Disney's games segment sales dive 17 percent

Interactive Studios sees revenue fall to $129 million, operating loss remain constant, as parent company posts $8 billion in second-quarter earnings.

Disney Interactive Studios has been relatively quiet since the beginning of the year, having released no major games during the January-March period. As such, it comes as no real surprise that The Walt Disney Company segment's earnings for the period saw a significant dip compared to the same period last year, when it released the tepidly received dinosaur-hunting action adventure Turok on multiple platforms.

Reporting on its second-quarter earnings this week, The Walt Disney Company said that its games division saw revenues decline 17 percent to $129 million. Disney attributed the decline in revenues to decreased sales for its self-published games, which faced a tough comparison against Turok, released in February 2008.

Operating loss held comparatively steady at $61 million, the company said, given that the double-digit dip in revenues was offset by a strengthening in its Japanese mobile-phone service, decreased marketing spending, and lower administrative costs at its Disney Online label.

On the whole, The Walt Disney Company saw revenues slide 7 percent to $8.09 billion during the January-March period. Net profit was also significantly off from the same period a year ago, skidding 46 percent to $613 million, while operating income fell 29 percent to $1.53 billion. Disney's Interactive Media segment was the company's only division to post an operating loss for the period.

If they stuck more to their core characters (ie: Mickey, Donald Duck, Goofy, etc.) I think they'd have a consistent influx of gamer interest.

I'm in my 20's and I'd play the hell out of a well crafted current-gen Mickey Mouse or Donald Duck game. Make it engaging! They could take the Ratchet and Clank games as a template. Or something. Do something, Disney!

Obviously their games would have sold if they weren't shovelware (Excluding KH)

Pure was a Disney game and it is pretty sweet. If they do more of that and less Jonas Bros. and Hannah Montana more people will actually want to play their games.

Bart247: That's probably what Disney gets for releasing games based on the crapfest known as High School Musical, and on crappy artists such as The Jonas Brothers and Hannah Montana.

Yup, Disney needs to create an IP that can only be enjoyed as a video game. Doing so will force Disney to introduce something new and original to gamers of all ages.

A few weeks ago there was an article saying the video games sales all around had droped an adverage of 17%. So did they think disney would be unaffected by that.

Disney makes a game for just about anything they can think of and most of it sucks major balls.....Here's an idea Disney.....
Make a game based on Herbie, make it a Midnight Club / NFS / Forza style racing game and you might just have an original game on your hands....

exactly what Bart247 said, only with me there'd be more swearing and insulting of Hannah Montana, Jonas Brothers, and High school Musical.
also................Disney made Turok? the M rated dinsour killing, blood and gore filled game........wtf?
heres a idea Disney, fire the Jonas Brothers and Hannah Montana, start fresh with cartoons, and stop making crappy, worthless crap.
one last thing.........don't make games based on singers or bands unless they are like Guitar Hero and Rock Band, and if you do, don't base it on talentless losers only brainwashed little girls like.

I don't think that Disney is hurting too bad, I mean practically every movie they make is a blockbuster in terms of sales.

Well that's no surprise when they release a constant stream of mediocre music games for Hannah Montana and Jonas Bros. Here's my advice Disney: Tell Square-Enix to hurry the hell up with KH is you want some easy money.
