if this is truly going back to the good old paper mario gameplay, i'mn probably gonna get 3ds just 4 it lol
We get our first look at a 2D hero in a 3D world.
Nintendo has certainly been generous with the 3DS thus far, putting lots of its classic characters and beloved franchises on its newest portable system. Bucking the third dimensional trend of the other games, Paper Mario stars the ultraslim version of everyone's favorite plumber. The demonstration in Nintendo's booth was video only, but we took a peek to see what Mario's next adventure is going to look like.
The last entry in the Paper Mario franchise, Super Paper Mario, moved away from the turn-based combat that was paramount in its predecessors. However, the newest iteration goes back to the original formula, putting Mario in slow-paced encounters against the goombas and spiny shells he meets along the way. In the demo, he was accompanied by a happy chain chomp, presumably a friend who tags along in this role-playing adventure.
Although the gameplay looks very similar to previous games, the visuals have seen an overhaul. The 3D effect is subtle compared to some of the more eye-popping games out there, but effective nonetheless. By and large, this looks like a typical 2D adventure, with Mario and most of the environment and enemies in the same form you've come to expect. However, every so often, some flashy effect demands your attention. If you jump underneath a hovering brick, you can see the pieces fly off in all directions; when a wiggling cuts across your path, it appears as if he's walking right off the screen; and during one segment, Mario triggered a switch that caused the background to disappear, and it's eerie shimmer looked cool in the 3D display.
There's no word yet on when this will be released or what other features to expect, but it looks to carry on the proud Paper Mario tradition. Check back to GameSpot for more information on this 2D adventure with a twist in the future.
Ok, well, from the screens, this is certainly not a port. However, hopefully the new content will add to the game (though it's tough to do that for this game)
Paper Mario was a beast of a game and sucked away many of my childhood hours. I'm curious to see how a game whose novelty resided in the fact that it was blatantly and unapologetically 2D will port to a 3D device.
I loved Paper mario games, and mario & luigi series, so pardon my language but the 3ds and this game are gonna be so F****** AWEEEESSOOOOOOMMMMMEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Isnt it YOUR money? Im sorry im so glad i didnt have the parents that forced saving upon you.. i started working sophomore year 4 years later after spending god knows how much on games.. ive got two cars and enough saved to get me through each semester of college. Basically dude just go buy it dont let em see lol.. i wasnt a fan of the 3d untill this stuff was announced.. im really looking forward to ocarina but hopefully as it is nintendo they usually keep prices down.. so hopefully the price isnt going to burn a hole..
@nasaguy71 not sure when 3DS is to be released. you would think it would be during christmas (more money made) but nintendo did show it off at E3 to check how consumers would react and to see if any design, controller, and etc. would have to be changed, so only time will tell so patience is a MUST.
Nintendo has done it once again cant wait! Time to wait to pre-order or what not im must have IT NOW!!!
I cant wait to see sony wriggle out of this one....psp3d? BUT OH NO!! THEY MAY NEED TO BRING DOWN THEYRE COVETED SCREEN SIZE TO PULL IT OFF WITHOUT GLASSES!!!!
Turn based Paper Mario... YES! Finally, a real Paper Mario, it looks great! Oh also, they have really outdone themselves with the launch titles their showcasing. Starfox, Paper Mario, ANIMAL CROSSING, which if you haven't checked out you should, because it looks so much better than it's predecessors. Oh yeah and not using Glasses, that's ******* brilliant! Now we must learn patience. Ok, breathe, in, out, in, screw it IWANTNOW!
Thank you so much for the turn-based Paper Mario, Nintendo!!! The 3DS, while I had my doubts, is going to be the greatest handheld console ever made, and may easily take the PSP out of the market.
reading this is torturing me because now I want one so bad. I've always wanted paper mario for the ds
Oh man, Paper Mario at its best! Don't get me wrong, I quite enjoyed SPM, but the fact it was branded under the Paper moniker prevented me from enjoying it to the fullest, as I keep on expecting its great RPG elements.
Cool to see Paper Mario come to a handheld! But really, this is quite a shocker, considering the 3DS's big gig is, well, 3D. When the Wii and DS came out, Nintendo was cramming as much motion and touch control into games as they could. I like the idea of 3D, but its nice to see that not all the launch games have to use it obsessively.
I love the turn-based combat of the Mario adventure-RPG titles, so it's nice to see them going back to it for this one. And, yeah, the 3DS is going to be a beast. The DS and Wii had a relatively slow roll-out of must-have titles, but it looks like Nintendo is planning to fire on all cylinders with the 3DS.
Damn. They're going back to the old turn based gameplay. They should have stuck with the super paper mario platforming gameplay with the whole flip from 2D to 3D thing but improved on it. I doubt I'll get this now.
Yay finally paper Mario returns to rpg glad to see they didn't stick with the super paper Mario style, I cant wait to see the what the story is in this one
I'm glad Paper Mario is finally getting put on a handheld. Now there's still hope for Smash Bros. game after all!
I like Super Paper Mario, but I wished they should have put it RPG like the other two. This one I just know it's going be good. Paper Mario is back. :)
I've thought about getting a 3DS, and this could be the deal breaker. Now if Microsoft hadn't taken over Banjo-Kazooie....
I thought this was a remake of the original Paper Mario, but this is totally new! Paper Mario is one of my favorite series so I'm pretty excited.
This sounds awesome. I can't wait for it to be released. Paper Mario has always been one of my favorites.
