Red Faction: Guerrilla Reviews

StraiN-ShifTeD

The destructable objects are really awesome but the out-dated graphics and the repetitive areas are definitely not!

The Bottom Line:
"Disappointing"
As a huge fan of the very first Red Faction game I couldn't wait for Red Faction: Guerilla to be released. The very first Red Faction game was so revolutionary because of the destructive environments and insane weapons. The fact you could destroy levels in the Multiplayer was something never seen before. For Red Faction: Guerilla I've been following news and updates since the day it's announced, yet I finally had a chance to play it.

I borrowed the game from a friend, the installation went real smooth for me. When I ran the game for the first time I immediately set every graphical setting to it's maximum. (I'm on 9800GT in SLI)

When I started the game the graphics looked good at max, but the game was completely unplayable. I didn't check what my Frames Per Second were but I guess it was below 10. By slightly lowering the graphics the game remained unplayable. After playing a bit with the graphical settings I made the game playable at Low/Medium settings. Which made the game pretty much have ugly/out-dated graphics. Somehow the game ran extremely heavy, even on my 9800GT in SLI with the latest videocard drivers and Phys-X enabled...

After getting the game playable I already noticed that the environment looked really boring and repetitive. Probably because the game takes place on Mars (Deserts/Mountains/Sand). No matter where you go, it all looks the same and the same and the same. Troughout the whole game you won't see any refreshing new areas or environments at all. Humppff.. that's what I thought at least.

As for your character, you're not really given any information about yourself. You don't really know who you are, where you're from or even what you are. The real Red Faction fans do know, but the newbies won't have a clue. So I really missed the basic character information, there's barely no game that doesn't have one.

Now the fun part: Destruction. It's simply amazing to see how you can take down complete buildings/towers/walls with a few satchel charges, a bazooka or even a sledgehammer. You can also drive through a building with an armored vehicle or buggy/jeep. The way the objects you blow up come down looks really good and realistic. You can keep destroying objects over and over, it will never come down as it did during your previous attempt.

The big problem of this game is that the game is completely based on destruction. Whether you even use a jeep/buggy to smash into a building, satchel charges or your sledgehammer.. you have to take down so many buildings and objects that it's getting repetitive, predictable and even boring. Taking down something can be fun, but it's common routine in this game.

Overall Red Faction: Guerilla is a nice game to play for maybe the first few hours. If you're a die-hard fan you definitely should get it. But I was definitely not surprised nor amazed by this game, I was honestly disappointed. It had so much potential but in my eyes didn't show it. My recommendation is to wait for the demo and give it a try, if you're still enjoying after finishing the demo: buy the full game! ;)

I'm sorry for the short review but I don't have much time to write on. If I'm able to edit it I will do so in the near future.
