Conflict: Denied Ops First Look

Eidos shows off an early work-in-progress version of its upcoming Pivotal-developed shooter.

During a recent meeting with Eidos we were afforded our first look at Conflict: Denied Ops, a first-person shooter currently in development at Pivotal Games. We weren't permitted to play the game on this occasion, but we were invited to watch an Eidos representative play through the first level, titled Santa Cecilia Monastery.

Conflict Denied: Ops takes place in and around Venezuela, where, in the game's version of events, the government has been overthrown by a corrupt regime and a civil war is raging. Team America offers to intervene, the regime objects and threatens nuclear-flavored reprisals, and so the US intervention is carried out in secret by two members of the CIA's "special activities" division. That's where you come in. You'll be playing as two undercover soldiers--a sniper and a machine gun specialist--whom you can switch between at any time during solo play, or whom are tailor made for cooperative play with a friend.

During our explosive tour of the war-torn monastery, it became clear that one of the most important strategies in Conflict: Denied Ops will be to have one character providing cover fire and attracting enemies' attention while the other flanks them. The game has purportedly been designed with accessibility in mind, and will feature a control scheme that should be easy for newcomers to the first-person shooter genre to pick up. Switching between characters will be as easy as pushing a button, and using the two left shoulder buttons you'll be able to issue simple orders to your colleague. The left trigger will tell him to follow you or move to where you're looking depending on whether you hold it or tap it, and the left bumper will be used to target enemies or areas that you want your teammate to concentrate his fire on. Furthermore, if you send your colleague toward any object that he can interact with, he will do so automatically, whether it be opening a door or hacking into an enemy communication system.

Given that weapons are kind of a big deal in first-person shooters, you might be concerned to hear that there are no alternate weapons for your specialized characters to pick up as you play the game. Fear not, though, because at the end of each mission you'll be awarded upgrades and/or new weapons for your arsenal. After beating the first level, for example, your machine gun guy will get a grenade launcher, and your sniper will gain a gun camera that makes it easier to shoot from behind cover as well as a shotgun to deal with enemies who get a little too close for comfort. Both characters can also perform melee attacks, incidentally.

You'll have the ability to commandeer vehicles in Conflict: Denied Ops as well, although the only one that we got to see during our demo was a small tank. The vehicle's 73mm cannon proved more than up to the job of showing off how destructible the game's environments are, and also made short work of enemy tanks and helicopters toward the end of our session. We're told that all of the vehicles in Conflict: Denied Ops will be designed with cooperative play in mind, so, for example, when using the tank while playing with a friend, one of you will be responsible for driving while the other mans the turret.

In addition to the story-driven mode, Conflict: Denied Ops will feature competitive multiplayer content of some description, but Eidos isn't revealing any details on it at this time. We look forward to bringing you more information as soon as it becomes available.

Right guys ill be honest with ya`s, I were proper disgusted with the demo, very very dissappointed, I have also played the other conflicts and the last one Global Storm I really did play it to death online as there was only 4 player Co-Op with most of the usual characters too, It was awesome and if any of you played it you will know coz all loved it but that were on PS2. I was dead eager when I heard of this new one so checked the demo and hated it but I just couldnt help myself but going to buy it today (release day ) and guess what yeah the first mission is a little tacky but that Demo is not even a 3rd of the full mission so it does get a bit better, then as you start getting further into the game the get much much longer and harder and it really is quite addictive and graphics wise its good but If I remember rightly the conflicts have always been awesome gameplay which to be honest I would prefer as long as they had half decent graphics. Like for exaple I started the first mission and towards the end I were thinking Im taking this back tomorrow and getting something different. Now ive got about half way im loving it and really finding that it is highly addictive, Cant wait to do C0-op online but I do admit they really should have kept the same charachters and also 4 player. I just hope now they bring out Global Storm as a Original Download coz I will buy that straight away and they really dont intrest me but that was wicked. Definitly worth having because of the Co-Op and it really is good further through the game, could of been a lot better but still good. They could of made this game massive if they got it spot on. Also very very little options in game too, there is none really just the basic controller layout and stuff, But ladies and Gentlemen the is a downloadable package option so they obviosly have a lot of that in mind, Ill keep peeps updated and answer any questions regarding this game, feel free. P.S Plz dont judge this game off the Demo coz I admit they just dont know how to sell very well thats all.

Ummmm ... this game DOES NOT FEATURE 4-PLAYER CO-OP?!?!?!

how the hell can the first FOUR conflict games on the PREVIOUS generation of consoles feature 4 player co-op and the next-gen DOES NOT...?!? This Game is terrible. My xbox has 4 F-ing controllers

How does this console continue to provide games with less gameplay, shorter single-player, less features and less functionality?

I'd rather have nintendo 64 graphics and bring those things back

you guys cant compare all those games to this because for one,, all of them games listed below (excluding halo) dont have co-op campaign and cool tanks and other stuff that are part of multi player, Halo is the only game that utilizes it well, and even though unreal 3 has veichles, you cant use the cool ones in multi player online. Now i know that there are enough fps out there, but there isnt exactly enough quality ones out there,, destructible enviroments is another things all of the games down below lack,, i think its pretty cool that you can blow a little hole so you can see where the enemies are and snipe them. I dont know how fluid the game play is though,, ill just have to wait for more previews, but im definatley hyped about this game,, this will satisfy me enough till mercenaries 2 comes out,, me and my friends will have fun with this forsure.

i'm a long time fan of the conflict series, so i am so happy. what i wish though is that it were a 3rd person shooter so it might stand a chance. i do agree a little with id_xbox_360 , coz with all these great fps's the conflict might won't diliver much.... but maybe if it were a 3rdps i will

Its hard to get excited about another FPS. At least bioshock tried to take the genre somewhere new. I think it's gonna be a long time before i'll buy another FPS. Sigh.

I don't like the idea of them making it a FPS game. The Conflict series have always been great as third-person shooters and I'd like them to at least include the option of playing it in third person view.

FPS is getting quite popular for the ps3. I agree though, we should see some other genres.

I hadn't heard of this game till I read this, but I think I'll be plenty full of FPS with CoD4, Haze, Resistance, Rainbow 6...

Games developers have always complained about having the hardware & technology available which would enable them to get the most out of their software, well..that time has arrived!! so what do they do? simply make yet more sub-standard sh$te! The problem isnt the Power of your console or the Technology available, its the grey matter between the ears some develpment companies! "NinjaMunkey01" Apparently Ubisoft are in the progress of making another R6 game that should be available late next year : )

Shifty7 is right. While I want games like Haze and drakes fortune I would like some more tactical shooters. this dosent look that tactical though. I want another Rainbow six game to come out!
