Midway prepping Unreal comp

Chicago-based company acquires retail publishing rights to select shooters from Epic Games; Anthology includes four Unreal games.

Almost two years ago, Midway Games made the surprising announcement that it had signed a deal with Epic Games to publish upcoming installments of the Unreal franchise. The deal was a shocker, as Midway appeared to be diversifying its portfolio to include PC games, as Epic's crème de la crème was the top-selling PC Unreal series.

While that deal was a sign of things to come, today's announcement from "the company that Joust built" deals with things of the past. Midway and Epic have reached an agreement that grants the publisher the retail rights to past Unreal games. The careful wording by Midway indicates "select games" from the Unreal universe will now be boxed with the Midway logo, but at least four have been confirmed to be included in the deal, thanks to a new Unreal compilation that was announced.

Midway will release the Unreal Anthology this fall for the PC, which includes Unreal (with the Return to Na Pali expansion pack), Unreal II: The Awakening, Unreal Tournament (Game of the Year Edition), and Unreal Tournament 2004 (Editors Choice Edition). The pack will sell for $29.95.

Midway's next big Unreal game is the highly anticipated Unreal Tournament 2007, which is expected to be released on the PC and the PlayStation 3.

This is especially good news for newcomers to Unreal because the whole series is currently out of print thanks to Atari (Infogrames) giving the publishing duties to Midway. Unreal 1 should be fun to play through once for those who haven't already. Unreal II was kind of "meh" I'm sure it's being included for "Completist" newcomers, or completists who missed it @ $40 the first time.
UT GOTY is a classic must play game. It's a landmark multiplayer deathmatch title that is as classic as SFII. UT2k4 is also an awesome game, and while many to this day debate whether tht DM aspect is as good as the original UT or not (Some like UT better, others like myself like UT2k4 just a little more) it gives you EVERYTHING UT2k3 did but with better balancing (Which is why it isn't present in this comp, that would be redundant) plus you get the Onslaught mode (Like a Sci Fi Battlefield mode), and the Assault mode from the first UT. All of the games have their merits, and there are thousands who still play both UT's online in droves.
This should tide all unreal fans young, and old over until 2k7, and maybe even afterwards.

That's a great compilation to be sure, but I hate spending $30 when I already own several of the games in the pack.

Awesome package.... but, man, is it hard to go home again.

The original Unreal was incredible. For it's time. I tried to play through it again about a year ago, and just couldn't get past how ugly it was in retrospect. Looks a bit like an N64 game, even with all the graphics maxed out. Still if you can get past that, it does have some awesome fudge-your-shorts kind of moments in it.

Unreal 2.... Hmmm...Let's never speak of that one again, shall we?

UT: Game of the year.... NOW THAT brings back some memories. Too bad that they can't also sell you the five discs or so of phenomenal user-made maps/mods/skins that were out there. The community is what made that game great. Too bad we've all moved on (or the vast majority, at least).

So what you're left with is UT '04. Which is still a PRETTY GOOD game, even though it is a few years old, for $30.... And it does still have a community supporting it (tho not like it used to)!

You could do a lot worse with thirty bucks.....

Well, it's missing the sub-par Unreal Tournament 2003, which is ok. But Unreal II wasn't all that great either. Thirty dollars for four games, Plus the expansion for the first one, is a great price though.

Unreal and Unreal Tournament are some of the great franchises out there. This compilation will attract new players to the series, which is always good.
