Frontlines: Fuel of War Updated Multiplayer Hands-On

We head back to the battlefield and try out some new maps and vehicles in THQ's upcoming first-person shooter Frontlines: Fuel of War.

We've looked at Frontlines: Fuel of War on several occasions in the months leading up to launch, and at every turn we've been greeted with a game brimming with features and a dev team eager to show them off. Yesterday was no exception, and we were given the chance to really put the game through the stress-test wringer by pitting ourselves against 15 other game journalists for an eight-a-side Xbox 360 multiplayer session across a range of maps, including a few new ones.

Gnaw was our first multiplayer map and was perfectly suited for the number of players on hand. The level was wide and dilapidated enough that regardless of your preferred class type--be it a sniper lurking somewhere high atop a building and lying in wait, or an in-your-face heavy machine gunner--you weren't constantly bumping into allies or members of the opposite team. That said, a few of the back-alley paths do have choke points, which makes them great for ambushes or crafty explosives experts. A particular feature of this map is its flying debris, which litters the sky and keeps you constantly on edge in the knowledge that somewhere above there could be a hovering drone ready to blow you to smithereens.

Street was our second arena, and much like Gnaw was set in a drab and broken-down urban environment. Like all the multiplayer maps, Street features various capture objectives that will require you and members of your team to either occupy a zone or interact with an object at a designated location. Successfully taking a point will move your frontline forward, with the goal of occupying the most territory. Although you can play Frontlines as a free-for-all first-person shooter, doing this doesn't help your team all that much. Controlling the most ground and having a rolling frontline is the name of the game here, and an added incentive is that each objective gained acts as a potential spawn point that lets you get back to the action faster after you're killed. Slightly larger than Gnaw, Street also has a range of vehicles, including light armored hummers, as well as medium and heavy tanks. Roles (think Call of Duty 4 perks) come into play here, given that a carefully placed tactical missile is capable of destroying a tank and its occupants.

Mountain Top was the other new playable map at the event, and its open-plan battlefield and spaced-out objectives were quite different than both Street and Gnaw. In the middle of the map was a huge warehouse with a capture point smack in the center. This was a particularly hard one to both take and hold because of its multiple points of access. Even a dedicated attack and guard team would come under fire from various angles, and as a result the spot became the focus of raging battles. Drones and C4 specialists did well here, with players setting up traps and suicide runs with their robotic toys. Outdoor objectives became targets for players with itchy air-strike trigger fingers, and the action saw them launching cluster bombs and attack choppers. A handful of vehicles were available to take for a spin, but most opted to go it on foot because the steep hillside made for rough driving, and being sedentary in any spot for even a brief amount of time was guaranteed death.

Village and Solar Farm--maps we played in our last multiplayer hands-on--made another appearance, and offer very different experiences. Village is a midsize and frantic map with long, open corridors and semidestroyed houses to occupy. Although close-combat encounters are far from infrequent, snipers and resourceful engineers tended to dominate, either by taking out their prey at long range or by deploying sentry guns to guard key objectives. By contrast, Solar Farm is huge and would best suit the game's PC-only 64-player team deathmatch mode. A vast array of light vehicles, medium and heavy tanks, and mobile antiaircraft trucks will have your ground troops covered. The rear of the map also includes multiple helipads stocked with AH67 Mohawk and K-55 Hyper choppers, as well as an airstrip that plays temporary home to two of one type of fighter jet per team. Our demo had jets disabled, but our last multiplayer session included them, and though we were told they were still in the tweaking phase, we found them considerably more difficult to fly than the helicopters.

Multiplayer will play a huge part in the success of Frontlines: Fuel of War, and with launch day rapidly approaching in the latter part of February, we're hoping all the bugs are ironed out in time. We can see this one pulling military and team-based shooter fans alike. Check GameSpot soon for our full review of the game.

