Capcom cracks XBLA size limit

Microsoft eases 150MB limit to let publisher achieve "complete feature and graphical parity" for PSN, XBLA versions of SSFII Turbo HD Remix and Bionic Commando Rearmed.

After granting an exception to Konami's Castlevania: Symphony of the Night to exceed the skimpy 50MB XBLA file-size limit in January 2007, Microsoft officially ditched the stifling restriction in favor of a slightly more spacious 150MB limit. However, many developers have still found the expanded limit constrictive, especially considering games found on Sony's PlayStation Network aren't subject to the same restriction, and Microsoft has doled out several more exemptions on a case-by-case basis.

It now appears Capcom may have found one good way to get Microsoft to ease up on its file-size limit: go multiplatform. With Capcom's Digital Day under way, producer Rey Jimenez gave Street Fighter fans an update on Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix on the publisher's official blog. After laying out much of the information found in GameSpot's recent preview of the game, Jimenez addressed concerns that the Xbox 360 version of the game will be hampered by Microsoft's file-size limit.

"The last thing I'll mention is concerning the talks that have been occurring online concerning the file size of the game with respect to features on the 360 and the PS3 versions," said Jimenez. "I can officially say that the file size will not be an issue. With great help from the guys at Microsoft, we will be able to offer the same features on both platforms to the same quality as each other. To use the term I've been reading on the forums, neither console version will be 'gimped' due to any kind of limitation."

Speaking with GameSpot, a Capcom representative confirmed that Microsoft has indeed slackened the limit for SSFIITHDR, and also noted that Bionic Commando Rearmed will also not be subjected to the 150MB XBLA file-size limit.

"Given the sizeable content in Bionic Commando Rearmed and Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix, Microsoft allowed Capcom to work with a larger file size limit for both of those titles in order to provide gamers with the game experience that Capcom desired, such as full hi-res textures (on Bionic Commando Rearmed) or 1080p support (for SSFIIT)," said the Capcom rep. "The Xbox Live Arcade versions of both titles will have complete feature and graphical parity with the iterations that will be available on other platforms. There were never any issues with 1942 or Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3, as those titles were designed from the ground up to meet [Microsoft's] standards."

Despite the concession made for Capcom's two upcoming downloadable games, Microsoft plans to stick by its 150MB size limit for the time being. "On the whole, our partners are happy with the size limit framework currently in place, and we do not anticipate the need to change the 150 MB size limit policy," a Microsoft representative told GameSpot. "We will continue to work closely with our partners to bring the best games to Xbox Live Arcade, and if a game warrants a file size limit exception, we will provide one on a case by case basis."

    I hereby and officially vote for a GRIN Nintendo strategic alliance. Bionic Commando Rearmed is 2D/3D platforming at its best. -Absolutely gorgeous and smooth.

    They should at least put a 500MB Limit instead,Come on most people own a Hard Drive on their 360's.

    I'd like to know if Capcom is bringing more cool stuff to the Wii. Especially seeing as how it's a very popular console. I know that they can't put but so much on the 512MB internal flash mem. But the 2GB SD mem cards should allow more than enough space. I'd love to see some old Dreamcast games be released in multi-game discs, like: Capcom Dreamcast Classics Vol. #1, #2, etc.. Like $20 a pop. That'd rock!

    "Some_One_Plays To: ---n00b_kid--- The PlayStation 3 has P2P servers and XBOX 360 has Client servers."

    What the hell?

    "ninjasam This games going to be sweet, but something caught my eye. Same graphics as psn version in 1080p? I thought xbox only supported 1080i"

    I Think it was the fall of 2006 update that unlocked the 1080p function on the 360, which was before the HDMI 360s came out.

    This was going to happen sooner or later. Let them increase space size, I say. It allows for better and more refined classics as well as new IP's.

    Sorry but I am not trying to start anything here but if you are going to call someone an "Idiot" make sure that you use the right form of a word. It is Buy not by and also personally I feel that everyone who is going to BUY a system is doing it out of loyalty to a company and its product and if you are to hate so much on people for doing that you should hate on yourself as well. I think that this expansion will do some good maybe some more advanced and "newer" more refined classics can be brought to the 360

    SilverJedi you took the words right out of my mouth I don't think that the ps3 is bad at all I think it is an excellent example of what the world is technologically capable of but people who are so overly obnoxious about it give the system and its fan boys a terrible rep.

    Mostly (Not all) idiots by the PlayStation 3 console, maybe it's because of brand loyalty, their PlayStation Portable, the higher price tag, or maybe just because they couldn't pick between the three consoles.

    But don't feed me crap about the PlayStation 3 currently being better than the Xbox 360, I used to be a total Sony fanatic, I owned everything Sony and had to have it the day it came out, but the day the PlayStation 3 came out, I went and bought an Xbox 360. Why? Because I wasn't impressed by the European backwards compatibility, the online services suck and the fact that most games seemed to be a rubbish knock off of existing Xbox 360 games. The graphics are more or less the same on both consoles, with the Xbox 360 having slightly better graphics due to the fact I have benchmarked both using development kits, and the Xbox 360 has a slightly better shader and generally has a higher framerate.

    Yes because the Playstation community is full of fine upstanding citizens like yourself.

    I've got nothing against the Playstation, but really, it's people like you who give the rest of the community a bad name.

    If only all types of 360s had a hard drive...

    @SalarianChemist

    All images are displayed at the native resolution of your TV. So, if you have a 1080p TV then the TV will have to upconvert and 720p or 480p signals even if the hardware does not. Obviously some TVs are better at this than others, but honestly it doesn't matter if the TV does it or the game system. If you can get something that runs native in 1080p it should look somewhat better than an upconverted version though.

    @thee_decider

    By longer load times on DMC 4 for 360 do you mean those 1 to 2 extra SECONDS?

  • thee_Decider

    That 150mb limit is such crap. What percentage of owners don't have a hard drive, and how many of them are actually going to PAY to download a game, given that that they've already shown they will do anything to save a buck? And look how games like DMC4 have longer load times on 360 than PS3 because the developers can't count on the "gamer" to have a hard drive to stream data from. I don't know ANYONE who lugs games around a memory card. C'mon, Microsoft...rrrgh...

    With only 20GB of HDD space on my 360, I have to agree that - for the most part - the 150MB size limit is good. I think it should be more of a general gaol, than a restriction and it seems that MS is making exceptions. This limit is one thing that does hamper the service, but it also helps by keeping the downloads small for fast transfer and less free space required on the HDD. Of course that's all their fault for thinking 20GB was big enough and then overcharging for the 120GB HDD.
