CES 07: Emmys doubly Doomed

John Carmack and id Software are honored for "cutting-edge contributions to rendering technology" and "technological leadership."

Last night at the Consumer Electronic Show in Las Vegas, Sony was feted by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, the body which hands out Emmys. Specifically, the organization honored the PlayStation 3's Sixaxis controller, which senses motion along (wait for it) six axes, with a Technology Emmy Award.

Turns out, the academy had two more winged statuettes to dole out--and both went to honor the twisted minds behind the Doom and Quake series. One was given to the games' developer, id Software, for "the company's technological leadership in rendering breakthroughs with the Quake technology." The original Quake hit PCs in 1996. The newest installment in the series, Quake 4, was released for the PC and Xbox 360 in 2005.

The other id-related Emmy went to John Carmack, id Software's cofounder and technical director. According to id, the award was to honor Carmack's "cutting-edge contributions to rendering technology as the lead programmer on Doom." The first Doom was released in 1993. The latest entry in the franchise, Doom 3, was released for the PC in 2004 and was ported to the Xbox in 2005.

ID started FPS multiplayer and the Quake series were the first FPS you could play over the internet (it was reliable and had enough people playing it to be fun), and without ID the FPS genre wouldn't be what it is today. Proof? Carmack's engines have powered and inspired countless other FPS games, to dispute that is ignorant.

ID and Carmack deserve their awards, they never claimed to have started FPS, but they did make it availalble and viable to the masses (especially with the wad creation capabiities). Besides, like it or not, Doom and Quake inspired a whole generation of gamers to crave the FPS experience.

I can't imagine a games industry without the incredibly talented John Carmack and ID Software.

    They both throughly deserve it!

Unfortunately I don't think Doom should have all the credit as it didn't start the FPS genre, it simply made it more popular. There were three FPS games before it and one was Wolfenstein 3D.

What's with those guys? They give awards 14 years later?

For Carmack, this guy is quite a computing genius and deserves everything he has, it's also very funny to see his hands constantly in a "ready to type millions of code lines" position. Respect

John Carmack didn't invent the FPS genre. "It Came from the Desert" was out years earlier (than Doom or Wolfenstein 3D). But it isn't the first time derivative garbage was rewarded by the academy.

Carmack is the man. And amazingly, programming is allegedly not his only area of technical expertise. He could probably have a doctorate in physics or something if he wanted it.

I hope he keeps up his research / development into rendering techniques. CliffyB needs the competition to help keep him sharp.

PS -- I wish somebody would do a good software renderer again...

Sony shouldn't have gotten that award. It's a pretty bad controller. The only good thing about is that it's so light, you can get into a games and it would pop right out of your hand, wait,is that a good thing?Lol.Check out how bad its motion sensing capabilities are playing Call of Duty 3 on it.

Anyone seen Carmack in video interviews, or heard his voice? It's funny, he has some peculiar sound he makes on some words especially at the end of sentences. Something like "So this feature will certainly push the limit with todays gaaaAAAaamesmmmmhmmmm".

People who don't think Doom and Quake were important titles need a history lesson. John Carmach and id deserve their awards. (not to say other people don't deserve awards as well) And the Dual Shock controller is significant. (Hell, Sony hasn't been able to come up with a better model in three generations)