This game is great fun, you can make bodies fly Running people over is hilarious, its not perfect but it offers something different and theres a lot of tactics involved. The only thing that ruins this game is lag. Find a decent connection on a 32- 50 man server and its the most fun you'll have in a long time. You can get real inventive with your attack, the maps are huge and offer many choices.

Actually I found this to be a solid FPS. With the drones added and the destructible envirement it really is a cool game. As far as graphics, I grew up with pong so I don't know what people expect. Its graphics are great the explosions awesome and while the framerate might not be 60 fps with alot of action, this game is at least a rental to see if you like it. I purchased it and its great.

I have just got this game today and guess what fella`s, IT`S AWESOME !!!! I played 2 full missions in Single player on Hardcore then went onto a partly full 32 player room. The maps are absolutely huge and the gameplay is really good too. The effects look superb, a few minor framerate issues but apart from that its Wicked. 9/10 from me .

I played the demo. the controls were sort of robotic as we are all used to cod4's realistic movements. Everything's controls just feel flat. The weapons always fire in a straight line, directly where the crosshair is; you don't have to zoom in at all, and i couldn't figure out how to use the subtype's abilities like drones, mini tank things in the openings, air support, etc. Even in the controls section it doesn't say how to use these things. Killing people wasn't as fun cause it just lacked finesse. This game could be great, I won't decide on a final opinion until its debut.

OH, and all of you that are hating on this game, you will change your mind once ALL of your XBOX Live budds diss ya and are playing this game all the time. I was tempted to buy this game. I like Battle Field 2 a lot, well, I did. But I was wondering, have any of you had the chance to actually play? If so, could you tell me a bit about it? For instance, I hated the fact that when you shot someone in BF2, there was no blood to be seen! Or do I remember a very small amount...like a pink little circle would appear for a split second. However, it looked lame anyways...
So yeah, little details like that. Thanks in advance!

Oh dear no Ps3 version This games going to amazing online,i've been dying to play BF2 on consoles. Don't listen to all the negative comments about this game, its just SOUR GRAPES from PS3 owners who now need to justify why this games been canned on their system, any game getting canned is bad news, over 60 vehicals, 50 man servers, squad systems, huge maps, and massive explosions what more could a man ask for.

Can't compare this to CoD4 cause it does not have Vehicles and does not have 64 players. I hope this is as good as BF2/2142, Seems similar but it does not have drones. I just hope when it goes live it has few bugs and problems.

Downloaded the single player game a few months ago (less said about that the better) my mate on live told me to download the MP demo it as it was nothing like the single player. Wow the first time i played this i was blown away theres so much goin on at one time its amazing, especially with the dedicated Kaos servers, 32 players and its lag free. The graphics aren't the best and theres a few bugs that really need to be addressed, but none of this matters when you play it for a while. Sound in this game is of some of the best ive ever herd in any game, they must of sampled a real war or something! All this on top off numerous weapons, vehicles, solder classes and for the first time that i have seen recon drones! Havn't played Battlefield on PC but this kicks the **** out off the Xbox version. I hope BF:BC is even better than this, then it will be something special.

I totally disagree with anyone who says the graphics are terrible. The weapon and character models are pretty good, the environments consist of many different textures. The explosions look nice and send chunks of debris into the air. When you get real close to any texture it doesn't look that great, but that can be excused, since there are hundreds of different textures in any given map. This title is definitely a next gen. game, and even if it isn't the best looking game ever, it's quite a lot of fun.

    Hey Cookie2-0, battlefield has jets...

Anyway, this game looks OK, not sure if it will beat Battlefield or Call of Duty, but it might be good.

I downloaded the MP demo as soon as it hit the Live marketplace, and ill tell you, I havn't been let down this much by a game in a long time. Graphics, gameplay, and setup was all bottom of the scale. Basically, a sucky rip off of Battlefield. Do yourself a favor and buy a different game when this comes out.

by the way BF:BC is coming for both the 360 and ps3, don't say just ps3 cause you don't know what your talking about.

And i'll buy this game as a stimulant until BF:BC comes out.
