60 Minutes scores Fatal1ty

Pro gamer and World Cyber Games champ will be profiled on this Sunday's show.

Last time 60 Minutes tackled the subject of gaming, it was with a story linking the murder of three police officers with Grand Theft Auto: Vice City that featured antigaming crusader Jack Thompson. This coming Sunday, the venerable CBS news magazine will run a much less controversial piece on professional gaming. Its subject will be professional gaming in general, and PC shooter champion Jonathan "Fatal1ty" Wendel in particular. It will also feature footage of the most recent World Cyber Games championship in Singapore, which 55,000 people attended. 60 Minutes airs at 7 p.m. EST/PST and 6 p.m. CST.

Sure im not a great fan of fatal1ty,not even a small one for that part, but i don't dislike or hate him either,in my personall opinion he is one of the best when it comes down to PC first person shooters like unreal tournament, yes he does earn lots of money, and im glad for him that he does,if i were in his shoes i wouldn't mind playing games for a living, and what is this about fps games being "dead brain games",they are in 50% of the cases also tactical games, then why do people complain about him using the name fatal1ty? it's a name nothing else, if he likes it, so be it, personally i like it a little to,if i could i might watch 60 minutes, but i don't think i can see it.

He plays computer games for a living, why wouldn't the people who post on gamespot hate him?

Fatal1ty has been using his name since 1999, so don't be hating on his name because it is unoriginal or "so 1997." He has beaten some of the best players in the world so to call him anything other than a professional gamer is just stupid. And just because he's good at PC shooters doesn't mean thats going to translate over to Halo 2. He's the best player in the world when it comes to PC shooters, nothing else. Also, I think picking Fatal1ity over some other random gamer to give his views on violent gaming on 60 minutes is a good thing, otherwise you'd get some idiot talking about how professional gamers dont: have a life • converse with a member of the opposite sex • disappoint his parents • hold down a job that isn't embarrassing to give as an answer to "So what do you do?"

I'll definatly watch "60 Minutes" this Sunday. At least they're getting positive news about video games this time instead of negative news.

of course we hate on Fatal1ty, cuz we'd love to do what he does for a living. and we'd relish the chance to turn around and sh** on haters like us but unfortunately we'd be too busy travelin' the world, playin' games for six figures and managing groupies

I played against him on Halo 2 once and he wasn't dominating the match like I expected. Needless to say, I wasn't really imprerssed. Heck with a little more practice I would've beat him. It just goes to show you how overrated some of these guys are. I'm sure if i wanted to kiss my social life good bye and put in the long hours of never ending practice, I could compete in these competitions and win.

Just because he's better then the rest of us at shooters, we have to hate him? Wow, the gaming community is a bunch of jealous idiots. Seriously, if he makes money playing games, kudos to him.

"Fatal1ty" (that name is soooo 1997) may be a professional PC shooter champion, but there are at least a few things he probably hasn't accomplished, such as:

    • having a life
    • conversing with a member of the opposite sex
    • not disappointing his parents
    • holding down a job that isn't embarrassing to give as an answer to "So what do you do?"

Seriously though, so CBS wants to find out what your average gamer thinks about Jack Thompson, the GTA nonsense and violence in video games in general...and they pick a guy who calls himself a "professional gamer" and goes by the name of "Fatal1ty". Great. This guy is just barely a notch above the people who participate in Rock/Paper/Scissors competitions on the Respect-o-meter.

solsub how is it a brain dead genre a decent fps player at least uses some tactics to win. i think racing games are twice as brain dead. in fact anything other than an rts or maybe just maybe a fighter requires less thinking than a shooter.

I really don't know much about him, other than what he's won in the past. The overall opinion I seem to be reading from you guys is that he's a jerk, why is that?

So what if he's good at shooters. There are plenty of other genres that you people have forgotten about such as different types of platformers, adventure games, sports titles etc... My point is this: There can be no definitive "best gamer" on earth unless that person has mastered every one of the genres that the industry has to offer. Hence, there are way to many genres to consider when christening the "best gamer". In other words, he MAY BE among the best when it comes to PC FPS', but he may be terrible at strategy games for example, immediately rendering his title useless. Granted, he has received a lot of recognition, but it was solely for playing FPS' (most brain-dead genre). It could've just as easily happened to some other guy who excelled at Gran Turismo or something.

You know, in a world where every mainstream news article is always school shooting releated or some state legislation bill restricting the sale of video games, you guys should appreciate the fact that this is one of the rare opportunities to dispell video gaming stereotypes and show gaming in a positive light.

Yeah, there have been news articles on the positive affects of gaming, but they usually don't end up on the front page of the newspaper.

Whether you like Fatal1ty or not, any positive press on video gaming is better than none.

And what the hell's your problem with people who get paid to play games? Is that any different than whining about people who get paid to play tennis? Football? Golf? You know, lot's of people play golf on their spare time, but you hardly hear anyone **** and complain about how much Tiger Woods gets paid.

Hopefully he wont say anything stupid. I hope he is prepared to defend gaming and make all the people who hate gaming look like idiots.
