It doesn't really matter, because coins are coming out of your ears in this game. I was almost relieved to have a way to ditch a bunch of them quickly.

    Seriously though... (huge rant incoming)

What was Nintendo thinking, putting a goon there who wants to rip you off? In Toad Town Tunnels, you get the shady looking, shady named Chet Rippo, who screams, "I'MMA RIP YE OFF OHOHOHOHOHO!!!!!!" but actually has some pretty nice items for sale. Then, in TTYD, which opens with Mario being told to watch his step, being attacked by a jerk who may have been a predator, watching some dude with a spear get KO'ed by the mafia, and then promptly getting mugged, he's asked to invest a pile of coins in a green guy who tells you flat out that he's going to leave with it and may come back broke. And he doesn't want just a few, he'll accept nothing less than 100. Bear in mind that this is a super-shady port town filled with the scum of the earth and several guys who openly admit to you that they're criminals on the lamb. And if you do decide to give to this green guy (bear in mind that money's a bit tight in the early chapters), he disappears for a good while.

But then, after chapter 7, he comes back, and if you believed him, he has a huge windfall (and I mean huge) for you, which is a great help in stocking up for the final dungeon/boss. And if you didn't help him, he gloats about how much money he made, but doesn't give you any. Lesson: trust Lumpy.

Now, we get to Sticker Star, where, in a (supposedly) idyllic burg, Mario is asked by a dude behind a house (who has no name, shady or not, and looks exactly like all the other perfectly normal toads) to buy a rare, expensive sticker. Hmm, where have we seen this before? Anyway, as the past games have been teaching us to trust NPCs, and that if things don't go your way you can always beat them up and get our stuff anyway (Gus and Kent), it figures that he's probably got a Repel Gel sticker or something that you want, a lot. Maybe it's even an HP-up heart. And of course, according to Iwata Asks, money makes this game go 'round, so it makes total sense to give it to him.

And he rips you off and runs away. No chance to punish him, no way to get your precious money back (I'm going to pretend that IS was completely unaware that money is almost useless in this game and every coin matters), and it wasn't even funny.

So, let's pretend you smelled a rat(ooey) and withheld your coins. He lowers the price. Well, in SPM, you had to haggle at one point to progress the game, but if you haggled too much he'd raise his price again and then not budge. So will you take it now? Absolutely. Burned again.

Now, let's pretend that you haggled too much, wanting to see exactly how low it would go. Oh no, he ran off. Well, no biggie- except you don't know what he was selling, and are bound to want to either reset or go back on a subsequent playthrough to see what he had to offer. And when you do, you get burned.

Realistically, there are only three ways to avoid getting ripped off by him: Not finding him (unreliable, and he's still there on later playthroughs), chasing him off, but then not wanting to do another playthrough (which is bad because the game should have had more replay value), or using a FAQ (which is lame, but apparently intended). Speaking of using a FAQ, you practically have to use one to get those missable diary pages. Poor game design, that.

So I don't know if IS found it funny to put him in here or not, but the game's humor is supposed to be for the players. Humor for the devs should be relegated to cameos and things players can enjoy, but this is just stupid.

I needed the Poison Mushroom for either the museum or opening the door in 2-1, and I had plenty of coins to burn, so I came out of that deal pretty well off.

No. I just don't like the game playing a dirty trick on me so the devs can have a laugh at my expense. They can do that easily enough without taking my stuff and while still allowing me to trash the perpetrator (Francis). He was funny to the player, too.

I could potentially see this as being helpful for getting into 2-1, but if that's it's purpose, why don't they tell you what it is so you don't buy it if you don't need it?

It's representative of larger conveyance issues, as well as the inconsistencies with past PM games that can screw long time fans over.

Being able to jump on a Pokey, for instance, or not being able to jump on Bowser.

This is where I start being disagreeable.

Now we're just looking for reasons to turn any flaw of the game into another reason to hate it, when really it's not what needs to be worried about.

"Oh no, I can jump on Pokey now! What is this mad world that Paper Mario has become?!"
Besides, if we want to get specific, you still can't jump on yellow Pokeys, and you already couldn't jump on Bowser in Super Paper Mario.

Look there are legitimate reasons to hate this game, but I'm really thinking TTYD has spoiled most of the people here now.

Whoa who is this thug "Green Guy" your speaking of in TTYD, because I did probably 3-4 full run-through's and never even heard of this until today...

Is it the green hat guy with a spear who threatens you to pay 20 coins to pass him, or fight trying? Cause if so, I always just waited till the end of Chapter 2 and beat him in every file. (Well except my first file when I decided to fight him in the begging of the game...)
If your talking about some Bandit/ Goomba, then I don't recall any "deal" of that sort.

Edit: "Besides, if we want to get specific, you still can't jump on yellow Pokeys, and you already couldn't jump on Bowser in Super Paper Mario."

I thought we could always jump on the green Pokeys, unless they were poisonous, which in that case I may have forgotten quite a few things about TTYD. <.< That and the only real reason why couldn't jump on Bowser in SPM was simply because he was taller than the high of your jump (and the fact Bowser himself can jump in that fight.)

tbh that toad saved my life. I bought it and I needed exactly that for the desert door in the second world. At the time I had thought that I probably didn't know where else to buy it and would have to grind for it but that little dude saved me, and I will always remember him.

When did I say I HATED this game for this alone? Issues like that are all over, I just gave two examples.

Yeah, not being able to jump on a Pokey is a big deal because most anybody who has ever played a Mario game knows that you aren't supposed to. This leads to bringing an album full of useless hammers to the fight.

Bowser can be jumped on in every Mario and Luigi RPG and both turn based Paper Mario games. And also I believe SMRPG. Why we should randomly assume that SPM overwrites that, or that the most useful stickers in the game suddenly are useless, makes no sense.

This is a legitimate issue, and this toad is representative of that. If it was just him, nobody would really care.

SPM showed us that hey maybe you can't always jump on him after all. If anything it should've opened your mind to that possibility.

And if a Pokey has no spikes compared to other Pokeys, chances are that it can be jumped on. I picked that up the second I saw the green pokeys, and I was going into that level blind.

And what kind of under-prepared person wouldn't think that maybe they'd need an adequate amount of both jump and hammer stickers? And if nothing else, by the time you get to Bowser, you should notice that Iron Jumps will let you jump on spiky enemies. If you were really worried about not having enough of a type of sticker, you'd have just kept Iron Jumps all the time.

And if someone has problems with everything in the game, then they need to take it out on the actual problems, don't go to all the nitpicky issues and go "this is symbolic of the whooooole game" all pretentious-like. Just get to the point. Besides, you have to go out of your way to find that toad anyway.

So again, one platformer game overrides five RPGs in an RPG game?

I sort of figured that the boss would be dangerous to jump on since most threatening Pokeys are. Why would I waste any space at all in my, at this point, two sticker pages, on stickers that wouldn't have an effect? And why should I split myself between iron jump sand hammers? Space is very limited, and say what you will, it still comes down to a guessing game. Too much of even one thing, and you have to die or run.

A dumb secret is still dumb, sorry. What was its point even? And while it's symbolic, it is also an example of the actual problem, just a smaller one.

    @Skyminxyz:

The green guy referred to is Lumpy the Green Ratooie guy on the Rogueport docks. He can take up to 300 coins from you before the end of chapter 2, 100 coins each loan, and after chapter 6 or 7, he comes back and gives you 3 times as many coins as you gave him, giving back 999 coins if you loaned him 300, rather than just 900.
