Original Bionic Commando officially Rearmed

Capcom preps remake of NES classic for download on 360, PS3, and PC this summer; next-gen sequel due later this year.

The villain, looking not very much like Hitler.

Last October, Capcom announced that it was bringing the Bionic Commando franchise back for a next-gen sequel. Some traditionalists may have balked at the series' move to 3D, the redesigned main character, or the game's darker tone. Those same doubters may be more interested in another project in the franchise the publisher just announced.

This spring, the original NES Bionic Commando game will be remade as a downloadable title for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. Titled Bionic Commando Rearmed, the game will preserve the basics of the 2D side-scrolling original's gameplay, with revamped graphics, additional weapons, new music, a two-player cooperative mode, and online rankings.

Familiar, yet not.

Capcom also narrowed down the release date of its previously announced Bionic Commando follow-up, saying it would follow the downloadable offering later in 2008. On top of that, gamers who play through Bionic Commando Rearmed will be able to unlock extra content in the new Bionic Commando game when it comes out.

The publisher has tapped Toshiaki Mori to design Bionic Commando Rearmed's art, and Swedish studio GRIN, the same shop behind the next-gen sequel, is handling development of the remake.

    Im more excited for this Remake of the classic Bionic Commando than I am for the fully 3D version and I always wanted a 3D version of this game and I never thought they would do it and now that they are Im more excited for the 2.5D version lolz

    I really enjoyed the original and this remake looks like its adding all the right touches. I'm really looking forward to it. =)

    p.s. I admit that I sooo wanted that bionic arm when I was a kid. lol

    Very nice. Anyone else also thinks that a version of the remake would be perfect on the DS or PSP?

    The only way it could be better is if one of the playable characters were female, like the Game Boy Color version of Bionic Commando (also a great game). Oh well, can't have everything I suppose.

    I saw the preview for this and I gotta say, I'm almost more interested in this than in the 3D game, if for no other reason than the nostalgia factor and the 2-player co-op. And the animation is sick and the graphics are beautiful...I wish more developers would use today's CG rendering power to make 2D games instead of trying to convince the world that 2D is dead.

    The pic of 'the villian' looks more like M.Bison than it does Hitler hmmm actually Streetfighter and BionicCommando are both made by Capcom so there you go, maybe its Bisons brother hehe.
    Actually, it looks more like Guille has stolen Bisons uniform and somehow crammed his massive hairstyle into Bisons cap.

    Cant wait, i loved bionic commando.
    The NES was the best version with the most variety i think, with its 2d side scrolling platform sections, the map you move around on, and the top down sections... memories.

    (EDIT: Damn at least two other people have noticed the M.Bison lookalike before me)

    Bionic Commando was definitely a game before its time. I loved that game back in the day.

    I'm gonna' crap my drawers, this is so exciting, one of the best games ever made makes it's return. With two player co-op and un-lockables for the new 3D version? ARG, I'm gonna....yup...Anyone got some toilet paper?

    This was my most wanted game for XBLA. Whenever I posted in a "What game would you like on Arcade" thread I always said Bionic Commando. I find it strange that it isn't on Virtual Console. Here's hoping Diddy Kong Racing, Conkers Bad Fur Day and Goldeneye now make it to XBLA. That would be sweeeet.

    One of my favorite NES classics. As long as Capcom can do what Retro did for the Metroid franchise, I think we'll have a pretty sweet game to look forward to.

    Nice! Glad that they're doing the NES version and not the inferior arcade version. Wish that they had done this with the Xbox Arcade version of Contra.
