Playlogic enlists Rebellion for National Guard game

Dutch publisher and British developer band together for game on American armed forces.

As the National Guard's credo has expanded far beyond the old "One weekend a month, two weeks a year" slogan, so too has its viability as the subject for a game. The National Guard itself obviously thinks so, as it took a page from the US Army's playbook and commissioned Virginia-based Rival Interactive to develop a pair of PC games for the Guard two years ago. The first game, Prism: Guard Shield, was to be used as a military recruiting tool, much like America's Army, while the second game, Prism: Threat Level Red, was to be a commercially available counterpart to Guard Shield.

Little had been heard about the games of late, but today news has arrived that development on Threat Level Red has been entrusted to British developer Rebellion, with Amsterdam-based publisher Playlogic set to handle distribution of the game. The operation isn't entirely un-American, however; a Rival spokesperson confirmed for GameSpot that it is assisting Rebellion with the game design while it concentrates its own efforts on finishing Guard Shield.

Combining stealth and action elements, Threat Level Red will be a first-person shooter that pits players against terrorists set on attacking locations within US borders. It should be somewhat familiar territory for Rebellion, as the company has previously developed the military shooters Delta Force: Black Hawk Down and Sniper Elite for the PC, PlayStation 2, and Xbox. The company has also worked on more fanciful fare, such as Snood 2: On Vacation for the Nintendo DS, and the upcoming sci-fi shooter Rogue Trooper on PC, PS2, and Xbox, based on the 2000 AD comic series.

Threat Level Red is scheduled for release in the third quarter of 2006.

    This game actually sounds pretty cool. I'd actully like to join the National Guard, but I can't because I have flat feet! So, at least I can do it in a game. Although the game probably has a ton of propaganda, that shouldn't really take away from the experience of being a National Guard trooper taking out evil terrorist bad dudes. I just hope that they don't just have "Muslim extreamist" type terrorists. There are other kinds of terrorists after all. In fact, most Muslims I know wouldn't even dream of blowing buildings up and killing people. The "extreamists" are just a vocal minority with bombs, guns, etc. Not very nice people, at all. The game will hopefully have bad dudes who are actully characters and not just generic bad dudes. Like Rainbow Six and all the other games like this do. I gets kind of boring killing the same bad dude fifty times in just one mission. At least they have a pretty good devloper making the game. I hope they do a good job.

    Modern Tactical Shooter? Hmmmm... There is NOTHING better in the world then tactical Espionage Action - yep, MGS!!!

    You've to love propoganda in the form of a video game! I wouldn't doubt if an enlistment application were included with every copy of this game. Anyone who has played America's Army can tell you that the pro-military and patriotic fervor built into the game is disgusting. I doubt that this game will be any different. You can be certain that it will glorify serving in the national guard and defending America against those 'evil people who hate freedom and democracy.' Other subliminal messages encoded in the game may include "vote Republican", "you can only take this gun from my cold dead hands", etc.

    Hoooorahhh?

    Rebellion own the rights to make games based on the 2000AD comics, but so far most of their games have either been terrible or incredibly generic. I get the feeling they'd rather be making movies instead.

    Sniper Elite is actually a pretty good game that has got pretty good reviews. Yes BHD sucked for Xbox but was good on PC. I just hope its a good game.

    Delta Force: Black Hawk Down and Sniper Elite were both fairly good titles. I'm not sure what you're getting at LordOfMidnight...

    Might be nice, if they can do it well. I hate games when they get all cracked up, but they always manage to do something blatantly stupid that screws up the otherwise decent game...

    I'm in the guard and I can't wait. This game will be about going to Iraq and then dealing with 100 hurricanes a year.
