Why do I get the feeling Paper Mario is going to become like Final Fantasy?

In the sense that while all the games share the same main title (Paper Mario) each one of them will all have their own separate game play, combat and leveling up mechanics, while still sharing certain similarities.
Not sure I like the idea of that but its a weird feeling I'm getting.

I wanted to make the Disgaea comparison, but then realized Nippon Ichi had enough common sense to bring the actual games to the PSP first before making derp changes.

IS likes to tweak their game style I wish more companies were willing to take that kind of risk in their games more often. they know they have the potential to alienate part of their fanbase and still opt for the risk in favor of seeing what the reward might be.

By which you mean two sequels that you just refuse to accept as sequels?
Otherwise, you also have to consider Super Mario 64 a spin-off of the first four Mario games.

Either way, it's too early to say it's like Final Fantasy. Give it one more game, and if it's a far cry away from Paper Mario 64 and TTYD, then you can start making claims.

I've liked ever Paper Mario up until now... I just don't know about this one. I'm optimistic about it: I think it will at least be a fun diversion.
I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't have preferred something more like the first or second game, though.

How so? FF games are terrible.
It doesn't matters what you think of the series (or how terrible they became since the PS2 era), the first 9 FF games have been a major influence for the gaming industry. Paper Mario is fun but it wasn't any close of an influence as FF was.

Regardless (don't worry, I agree they are obviously sequels)- It's not a pattern. 2 instances out of 4 games doesn't work that way to create a pattern. There needs to be more entries following this to do that. If the next game is full RPG like the first two, it messes it up.
However it can turn into a different pattern if we get 2 RPGs, 2 different types of games, 2 RPGs, 2 different types, etc. So only time will tell.
On that note, there ARE crazy people who consider Super Mario 64 to be a "spin-off".
