TGS '07: Devil May Cry 4 Hands-On

Capcom runs PS3 and 360 versions of Devil May Cry 4 side by side in Tokyo, and debuts two new trailers.

News broke in May this year that Devil May Cry 4 was going multiplatform, to both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, and the reaction from fanboys was obvious: PlayStation fans derided the move, while Xbox stalwarts cheered to the heavens. Since then, GameSpot has played demo levels from both console versions, and found the differences to be, well, difficult to spot. Content-wise, Capcom reps tell us both versions will have exactly the same gameplay, and have confirmed today at TGS that both the 360 and PS3 versions will run at a solid 60fps at 720p resolution.

At Capcom's booth at TGS today, both versions were playable practically side-by-side on more than two dozen screens, although the levels being shown were the same ones that have been displayed since last year. Once again, it was near impossible to discern between the two graphics-wise, although the PS3 did seem to have a sharper draw distance than the 360, particularly in the demo level's wharf environment. And in terms of gameplay control, both versions are once again quite similar.

However, Capcom did showcase some new trailers for Devil May Cry 4. The first was a frenetic mix of action sequences from the game, and featured some cool moves from this game's main protagonist, Nero. There was also quite a lot of returning hero Dante, and we were teased with more glimpses of the fight between Nero and Dante seen in previous trailers. Dante also looks like he'll get to take on what we're assuming will be one of Devil May Cry 4's newest bosses: a large, dragon-like creature that can fly, and that even transforms at one point into a gigantic Little Shop of Horrors-style plant monster. Other highlights include what look like new moves for the Devil May Cry series, including one in which Dante spins upside down in midair while pumping an opponent below with bullets. There were also some impressive new air throws. The second, longer trailer was more story-focused, although the trailer shed its story secrets only after we clarified some confusing things with a Capcom rep. The source of animosity between Nero and Dante apparently concerns Dante's move to kill a friend of Nero's--a friend that happens to be demon, although Nero is unaware of that. However, there were plenty of other things that caught our eye, such as one particularly cool shot of Dante "wearing" a new weapon, the Gilgamesh. It consisted of two steel gloves, steel boots, and a faceplate that covers the bottom of Dante's face Hannibal Lecter-style; we're not quite sure what the Gilgamesh does, but it looks undeniably cool.

Devil May Cry 4 will be released simultaneously in early 2008 for the PS3 and Xbox 360, with the PC version arriving shortly afterward. Check back with GameSpot for more updates.

Why are you annoyed its on the 360? It doesn't hurt anybody. It's just fanboys gripping that they don't have any great exclusives on the PS3 anymore.

Both Halo2 & 3 were merely shadows of the original, that's why alot've the series fans were dissapointed, bungie scewed up as far as the campaign is concearned, and although i acknowledge how good the multiplayer is when it's not stricken with lag & the whiney american kids are asleep i still feel it hasnt evolved much from the original, that i recal having more fun moments over xboxconnect than either've the sequels.

ON TOPIC: AWESOME!! give realease date & TRAILERS!!

"the only people who hate halo are the ones who suck at it, or refuse to play it"

Yeah, you're right. I guess it couldn't be that maybe some people just don't like the game.

how come people are comparing DVM to HALO 3?

before i thought there was only the console war
and the format war (kinda pathetic war there)

but theres now a war between Dante and Masterchief?

    >_> i find this very saddd

and just cuz halo 3 came out this year nobody wants
to compete with it? Metroid prime 3 came out this year
and it may not have the graphics like halo 3 but its a great experience in its own ways (it didnt sell as much
as halo3 but that doesnt mean its not a bad game)

but Halo 3 is also a great experience in its own ways

    OK ON TOPIC

no matter wut system this game goes on
Devil May Cry will be a great game

it seem the producers that created DMC1, will be working on this one. I hope this is true, becuase in my opioion DMC1 was thee BEST. the rocket launcher cancel to the stylish looking devil form and memorible boss fights. DMC1 only need more combos and perhaps throws and it would had been a perfect 10.0 in my book. DMC2 was stupid as hell. DMC3 was HARD AS F==K. the second version of DMC3 was okay, but still didnt have the same feel as DMC1, so i'm hopping they get it right with DMC4....

Halo and DVM are two different styles of gameplay, how can you compare the two. People constantly want to make comparisons with games that have nothing to compare with. Halo 3 yes was a great game. But in terms of game play mechanics nothing much has changed. You jump over stuff, no cover system, nothing different. Graphically its a great upgrade. But I honestly don't think its a game that kills all games. Its much the same as Halo2, I don't know but it didn't have that WOW factor to me as did the first Halo. But it is a great game don't get me wrong, but are we at next gen? Seems to me that developers are trying to take short cuts when developing games. It seems that the new gen has lost some of what the old gen had, creativity. We have more multiplat games hitting the market, instead developers working on the strengths of one system there are trying to meet in the middle so they can release to both systems. Some game developers I feel haved sold their souls in a sense. All I have to say is game developers, Keep it real!

Wow. On 1up.com's article, they said that Kobayashi stated that he ez'ed the game up. Stupid. I loved the difficulty of DMC3. Now they have to trash it for casuals, then multiplat it for potential sales. I hate you, capcom.
