More free Day of Defeat begins

Valve again tempts gamers with three more days of no-cost World War II battles.

Upon its release, Day of Defeat: Source was met with positive reviews, although its one sticking point was the limited number of maps available in the game. Developer Valve Software has recently looked to fix that, churning out a couple of new maps--and now it wants to get the word out. Today Valve announced another weekend during which gamers can download Day of Defeat: Source--normally a $20 title--and play for free. The promotional period is already under way, and the free "weekend" will actually spill over into the work week, ending at 1 p.m. PDT on Monday, July 10. Today's announcement follows Valve's first foray into free Day of Defeat in February, when it hosted a similar weekend event. Recently, Valve added a new gameplay mode called Detonation and two new maps, Jagd and Colmar.

I loved this game, bought it after the first free weekend ages ago. Recoil does take some getting used to but after that its a tossup whether to go CS or DoD when i want fast online shooting.

    A good game imo.

    This game is good.
It's very original with the spawning system and it s one of the fastest games ever. If you die you only have to wait max. 10 secs.
Recoil is another thing, but you get used to it and it makes your playstyle more realistic. I didnt see any real soldier shooting whilst standing with a BAR.
Only there are not that many maps, but I bought it

DOD has always been my favorite half life 2 mod...I bought it bundled with CounterStrike and Half Life 2, but really...paying 20 bucks for this game alone is a bit much. It's great, but it used to be a free mod, and it's not like there's a lot of variety in the gameplay. Same thing for Half Life Episode 1 - I want to play it, but 20 dollars isn't the right cost for what you're getting.

This is a pretty good game, it got some great actions. Yes, sniper and machine gunner rule the game but that is what smoke grenade and frag are for. Move in with smoke screen and flank those pesky campers, like in real battles. I use SMG and I scored most kills when I played yesterday.

"LOL this game is Crap, I had a better chance of buying it before I played the trial. Stick with Counter Strike. You fire 3 shots in this game and your gun points to all the way to the sky, give me a break."

Typical Halo fan lol. "What do you mean I can't fire a high powered rifle on full auto with no recoil??? Man this blows I wanna sword fly." haha

I played for a couple of hours, and to be honest can't see myself forking out $US20 for this. Half that price then maybe.....

I played the free weekend, but given my very short life expectancy compared to COD SP, I won't be getting into online gaming. I actually ended up ranked 2nd in one round of games even though I got killed 3 times more that killing enemies, because I helped capture the objective flags.
Still, you can't hear people walking around so its easy to get shot by an ememy you can't see - and snipers are just so annoying. Recieving 1 shot kills all the time does not make for a fun game.

Meh i guess a lot of people dont like the gameplay mechanics since it doens't involve solo play as much as teamwork.

Thats the one thing i hated about CS the game just doesn't really reward good teamwork as much as that one person able to consistatnly get headshots.

DoD rewards good teamwork making it a better game IMHO. Kills are nice but ultimatly it's far more rewarding to have a good feeling of teamwork rewarded. I like how DoD does that.

I used to play the crap outta DoD when it was a free mod. Now that it runs on Source (and I don't have a powerful enough PC to run it) I have to get my WWII fix through Call of Duty 2. Man, I hope they port Day of Defeat to 360....
