Shippin' Out September 24-28: Halo 3, Opposing Fronts

Microsoft unleashes 2007's top 360 title alongside Company of Heroes expansion; sixth Settlers game joins five PS3 games and three Wii VC titles.

Unless you've just come back from a three-year stint researching jungle fauna in the deep Amazon, there's probably a good chance you know Halo 3 is coming out this weekend. Microsoft has dropped over $10 million dollars to promote the Xbox 360 exclusive, which will go on sale at over 10,000 locations at midnight--including hundreds of GameStop and Best Buy outlets. GameSpot's own Halo 3 Launch Center has extensive amounts of information on the title, including an extremely positive review and the video of the campaign's first hour.

If you don't own a 360 or aren't partial to foiling an interstellar crusade by fanatically religious aliens, the week does have some notable alternatives. A trio of high-profile games previously released on other platforms hit the PlayStation 3: Midway's Stranglehold, Electronic Arts' Skate, and Blazing Angels 2: Secret Missions of WWII. Another game originally slated to arrive last week, THQ's racer Juiced 2, arrives on the PlayStation 3 (and the PSP) on Tuesday, alongside Sony's first-party basketballer, NBA 08 (PS3, PSP).

The days ahead also offer something to PC gamers whose thirst for Nazi blood has not yet been slaked. Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts, the first stand-alone sequel to THQ's critically acclaimed real-time strategy game, ships out Monday. Other offerings for the mother of all gaming platforms include The Settlers: Rise of an Empire, the sixth installment in the city-building strategy series; and Loki: Heroes of Mythology, an action role-playing game that mingles deities from four pantheons.

With no new releases scheduled for Xbox Live Arcade, and Thursday's PlayStation Store update still unannounced, the Wii's Virtual Console is the only console service with any confirmed new games for download. Super Nintendo Entertainment System classic Kirby's Avalanche teams up with the Sega Genesis favorite Streets of Rage 3 and TurboGrafx-16 throwback Legend of Hero Tonma on the Wii Shop channel.

Jacob-Goodlich - I have to disagree with you on the Halo thing, Halo multilayer will always be fun, then I will agree Assassins Creed will be thew best game this year, but why would anyone care about stranglehold when Halo 3 is released this week. this was a horrible strategy by the makers of Stranglehold, first the game is horrible you slide over all objects and the graphics look like a launch title for the dreamcast. Then they release it along side Halo 3, the people who made this game are a bunch of geniuses. the only game other than Halo that is worth looking at that released this week is Skate.

Any particular reason they're not listing Soul Nomad for the PS2?

Despite, y'know, being advertised right there on the PS2 page, in a very visible location, the legend "SEPTEMBER 25" plainly visible?

Gotta say, glad to see Halo 3 isn't the only title available this week that has me interested. There's Juiced 2, really enjoyed part 1, and then there's Loki.

Halo is doomed Brats and Dewey are both released in the same week, everyone will forgot about their 360s and play with their Wiis this week.

Yeah I know, but it never gets old for me.
