami's pro footballer and EA's college baseball sim join Super Mario World, the Sims Life Stories, and Root Beer Tapper on this week's docket.

This week, many gamers in the American Heartland are staying inside to avoid a nasty arctic cold snap. On the East Coast, abnormally warm weather has given way to the traditional February chill. On the West Coast, some of the first rainstorms of an unusually dry winter have finally arrived.

Luckily, there's a fairly robust release schedule this week to help those trapped indoors stave off cabin fever. Foremost among these is Winning Eleven: Pro Evolution Soccer 2007, the latest installment in Konami's acclaimed sports series. The franchise returns this week to the Xbox 360, PlayStation 2, and PlayStation Portable, and also makes its debut on the DS. A PlayStation 3 edition is due out later this year, and will be the first Pro Evo game for the platform.

If footie's not your thing, Electronic Arts is releasing an all-American game this week as well. MVP 07 NCAA Baseball, the only college baseball game on the market, will arrive exclusively on the PS2 for the budget price of $29.99. If you like your sports Canadian and/or extreme, then check out the Xbox and PS2 snowmobile racer SnoCross 2, which stars the Saskatchewan-born X-Games champ Blair Morgan.

It's also a decent week for Nintendo portable fans. Besides Winning Eleven, the DS will get Diddy Kong Racing (check out GameSpot's review for more) and Lunar Knights, the localized version of Bokura no Taiyou: Django and Sabata, the spiritual successor to the Boktai series. Last but not least, one of the top titles for the most venerable portable on the market, the Game Boy Advance, arrives in the form of Final Fantasy VI Advance, a reworked version of the classic SNES game (originally released in North America as Final Fantasy III).

Speaking of SNES games, the week sees the legendary SNES platformer Super Mario World arrive on the Wii's virtual console service. It'll be joined on the download service by Genesis actioner Gain Ground and the TurboGrafx-16 favorite Vigilante. The only other retro release due out is Root Beer Tapper on Xbox Live Arcade.

Though there aren't any PS3 releases set for this week, two other Sony platforms will be getting new games. Both Romance of the Three Kingdoms XI and Ar tonelico: Melody of Elemia are slated to come to the PS2, while the PSP will get Capcom Puzzle World and the aforementioned Winning Eleven: Pro Evolution Soccer 2007.

On the PC front, the highest-profile release is The Sims Life Stories, the new "laptop friendly," story-driven spin-off of EA's ever-popular series. Other notable PC releases include Blitzkrieg 2: Fall of the Reich, Alien Shooter: Vengeance, War Rock, and UFO: Afterlight.

What's with this information!, PES6 ( winning eleven ) has been out now for both 360 and PSP for approximatley 2-3 months ago, Gamespot has reviewed the 360 and PS2 versions already ( 2-3 months ago ), I'm still waiting for a PSP review. Unless this is a completly new version... if so why is it still being refered to as PES6! please explain Gamespot you're usually spot on when it comes to this info...

I always play PES with 6 stars since its too easy otherwise. The AI still sucks and the strategy commands are useless, I cant count how many times Ive been on a breakaway only to see my wingman run backwards rather than help me attack (he wasnt even close to being offsides since I was the one in front). Or if I pass the ball while running down the field so I can "one two" the defender only to have the guy who passes the ball immediately turn around and run back to midfield.

why not, i think i'll rent it to give it a second try since i wasn't convinced at all at 1st. and concerning the AI in Pro Evo, push the level to Top Player. Sure it might get harder (which is what we like ) but also Ur teammates are way more responsive , give good passes, and defend alot better than in, let's say, Regular. I keep my hopes up for Fifa as I'm not a hater, but they all failed me since the SNES Fifa96...

I think Fifa07 is more of a simulator than the new Winning Eleven (PES6). Your teammates in Fifa07 are Einsteins compared to the PES6 players and actually use strategy (sometimes), you can do much more realistic plays with through balls and passes which is where the real game in soccer is.

The dribbling and shooting is still quite a bit better on PES6, but everything else Fifa07 beats in a big way, especially teamwork and passing.

MVP 07 coming out on the PS2 only is total crap! 2K Sports has no clue how to make a decent baseball game. Looks like I'll be going with MLB 07: The Show for the PS2 and PSP again.

@iDIVIDEBYZER0 : I did try the Fifa07 and it's defo still not all that, Winning Eleven 10 is way more the hot stuff. Even the Pro Evo 6 version is more of a simulation than the always arcade type Fifa07... looks good, lots of licences, but the gameplay is still not there IMO. Also, the 360 version (of PES6) is sadly disappointing with several options chopped off, even if the game does look nice, the PS2 version still is the one to go for, and it also supports online...and for free. So untill the next one, which will most likely be released on all 3 next-gen platforms this summer in Japan (check on CVG, Seabass confirmed in an interview a Wii version in the works) this Pro Evo 6 will help try and keep the dust away from ma PS2.

Winning 11 not on PS3? GS says "TBA 2007"--but when? Isn't that a big title in some areas of the world? And not on the Wii (maybe they need a strap so you can attach the wand to your foot for kicking.
