What we heard: At this point, Eidos Montreal's second in-development project can scarcely be considered a mystery. Not long after announcing Deus Ex 3 in 2007, the game maker said its next upcoming project would begin with the letter "T," narrowing the prospects down to a new installment in the Tomb Raider or Thief franchises. Then last month, a franchise fan noticed that the typeface in a teaser banner was nearly identical to that used in previous installments in the Looking Glass Studios franchise.

Now, the most definitive indicator yet has arisen, courtesy of an advertisement found in the most recent issue of Edge magazine. According to the ad (a photo of which was posted to GameSpot's forums by user angelkimne), Eidos Montreal plans to unveil its second project next Monday, on May 11. The ad then lists three awards attached to the project: GameSpy's Hall of Fame, as well as GameSpot's Greatest Games of All Time and 10 Best Heroes in Gaming.

One look at GameSpot's 10 Best Heroes feature, and it doesn't take Sherlock Holmes-caliber reasoning to figure out just what Eidos is up to. Notably, the only Eidos-owned hero to appear on GameSpot's list is none other than Garrett, better known as the stealthy antihero of the Thief franchise.

The official story: Eidos representatives had not responded to requests for comment as of press time.

Bogus or not bogus?: Not bogus.

thief 3 was good the only one i played, sorta elemental dark and horror mix blend in quite ok. thought thief was only a guy running somewhere in the night but turn out theres monsters and zombies as well ooh. I think ill keep a look out for this game when more publications are out.

    @zajorax,

Well thats your opinion, whereas i thought AC was technically a brilliant game, although it suffered from repetition, what other game can you think of that offers you complete freedom of movement in addition to being able to climb anything, not to mention an original storyline, the only downside for me personally was, as i have previously stated, the repetition.

I also dont think it fair to compare AC to Thief as they are completely different types of games. Dont get me wrong, i loved Thief 1 as it was a totally original idea and defined a genre as it was the first time Lighting dynamics had been used to full gaming effect, i just loved causing mayhem, then hiding in the shadows which made for a tense experience.

I only hope Thief 4 is a return to form as 2 & 3 were quite lacklustre. Suppose we'll just have to wait and see.

Assassins creed was not good! Jumping around in white in the middle the day killing people and then hiding in haystacks over and over again is not a sneaky game. If you like it you fail it!

I'm looking forward to this. I hope they still made it steampunk-medieval fantasy.

They better return the rope arrow and the scouting orb. Those where my favorites.

I believe EA has the rights to SystemShock IP. A while back some fans were going to remake SS2 with the DOOM3 engine(would have been awesome), and EA shot em down

    to parrot_of_adun:
Bioshock was made by real life LookingGlass folks, and was a great game, BUT it was just about a carbon copy of SystemShock2.
But I am assuming you know this?

I would love a new Thief game, but they way these companies would rather cash in, makes me happy with T: DP and T2:TMA Long live the Bonehoard!!

Who needs a good stealth game? Raise your hand. This one's a buy from me if they keep some of those items like water arrows and the club for knockouts. Thief's been known for great atmosphere and emergent, sneaky gameplay. Will the sequel live up?

If only Eidos had been the publisher for the SS series... THEN we might actually see a sequel instead of all these rehashings (eg, bioshock and dead space).

Whether or not Eidos does justice to the respective IPs, at least Thief and Deus Ex get a second chance. SS1+2 are just ignored entirely by this newer generation of gamers (you know, the ones that fell for payed DLC, and STILL buy it).
