25 to Life blinged out, goes gold

Eidos' lawful/lawless shooter hits the streets January 18 on the PC, Xbox, and PS2.

In Eidos' upcoming third-person shooter, 25 to Life, gamers will be able to play both sides of the law. Whether they choose to be cops in blue or street thugs decked out in red, the game is one color today: gold. Eidos today announced that development on the game is complete, and the master copy is off for duplication. The game will be available to the public January 18 on the Xbox, PlayStation 2, and PC.

25 to Life's journey to stores has been anything but a smooth ride. The third-person shooter was originally supposed to be released in early 2005 but experienced several delays, the most recent being the result of new management postponing the game in order to put it under "business review."

The game also became the main target of some playa-hating from politicians for its glorification of violence. Senator Charles E. Schumer (D-New York) said the game makes popular antigame target Grand Theft Auto "look like Romper Room" because gamers slip into the colored bandanas of gang members and engage in gunfights with police.

Soon after, CNN news analyst Nancy Grace joined the debate and invited Miami lawyer and bane of gamers Jack Thompson on her eponymous show to talk about the game's content. Despite insistence by Thompson, who publicly assured anyone who would listen that the game would never see the light of day, efforts to cancel the game failed.

25 to Life is rated M for Mature and will retail for $39.99 on consoles and $29.99 on the PC. For the 411 on the game, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

    Next gen GTA WILL feature a mission with Jack Thompson (or at least a look alike), being shot in the head... :p

    Nancy Grace and Jack Thompson....could there be a more melodramatic couple? As far as the game goes, I'm not really interested (just not my thing) but I can see people buying it just to spite people like those 2. I still have a hard time seeing the difference between a violent R-rated movie and a M-rated violent video game. Both already have age restrictions in place right? Yet when was the last time you heard individuals 'railing' on a particular movie? Seems like if they would just enforce the age rating (when selling a game) there is no big deal. And like violent movies if a parent decides to let their under-age kid participate/play.....it's their (parent's) choice right? I find it a bit hypocritical to try to censure one medium while completely ignoring the other. You can't have it both ways.

    Well, about time. If it's good (a rent is in the process for me), then I'll be picking it up. My concerns are not with the content, as long as the game is good. I know that I am more than mature enough to play any game (I turned 22 yesterday), and these debates do not concern me. As long as they don't pull games that I am anticipating, all is good.

    Anybody notice how it's always liberals who rail against videogames; those who profess to hold rights to speech and privacy dearest to their hearts. Hillary Clinton, Joe Lieberman, Charles Schumer, and their good friends the trial lawyers have continuously tried to manipulate and distort the effects that these games cause on innocent children, who never even knew what a gun was until they put Vice City in their PS2. At the same time these liberals uphold the right to abortion, and attempt to give rights to terrorists in Gitmo. What's morally worse: Abortion or a violent videogame? I hate to get political, but I just never hear Tom Delay, Rick Santorum, or President Bush suggesting that America needs to take a stance against videogames. The good Senator from New York needs to establish his priorities anew.

    Woodchuck - Jack Thompson hasn't had ANY games banned. Actually, he's pretty irrelevant these days. He had his 15 minutes of fame and blew it, now no-one really cares about him.

    Even if this game sucks, EVERYONE BUY IT!!! We'll show Thompson, that son of a..... I hate these people so bad. What happened to the land of the free? Games, no matter what their content, should never be banned. Freedom of speech!!! One of these days, some angry gamer is gonna be waiting for Thompson in a parking lot.

    Or maybe they're trying to sell to people who wouldn't mind an urban shooter in an urban environment. I like the idea, because it's different for the most part. We've never had a Socom like shooter that puts you in street alleys, with the classic "Cops & Robbers" game.

    That doesn't mean squat if they can't pull it off in the gameplay department, though.

    another crappy game that stupid people are going to buy because they are a wanna be gangsta. This game is gonna suck and its racists as hell, deal with it and DONT buy it!

    I think you hit the nail on the head warriortyson. If this game is anything above complete and utter trash I will be extremely surprised. The only reason it got any attention was because you were killing police in it.

    If it's not BC with 360 then it's useless. Socom has PS2 on lock.
