Battlefield 2142 Updated Hands-On

EA had a 32-player Titan game during its summer press event, and of course we jumped in.

EA gave us a chance to play Battlefield 2142 at its summer press event, and needless to say, we jumped at the chance. Battlefield 2142 is the next game in the popular multiplayer action franchise, and this one is set almost 150 years in the future, where two factions war for some of the last land on Earth. Like all Battlefield games, it will mix vehicle and infantry combat on maps that support up to 64 players.

Even though we recently saw the game at developer DICE's Stockholm offices, this gave us a chance to see another new map. In this case, we played on City Power Plant, which is an unusual name, since the other maps that we've seen have been based on actual places, such as Verdun and Gibraltar. This level features a river cutting through the middle of the map, with bridges connecting both sides and various industrial buildings scattered throughout. The wide-open nature of this map makes it perfect for not only vehicle battles with the walkers and tanks, but also for Titan mode, as well, which is the mode that we played. The job of our 16-man team was to destroy the enemy's Titan while defending our own.

The one thing we learned is that it will be hard for an unorganized team to take on an organized team, even if that organized team is composed of EA testers with orders to take it easy on the press. Then again, half of our play session was spent with the various members of the media who were familiarizing themselves with the new weapons and vehicles in the game. All 40 of the game's unlocks were made available for us, so we could experiment with different weapons and equipment. In the regular game, you'll have to earn these unlocks through play, so there's a constant reward structure in place as an incentive to play well.

There are some notable tweaks in the gameplay that are worth mentioning, since many of the conventions found in Battlefield 2 have been changed. Take, for instance, medics. There is no dedicated medic class in Battlefield 2142. Instead, the standard assault class can unlock a medic kit, which can be used to heal you and friendly units. However, you won't be able to scatter multiple kits at the same time. Instead, you're given a single health kit that can be deployed onto the ground. It will not instantly heal a friendly, like Battlefield 2's kits can, but it will slowly heal all friendly units within a small radius. Meanwhile, defibrillators to revive fallen teammates are another unlock.

Even during our brief gameplay session, we got the sense of how essential teamwork is in this game. We were divided into four squads, and the squad leader becomes even more essential than before. For example, not only can squad members spawn in on the squad leader's location, but the squad leader is also the only one that can put various new toys into play, such as a respawn beacon, a sentry gun, and a floating gun droid that gives your squad a bit more firepower.

It's a lot easier to take over the missile silos on the map as a squad. These silos are critical since they're the main way to take down an enemy Titan's shields. Once the shields are down, you must assault the Titan, and again, squad play is the only effective way to go as you battle through the tight confines of the Titan. If you die without having a squad leader or respawn beacon to spawn on, it means you must somehow work your way back up to the Titan again.

Battlefield 2142 feels just as dynamic as its predecessors, but there are enough changes and new features in here to make it feel quite different at times, as well. The game is still in development, and we should see it ship later this year.

The 40 unlocks sounds more like they just locked up all the extra stuff that bf2 had, like the medic kit, ammo kit, granades, shock paddles, knive, etc.
I hope I am wrong though.

The patch is suppossed to be released soon, its patch 1.4, but they are adding at least 1 new map with it, so it may cause more bugs, like when they released patch 1.3 wit hthe vehicle drop option....the patch should be out before 2142, but the demo of 2142 will be out very earl august they said, so I will probably be playing that more then BF2, that is if its good...

It has to be said that if EA launch 2142 before fixing the multitude of problems with BF2 I'll not be buying it. Lets face it EA have totally washed over BF2 and the half arsed patches that fix one thing and create two more have become tedious. Not sure I can handle it again with 2142!

    Roll on Quake Wars....

well they are working on a patch currently, and are u serious, u can go in a ton of buildins, the buildings u go in are the same more or less, and get repetitive, but look at Kubra Dam, u can go in all of the structures on that level, its the same building in each area but u can go in it and shoot out the windows....and in special forces, most of the buildings u r able to go in, just like on devils perch, there are a ton of little shanty houses to go into, and warlord has a whole mansion to run though and fight, in, though unless u have a powerful pc, dont bother, or it lags pretty bad, or u can just upgrade it like I did....either way

Basically if u didnt like BF2 dont bother with 2142, its gonna be close to the same, it Will have bugs, it will take a powerful pc to run the game comfortably, and it will have longer load times if u have a slower pc, its going to be just like BF2, just with new features, new weapons, 40 unlockables, and a new gameplay mode: titan....

You shouldn't give them credit for **** EA's a money-whoring company and I hope they go belly up.

"That is how it was on pc, u can get into most of the buildings in BF2..."

That's not true at all... Do you actually have the PC BF2, or are you just pretending you do?

BF2 was far from perfect; pretty scrappy game that you could get bored of easy imo, and I think this will be the same. All the little unfixed problems and lack of gameplay variety will frustrate you like in BF2

that is how it was on pc, u can get into most of the buildings in BF2, and in special forces, but I think they need some other type of weapon, like a more powerful rocket launcher, and u only get like 1-2 shots, but that 1 shot will take out a tank for sure, because with the regular rockets, u need like 2+ shots, and u have to shoot at the wheels to get them out fast, but its so easy for them to just turn the gun and mow u down....

That is why I like the new patch EA is making, it is going to fix the bugs thy said, but also they are releasing some new map sponsored by comcast, and the patch gives the server the option to turn vehicles off, and just have infatry Vs. infantry....

Oh yea, also I like the custom character feature, I always wanted to be special forces, but with claymores that the snipers get

This game looks pretty cool. I like the more general classes and more customizable characters. Hopefully they'll let you customize them to the point of being able to adapt your character to fit your style of play rather than the other way around (although in order to be a good team member you'll still have to mix it up)

My other main thing is giving infantry the abilities to stop armor. This doesn't mean, however, making the armor weaker. You could keep the armor realistically strong but give the infantry more tools like allowing them to go inside MOST buildings (instead of like one or two) and shoot out the windows at incoming armor. This would make the armor vulnerable inside cramped city streets and still powerful in open fields, just the way it is in real life.

hopefuly EA will release this game for the 360...adn it will be an identical game to teh PC one not some half-asss port like BF2

They have patch 1.4 coming for BF2, willit fix all the probs? Probably not, but u have to give them credit for trying, they are still making patches even though the new game is right aroun the corner

also, on ign.com they said there will be a demo released in the begining of august!

Oh yea, and if they do release it for ps3 or 360, it probably wont be anything like the pc version, just like with BF2, they were 2 completly different games, even some of the classes were changed, it wasn't bad....just different...

Not that interested until Quake Wars was postponed, looks good, been playing BF2 since release so the franchise must have something about it! Save the negativity until it's been released, it could be the best thing since sliced bread!
