User Rating: 6.6 | Paperboy 2 SNES
Paper Boy 2 is a fun game that takes the classic arcade game to another level, not only in complexity but also in difficulty. In a nutshell, you control the paper boy or girl and deliver newspapers to the route you are on. Gameplay: 7/10 Each route you go on is slightly different from the others, with different obstacles and challenges. Points are awarded for successful tossing of newspapers. Landing a paper in the mailbox gives you extra points, whereas breakinga window will make you lose points. The controls are simple, though awkward at times. Turning and breaking are not as smooth as I would like. The obstacles that you face on your route are quite strange. For example, there will be a house with cannnons firing out of it that you have to avoid. Why there is this house in a residential neighborhood is beyond me. There are tons of obstacles as you go. There are also newspaper packages you can pick up for more papers to deliver. Navigating the streets is a litte confusing as you may not know where to turn at such. Graphics: 5/10 In comparison to the first Paper Boy game, the graphics are much improved. Not only are there a lot more colors involved. But the animation is smoother. There is a lot of variety in the houses that you drive past, whereas in the past, the houses looked fairly uniform. Some of the houses that have special elements like gargoyles are very well drawn. But the knock on the graphics is that the pseudo-isometric view makes the attempt at 3D drawing a little weak. The proportions are not quite right in the buildings and people. Sound: 7/10 The sound effects in the game are great, especially when you break a window. There are effects for practically every event in the game. I believe that this is intentionally to make the game feel more chaotic like the paper route seems to be. So this is very fitting. In the meantime, the background music is a steady groove that pits as a contrast to the pace of the game. These elements work together nicely. Reviewer's Tilt: 7/10 I was a big fan of the first game, and this sequel does not dissappoint. The only problem is that the game is quite hard to play. And that steering of the bicycle is not as seemless as it should be. However, it is a fun game that is worth trying.
