Ganna purchase this. Watched the interview with the lead designer. Really interested me. Seems like a heartfelt game.

"even adults need to see the world through a child's eye's once in a while." well if this game is any evidence, then hallucinogenic drugs should do the trick just fine.

looks alright. the fact that he said there was no real challenges is kind of a put-off. I feel he did a really good job reviewing the game, he went really deep into his synopsis. Haven't heard a review from him, but he did a good job. i might check this out, atleast grab the demo.

Demo's really cool. Definitely on the easier side of puzzle gaming but the world is worth exploring if you have any heart or imagination.

great review. I don't think I'll get it though if the puzzles are too easy.

I think it's a great game, but I also think Carolyn romanticized and over-coated the game with sugar. It's an emotional experience, truth be told, but the review is biased, as one made by a gamer enjoying the genre.

why does she call papo and yo,  "papa we yo" ?

yomonkey
yomonkey like.author.displayName 1 Like

@houshidar its "Papo y Yo". "Y" (pronounced as a long "e") means "and". The title is "Dad and Me". Its not in English.

i think she's using the Spanish pronunciation. Papo y yo which would mean Papo and I in English.

Who is this dude that's reviewing this game? He's romanticizing the whole thing way too much. 6.5 at best. Not here to be emotionally touched by "twisting, winding stairways" and "a docile monster named Monster" in a game where you can't even lose. Sheesh.

I'm guessing Monster is a metaphor for the boy's father. Sometimes docile and lazy, sometimes rage-filled and violent. Alcoholic perhaps?  That's where the heart and feeling would come from in my opinion, i could be wrong of course.

@OHGFawx You are absolutely correct. You can look up the interview with the Lead Designer, if you want.

It is basically his own tale about his alcoholic father, with his good and bad sides.

An interesting thing is that the little robot companion symbolizes how the designer's love for technology helped him survive through his years of hardship.

@pcultimate I had a strong feeling that's what it was even with Carolyn making sure not to point it out in her review. Papo and yo sounds like Papa and I first of all, and the scene where the boy is hiding in the closet as Monster stomps by really brings it home. I salute the Lead Designer for telling his story, i think many would-be fathers would benefit from seeing that situation from the child's point of view. This follows along my argument on the David Cage article of how we need more mature subject matter in video games in addition to the usual classic game types.

I don't think this game deserve a 7.5 because the puzzle platforming just was too easy.

It's really refreshing to read this review after the most recent Troll McShea review and see how a reviewer can let themselves be drawn into a game instead of fighting against it.  Score doesn't matter when you can tell whether the critic actually gave the game a chance or just writes a bunch of nonsensical problems.  If Tom wrote this review it would start off, Papo & Yo, more like Papo & No, the controls are broken...etc.  But, I digress, nice review Carolyn!

Obviously its really cool that a real dark subject matter is at the heart of a video game and the art style is really nice. True, video games as art. But, I would liked if there was some sort of negative mechanic that took place when fire monster attacked you. Why? Honestly, I am not sure. I guess I just need some risk.

@rasputin177   I remember that interview where back where he said the monster was his abusive father and such.  It shocked me, but it was commendable as being strikingly honest for a gaming news interview.

As spanish speaker, this its the wrong way to pronounce this game, here some tips:

&= is pronounced "E"Yo= Just Like "Jo"  ( Like Little womans xD)

Matty_gamer
Matty_gamer

how is this game pronounced?

papa & yo?

papa and yo?

or as carolyn is saying papa ryu?

ivan_osorio
ivan_osorio

@Matty_gamer The thing that I don't get is that most people keep pronouncing "yo" like you would in english. In spanish (at least as far as I know, which, granted, is not a lot) it would sound more like a "Jo". At least in Spain spanish (I think it was), south american variations could be different

mlcarter815
mlcarter815

@Matty_gamer The setting is Latin America. In Spanish, Y is And, and it sounds like 'e'.
