For anyone who is having trouble starting this game on vista or windows 7, this solution worked for me after 9 hours of trying. Fully install a fresh copy of this game, patch the game either u.s or worldwide depending what you have to 1.0004 !! Then ... Right click on the XR_3DA.exe, (for noobs this is the file that is found in the bin folder which runs the game, and then run as an administrator. Then ... this game (for me at least) FINALLY worked. and my god its AMAZING! LOVE IT And i have an intel celeron 2.0ghz and 3gb of ram, with ati x1650 ... this game runs crisp and smooth! good luck.

Yeah guys i upgraded to vista a while ago and Stalker showed poor performance on my machine. WHATEVER you do DONT download the DiRT demo on vista its what made it screw up so i had to downgrade to XP Pro (hehe lucky me)

Yeah, I am in the same boat as Javier for the most part. I have had crashes, but with the such terrible performance its just not even playable!

Fortunately I havent had any "real" crashes. But the problem I have consists in the game running smoothly then suddnely gos like 7 FPS, I go to options and without modifying anything click the "Use" button, when Im back in the game everything runs smoothly again for between 2-5 minutes, then the framedrop shows again. Im running Vista in a Core2duo 6420, 2GB RAM, Radeon 1950xt

This v1.0001 patch stinks, i bought a new system, a 2.4Ghz pro, 8800GTX and 2G running Vista 32bit Home. Stalker was one of the main games of 2007 i wanted to play and i cant > cause i cant save without it crashing ggrrrr!!! Also i Hate VISTA!!!!

When I first started playing this game it crashed every time I tried to save. Then I discovered F6 (quicksave) and that seemed to be more stable so I was able to get past the newb area. Once I got to the second town the game became really stable for a few days but as soon as I zone north of the second city it starts crashing every 5-10 seconds and crashes everytime I try and save (even quicksave).

Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this? I run Vista with a 2.6 dual core, an 8800gts, and 4 gigs of ram.

This reminds me of Half Life 2. God that game had some serious problems when it first came out. I'm going to wait 3 months or 3 patches before considering this game... whichever comes last. :-) As a programmer myself, what I find really telling is the version of this patch. v1.0001. I mean, .0001? The game doesn't run on Vista, crashes all over the place on XP, and the best they can muster is a measily 1/100th of a minor point update? Wow. It's almost like they're denying anything really had to be changed in the code.

I had no problems with this game!
So I dunno if I should risk downloading the patch, as from what a lot of people have been saying; the game seems to be pretty unstable.

Hope you guys all get it working ...it's a great game!

Ah, im running windows xp myself. I think i may have found a solution...atleast it worked for me. Simply put it to windowed mode. i have it to where its basicly full screen except for the task bar on the bottom showing up, not bad really cause now i know what time it is. Ive had maybe...one random freeze now, im not sure why this would actually help anything but it has seemed to help me. But i still stand by my origanal thought as this game seems to be released with no testing at all.

I still dont understand. Ive got atleast minimal requirements to run this, ran HL2 with only minimal problems. After proper install, got stuck in initial loading, just the mouse with rotating biohazard icon. After patch, restart system, still exact same thing, still havent seen a single frame of this game. Never had anything like this happen, and from what Ive read STALKER does require decent hardware to run but its graphics are not top of the line, so Im fairly certain its not my hardware, Im at a loss.

Luckily this game does not crash for me, except for the fact that the background and everything else blurs in with the sky and it makes it nearly impossible to play. Does anyone know how to fix this damn sky-blur problem?

I run this game at 1920x1080 resolution with all settings turned up as high as they'll go (no exceptions) on XP Pro x64. Never had it crash, never had it lag, I should check my framerates but it's nice and smooth so I would guess somewhere above 40fps consistently. Would there be any point at all to installing this patch for someone whose game apparently runs flawlessly? I don't mind losing my save, but from the sounds of it not enough has changed to justify the install.
