5-3 Long Fall Falls - the 3rd time?

I got both comet pieces but did not get the secret door thing. And now even though it didn't kill me on the first two times through the huge fish/cheep kills me every time. Is there a new strategy other than avoid it - or anything at all that will help the 3rd time through?

Imagine the river in 3 sections - middle, left and right. Position yourself between two sections - i.e. Be close to the middle but slightly to one side. Usually the fish will attack the middle, where you'll be able to move to the side you're closest to.

It also helps to occasionally switch sides if given a chance - such as after the fish jumps and is taking time getting back to position with his propeller fin.
