Sega fine with flying solo

Company's US chief executive says it has "no interest" in mergers and acquisitions right now.

Electronic Arts might be interested in buying Take-Two--possibly even considering a hostile takeover after the company spurned its advances-- and Activision and Blizzard may now be happily in bed together, but Sega Sammy reckons it's better off alone.

Simon Jeffrey, the CEO of Sega of America, told Reuters in an interview that as far as mergers and acquisitions go, "That's not an area we want to play in right now. We have no interest in being acquired; we are very happy with our position right now."

The executive also admitted that the company was slightly taken aback with the success of its Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games for the Wii and DS. He said, "I don't think we believed in our wildest dreams that it would sell 5 million in just three months." The publisher, which just released The Club for the Xbox 360, also has another Olympics game title in the works, along with a role-playing game and a first-person shooter based on the classic sci-fi film Aliens. Its God of War-like action-adventure, Viking: Battle for Asgard from the Creative Assembly, comes out later this month.

Sega Sammy is currently the sixth-biggest publisher in the US by revenue, according to data from NPD. That's a position that it is happy with, states Jeffrey. He said, "There is plenty of room for smaller companies to be successful and profitable in this business. You don't have to be number one or number two. You can be number six very happily."

Under its current arrangement, Sega can leverage its brandname and unique properties to rake in beaucoups money, doesn't have to worry about overhead costs and diversions associated with running a mammoth corporation, and certainly doesn't need to bother with the 3-Bottles-of-Jack headache that is competing in the console wars.

Why would they have any interest in being bought or buying? Games are a high-risk business now. A climb to the top is expensive and risky, and getting bought wouldn't much appeal to Sega's traditional business ethos.

    Two things here...

Sega merging w/Nintendo is akin to Microsoft merging w/Sony. Now the partnership of the two has been mutually beneficial. I believe that Sega should maintain its autonomy so that all consoles can benefit from its titles. On the new console side, it won't happen. I owned every Sega console except Saturn and I loved it. The entry barrier costs in this or any future console generation is way too high for the likes of any company. Remember, MS sunk $5 into their two consoles before turning any profit. The Dreamcast was a great machine but couldn't stand up to the newcomer w/more R&D financing (Sony PS1). Sega couldn't keep its "technological ear-to-the-ground" to hear the train coming. New console configs requiring multiple cores, ample RAM, HDDs, Network capabilities, & HD-capable media ports rehash the same reasons Sega exited the manufacturing business in the 1st place.

GO SEGA GO GO GO GO!..yay for SONIC!..anyway...but yea man i would imagine that the Wii is helping them tremendously...as for the games that they develop... its practically the perfect console for them...i mean i don't really ever see sega developing a game were Sonic is a commando armed with a machine gun and large hunting knife descending into the forests of NK to kill an evil war lord...along with multi player death match..its just not gonna happen...

Okay...I think they can get away with this IF they crackdown on Sonic Team. Beat them until they WANT to make a good 3D Sonic game (the 2D ones have been good) I want a Streets of Rage remake or a new one as well...but look what happened to Final Fight...

We are in an age where beat-em ups are as dead as Light Gun games. That does not mean you gotta make a new Streets of Rage into some...whatever Final Fight Streetwise was... you could STILL make it a beat em up. You could put it on the Wii (god please ^_^ just...support the classic controller...no motion stuff...) give it 3D graphics if you feel like it but stick to what made Streets of Rage so darn good. ah, but im off topic..

    Stay indie Sega.

Sega have had a large spate of takeovers in the past few years, like the creative assembly and sports interactive

Wow...6th in revenue. I didn't know they had managed to comeback that far in sales. And their near future lineup seems to be one of the better ones they've had in past years. Way to go SErvice GAmes!! And if they merged with anyone, I think the best fits would be Nintendo, Namco-Bandai, or Microsoft. Hopefully EA doesn't have it's sights on them.

I hope they continue to be a independent force as long as they can. Indies are the driving force of new concepts within the industry, and sadly we seem to be in a climate where we are losing them one by one.

sega are the best when it comes to games ashame people decided on suportting a machine with no good first party games over one that was full of great first party games back in the days of the saturn and dreamcast. every playstation is the same no good first party games every good playstation game is by a third party. which is why people should of brough saturn and definetly should of got dreamcast cause untill i got 360 the dreamcast is definetly the best console i have ever had.

Sega, the masters of performing just well enough to get by. Not that I'm holding that against them, but they just have developed the amazing talent of making just enough decent games to make just enough profit to stay as a big name company.
