Red Orchestra playing Steam's tune March 14

Tripwire's WWII shooter will be available via Valve's Steam download service next week for $24.99.

Following the success of the Source engine-based remake of Day of Defeat, Valve Software has announced that it will digitally distribute another World War II-set first-person shooter. The lucky FPS this time around is Red Orchestra: Ostfront 41-45, which will be available next Tuesday, March 14, for $24.95 on Valve's Steam download service. Developed by Tripwire Interactive, Red Orchestra began as an extensive mod for Unreal Tournament 2004. However, since winning the $1 million purse in the Nvidia-sponsored Make Something Unreal game-design tourney, the project has evolved into its own stand-alone shooter.

Finally, a game that will fill the "WW2 themed shooter" gap. Now if only some company would develop an "urban crime" game.

I suggest everyone should check out this game once it comes out. If you feel like your missing something from COD, DOD:S, BF42, etc, etc. Check out this game. I heard on the RO forums that they will be putting out a demo in the near future. CHECK THIS GAME OUT!

They didn't win $1 million. That was the TOTAL prize money for the entire competition, which got split every which way at each stage. I believe the Tripwire guys said they actually had about $100,000 total after all rounds of the competition had ended. And, of course, they got a licence to use the Unreal engine.

As for the game, I need to try a demo of the full retail version first. I now make most of my purchasing decisions based on demos, because I don't buy into hype and conjecture any more. I'll read feedback from people who do get it to see what they say as well - but the demo is key for me.

The UT2K4 mod is awesome. =) But has died a slow death for the past many months... On March 14, I doubt it will have any full servers left at all. Fortunately the retail game fixes those few issues we had with the original! =D NO MORE SHOOTING AT GREY SILOUHETTES OUTSIDE OF THE DRAW DISTANCE!!! ^_^

Its still available as a mod for UT2k4 for free (if you own the game), but the retail version will be more supported, more mainstream (means it has more players), will probiibly have less bugs, might have some sweet new features (hey, $1 million goes a long way in a mod project that evolved into a full game), probibly might have a single player mode, and the list goes on. Its only $30 too, so if you've never expereinced it for UT2k4 (and even if you have), it could be a very good realistic shooter.

donkeljohn, it's not a hl2 mod. It's its own seperate game. Originally it was a mod for ut2k4 but now it's becoming retail by going on steam.

Yay? Still seems weird that Valve is publishing a game that was originally a UT mod.
