Raven Software is working on the next Quake game, which will use id's Doom III technology.

After turning to Grey Matter to create a follow-up to Wolfenstein 3D, id Software has taken the next step in partnering with other studios to develop new installments of classic id franchises: Quake IV was announced this afternoon at QuakeCon, and Raven Software is developing the game. A long-time partner of id, Raven was one of the first licensees of the Doom engine, which was used to develop the fantasy-themed shooters, Heretic and Hexen; Raven later licensed the Quake engine for use with Heretic and Hexen sequels.

Quake IV will use the still-unfinished Doom engine. The design process is still very preliminary so no in-game demo or actual screenshots were shown. However, Raven did release one concept sketch of a Strogg gladiator from Quake IV. The game will mark the return of the cybernetic Strogg race found in Quake II.

During the presentation, Brian Raffel, co-founder of Raven, noted that Quake IV will be the first offshoot of the new Doom III technology. However, this doesn't mean Quake IV will ship before id's own game--a representative of id Software commented that it's unclear which game will be completed first. Raven's own development cycle will depend on how id continues to develop the Doom III game engine.
