E3 '07: Turning Point: Fall of Liberty Impressions

Spark Unlimited shows off a previously unseen level from its upcoming first-person shooter.

Earlier today, during a meeting with Codemasters and Spark Unlimited, we were treated to a presentation of a previously unseen level from Turning Point: Fall of Liberty. Previously the only level we'd seen was the first, in which you get to see New York City coming under attack from Nazi forces through the eyes of the construction worker that you'll play in the game. Today we were shown the last of the New York City levels, in which you'll simply be trying to escape from the Nazi-controlled city--assisting civilians en route if you wish--via a train through the Lincoln Tunnel to Washington.

The level took place at night, with huge Nazi blimps armed with searchlights and guns floating overhead. In case you haven't been keeping up with our previous coverage of the game, Turning Point is set in an alternate universe in which the Nazis were never stopped in Europe and so, in the '50s, they invade the US using improved versions of weapons that only existed as drawings and/or prototypes when the real Second World War ended. The blimps are just one example of this technology, and although we didn't get to see many others in action, we're told that they'll include a 4 million-pound supertank armed with battleship cannons, a jet bomber that was conceived specifically for the bombing of the east coast of the US, and infrared-style "Vampire" night-vision goggles that the Nazis couldn't use in the '40s because they needed huge batteries and had a very limited range.

Another feature of the alternate universe in which Turning Point takes place is that while the Nazis have made great strides in weapon technology, the US has done nothing of the sort. You'll be able to equip weapons that fallen enemies leave behind, of course, but when the ammo or those is in short supply you'll find that America's arsenal consists of "Big Henry" rifles, those Thompson machine guns that you see in old gangster movies, and not a whole lot else.

As a burly construction worker you'll have the ability to take out enemies with your bare hands when necessary, and on more than one occasion during today's presentation we were treated to third-person displays of grappling. We also got to see an enemy being used as a human shield during a shootout aboard a disused subway car, though since we've yet to get our hands on the game we have no idea how easy that move (or any other) is to pull off.

Turning Point: Fall of Liberty is still in the relatively early stages of development, but it's already showing plenty of promise. If the storyline can live up to its premise, it should prove an interesting competitor for the plethora of World War II shooters that will inevitably be arriving on store shelves alongside it in 2008. We look forward to bringing you more information as soon as it becomes available.

the demo looks like something on the Wii, and that isnt an overstatement. The controls really werent thar good either, though i did like grabbing and throwing people. But shooting didnt work to well, and they seemed to be trying to copy off of Freedom Fighters or sumthin (might i add that the game barely looks better than Freedom Fighters). It isnt up to snuff yet, maybe they need more time, but graphics and sound need some major work, and was I the only one pissed when enemies jumped out right behind you in the demo, not to mention them coming from in front. There is a difference between difficulty and "puppy biscuts" stupidity. WTF this game still needs work, and the demo is more of a turn-off than it should be. I hope this doesnt turn out like Hour of Victory, but while it does play a "small bit" better, it certainly looks worse, which is one of the few things Hour of Victory had going for it.

For one, the graphics really arn't that bad. They may not be up to snuff with games like Bioshock or COD4, but sometimes its not the graphics that matter so much as how much you actually enjoy the game. Anyone turned off by some off the comments below me, do not let them stop you from downloading the demo. I loved the transition from first to third person and the abbility to grapple your enemys and use them as human shields, or throw them off a high rise building. Have you ever seen anothe FIRST PERSON game where you can do that? I love the setting, and some of the indoor environments are actually veary will detailed as well as having good graphics on things like the marble. One other thing to consider is the fact that there is still a month to work on the game and things could be improved by then. People still like COD2, F.E.A.R, Dead Rising! Alll the games mentioned there have "Old Xbox 360" graphics and people including me still enjoy the heck out of them. "Gamecube Graphics"? that is a massive overstatement.

Anywhey, I am definatly going to get this game. The single player even appeals more to me than COD4, see, its all what you like....

In the demo, the graphics looked worse than some gamecube games.

Actually that supertank is the Landkreuzer P. 1500 "Monster" and it's supposed to have as a main cannon a Schwerer Gustav (Dora) 800 mm caliber which could fire a 7 ton projectile that could pierce 7 meters of reinforced concrete or 1 m of steel plating at 37 km.

This game has potential. If it doesn't get too futuristic and the storyline doesn't get too far from the realm of reality, it could turn out well.

This game is pointless, I hope they are not running out of ideas already.

He is right there are a lot of FPS games coming out in 2008 but some of them aren't coming out until later in the year. Turning Point will be out by that time.

hmmm I think this might be worth a shot but its going to have to prove something as there are alot of other first person shooters comming out in 2008

Yeah, they better work on the graphics, cuz right now it looks like a really old 360 game, very unimpressive. Cool concept, though.

It will probably have better graphics when the game actually comes out.

I think it could be a pretty cool idea... but from the stage demo it looks not very well done. I'm just hoping it's because it's very early in the making

Can't you guys tell that this game is gonna be bad? Just from looking at all the gameplay footage, graphics, and the fact that its another WWII shooter, I can guarantee that this game is not gonna get above a 7.5 (at best 8.0) on gamespot.. (assuming gamespot doesn't line its pockets from ads..)

no more sterotypical WWII shooters, now we're moving towards a genre of sterotypical what-if WWII shooters.... come on think of something original that doesn't involve nazis or 4-million pound supertanks

From the graphics perspective it does not look like anything special

As from gameplay we will see
