Codemasters pulls Hei$t

Bank-robbing, getaway-driving action game set in Summer-of-Love-era San Francisco coming to next-gen consoles, PC from developer inXile.

San Francisco in the late 1960s may have been a time for free love, psychedelic rock and roll, and sticking it to The Man, but for Codemasters, it was apparently a perfect time for a crime spree.

The UK-based publisher today announced that it will release Hei$t, an action game following bank robbers in The City by the Bay in 1969. The game is currently in development by inXile Entertainment, the Brian Fargo-led studio that created 2004's The Bard's Tale, and is expected to be available for "next-generation consoles and the PC" this fall.

Details on the game are slippery, but Codemasters promises that gamers will pull off bank robberies, knock over restaurants and strip clubs, and speed away in getaway cars with the fuzz in hot pursuit. With each successful job, gamers will get more equipment to break into better scores.

"We designed Hei$t so that players feel like a part of the best robberies and car chases from classic movies," inXile creative director Maxx Kaufman said in a statement. "Everything from the different types of jobs to pull and the reckless pursuits by the police through the streets of San Francisco, to the sarcastic banter back and forth between the members of the crew gives Hei$t the action and style of the great attitude and rock-driven films of the '60s."

Hei$t has not yet been rated.

It's probably going to either get pushed or canceled in my opinion since I haven't heard from it for a LONG time.

Sounds like a good mix of some shooting, some driving and a type of planning...notice I didn't say real-time strategy, now if this becomes a part of gameplay then it's going to suck but as long as it sticks to planning, shooting and driving I think this is going to be a sleeper hit. Go HEI$T!

If it's free roam I'll buy it. If not I'll rent it.

The premise sounds good, but it may be hard to pull off. Hopefully it doesn't suffer the fate of the short-lived TV show with the same name. But it'll probably be good because they used a "$" instead of an "S" which shows just how cool they are.

May I ask why it looks like his revolver is a flamethrower in the screenshot? I know it's supposed to be a muzzle flash but it just looks stupid.

Why are people saying this is a GTA clone? The game isn't even free-roaming is it? If it isn't, that's reason number one it isn't a GTA clone. And second, if it is, I think robbing banks isn't a whole lot like GTA except for the fact that it's free-roaming, so that's reason number two.

Why the hell are people calling this a clone of GTA? This is so not... I mean, CMON! This is all about the heists and getaways... Not about the rise of a criminal empire or such... GTA introduced a new concept of free-movement gameplay, and just because another will utilize the concept, does not make it a GTA clone... I will give people that Mafia, True Crime, The Getaway, and Saint's Row did capitalize as GTA clones because they focused on using the same basic features of GTA... However, Hei$t looks different since it has a different angle with the free-movement gameplay... A more heist & robbery aimed angle with getaways as a crucial part... While on the subject, I hope to god that this game includes the car chase from Bullitt, quite possibly one of the best car chases, next to the French Connection...

you know if they could d the whole bank robbing thing rite the game could be fun. robbing is one thing GT never really did. shore in SA you can break into house. and yeah there as that time in Vice city where you knocked off that bank all heat style but really. they never focused on things like crowd control and getting out in set time frame. well on paper i sounds cool.

Lets just hope they make an attempt to have a unique and detailed storyline, with fluid gameplay. I hope they just don't throw it together and hope to bankroll of the type of game it is and make an easy profit because of games like GTA. How much effort goes in and reviews will be a big factor for me before I take the chance. Maybe good rental material.

Yawn...... how original in concept. Do we really need any more GTA ripoffs to enrich our dull existence?
