Legend: Hand of God First Impressions

We sat down with publisher Anaconda at the Leipzig Games Convention for a demo of the combat-focused role-playing game, Legend: Hand of God.

Anaconda isn't the most well-known publisher, in or out of Europe, but it brought an interesting lineup of games to the 2006 Games Convention in Leipzig. Among those games is an action role-playing game in the vein of Diablo called Legend: Hand of God. We got a first look at the game behind closed doors, and although it was an early build of the game, it looked like it could be a game to watch for fans of hacking and slashing.

The game follows a basic revenge plot, which means that you're given moral carte blanche to kill anything and everything in your path as you avenge your fallen comrades. You play as a warrior who is a member of a group of fighters known as the Order of the Flame. As a young recruit, you have to go through an initiation, which takes you to the top of a distant peak. While you're away, some evil force slaughters all of the members of the Order of the Flame, leaving your character feeling more than a bit miffed when he gets back to town and discovers what's happened. The story sounds very straightforward, but you can expect Legend to have a heavy emphasis on story and character development.

The gameplay in Legend: Hand of God is focused on your single hero character. You can develop your character as a warrior, a magic user, or a hybrid of the two, but no matter how you choose to play, the game boils down to destroying one monster after the other and collecting gold and items. Like Diablo, Legend is a point-and-click game in which you move by clicking your way around the map, and attack by clicking on enemies.

Based on the demo we saw, Legend is keeping the gameplay extremely simple, with a focus on the satisfaction of hacking enemies to bits in dramatic fashion. This is achieved through the unique animations that add a special flair to the way your hero fights. The animations change to fit the situation--so, for example, if you're fighting a massive troll, your hero will have to jump in the air to land a hit rather than simply slicing away at the troll's feet. The effect is entirely superficial, though, so you don't have to worry about diminished power or accuracy when performing these leaping attacks. You also don't have any control over the type of attack you perform; it's all context-sensitive and at times seemingly random. In addition to the normal attacks, you can also perform finishing moves. Again, these finishers are random, but in this case we saw the hero fighting a large troll. After whittling away the troll's hit points for a while, the camera zoomed in as the hero leapt onto the troll's back and stabbed it in the neck to finish it off. Although these moves are entirely superficial, they do tend to make the combat a little more engaging and satisfying than it otherwise would be.

Aside from the combat, one unique characteristic of Legend is the cursor. Instead of the usual arrow, the cursor in Legend is a living entity that can help you out. The cursor is a luminescent fairy that provides light in dungeons, and can also help you out by providing hints. It doesn't seem like the kind of gameplay mechanic that could drastically change the game, but it's an interesting idea nevertheless.

The graphics in Legend: Hand of God look good, and although we never saw any intense mob combat, the portion of the game that we did see ran smoothly. The only environments shown in the demo were a typical outdoor path through a lightly treed plains area and craggy rock formations, as well as a dark underground cave. The character models look good and move well, and many of the animations are quite satisfying to watch. While in the cave, we watched as the hero knocked down a zombie and chopped its head off, so if nothing else, at least you can rest assured that Legend meets its quota for zombie decapitation.

Legend: Hand of God is scheduled to be released in Spring of 2007 in Europe, with no word yet of a US release. In the meantime, keep an eye out for new screenshots and details about this game and all the others at the 2006 Leipzig Games Convention.

Gamer -1024 has got it right - this is a game with a fair few flaws, and is an ordinary game. Gamespot made too big a fuss about the combat - while it is satisfying - the fact that you don't do anything different yourself, apart from repeatedly clicking means that it doesnt stand out at all. The skills aren't good either - very average and uninventive skills. Better to wait till Diablo 3.

I'd rather play Two Worlds. Its not the best RPG out there, but much better than this wannabe RPG.

I've been trying the demo and I'd say it could be good except for a few things.

    1. After I exited the cave and saved the boy inside the game came to a screeching laggy existance, it was so awful I thought maybe my antivirus scanner had kicked in and started scanning my hard drives but it wasn't, it was the game. Perhaps a patch can fix this, though I don't know the developers or how interested they are in fixing the game since it's distributed on so many digital distribution channels it seems (at least 2 or 3).

    2. The voice of the fairy (your mouse cursor) is absolutely attrocious. If I pretended to be a woman with my voice I could sound better, it almost sounds like a man trying to sound like a woman, it's awful, but it can be overlooked since it doesn't happen too much.

    3. They didn't learn by their predecessors like Titans Quest and Diablo II, loot still gets dropped that the character can't use. For example I've gone in as a mage now, and Im getting stuff like shields, and plate armor and all sorts of things for a warrior or assassin.

The game feels like a combination between fable, and Betheseda's The Art of Magic (1999?, well maybe not that old, but really old), which isn't all bad, but controls are lacking, things drop but you dont' see what they are, so you're left hitting your A key to just pick up everything.

    4. The character apparently only has one finger that can wear a ring and if you wear gloves, you have no finger to wear a ring at all.

    5. The paperdoll is in 3D sort of, you can see things like oversized amulets when you equip one around your neck, though you wont see what ring you are wearing if any, unless you mouse over your hand in which case a pop up appears and you can see what you are wearing.

    6. The mouse is so sluggish, it's almost unbearable, you see a shiny dot of light on the ground representing hidden loot, and click on it and nothing happens, you have to click again, just moving it around the screen feels as if you are trying to run it through a barrell of mollasses.

Dang I forgot to take screenshots, I'll do that a little later and report back more, I hope by reloading the game the lag stops. If it continues theres no way I can play this.

So far, if it were down to about $19.99 to $29.99 I'd probably buy it (if I had the money) just as a nice diversion until Diablo III comes out when ever that is, probably pretty soon now that Blizzard has announced it and shown so many videos of it. But at $39.99, I think that's way too steep, I'd rather play Two Worlds again and save the $40.00 Maybe the demo will get better and make it worth it.

This sounds like a generic game that promises almost nothing new as far as gameplay goes.

I just bought "Legend: Hand of God" I read about it here and think it looks like a pretty cool game. The first thing is that as I'm running Windows Vista Home Edition With a P5k Motherboard DDR 3 RAM @ 1066 Geforce Gtx and a 660 watt power supply. The C.P.U. is an Intel dual core running at 2.33 gb. 8 megabyte cache and the soundcard is a Soundblaster Xi Extreme Gamer. The first problem Is your review does'nt mention the game is in German and non english.. I have asked in the P.C. Games Rquirements forum about this and another problem I encountered. The problem problem is that the game installed correctly but I keep getting an error message of: _GrannyBeginFilecompression@16 under the heading box: "No function". Its a strange error message to me and will wait for an answer. In the meantime, it would be very nice if you would include the fact in your Game Spot Reviews if whether or not the games have language packs in English and the above review doesn't mention this. Looks like I said to be a great game and I would love to Review it for Game Spot. So, hopefuly someone will be getting back to me on the problems mentioned and I look forward to doing this.

Hmm, the writer is from Gears of War? Sounds like we'll have some plot twists maybe to keep this one a good game to look out for.

It's about time that someone figured out that Diablo is still very very fun and even if this game doesn't change the formula at all, it will still be fun and satisfying. Good job Master Creating and ANACONDA.
