Today's Feature: Aeons - Summons or Fighters?

Final Fantasy X called summons as "Aeons". Unlike other Final Fantasy games, summons in this game was given more personality than what FFVIII has offered us. They are no longer mere support firepower or defensive spells, but are, in fact, characters on their own!

Once the Aeon is summoned, your entire party will leave the battlefield to give way to the Aeon who wanted to take on the enemies alone. Aeons are proud creatures who

Only Yuna can do the summoning in your party, so you have to take care of her if you want to call upon your beastly friends. At some point in time, Aeons grow stronger as Yuna grow with better stats... Just a minor information for those who are not aware of such fact.

There are only 8 Aeons in Final Fantasy X, although we may say 10 if we treat the Magus Sisters as 3 Aeons: Valefor, Shiva, Ifrit, Ixion, Bahamut, Yojimbo, Anima and the Magus Sisters, composed of Sandy, Cindy and Mindy.

Read on!

---

VALEFOR

Valefor is the first Aeon of Yuna. You may think, at first that it is a wind-based summon, but it is not. Despite its grotesque appearance, Valefor is one powerful and useful Aeon with his two "non-elemental" Overdrive attacks.

A flying Aeon as she is, it is fun to note that certain fiends will not be able to hit her like Raldos and Dual Horns.

It is also noteworthy that Yuna seems to have a special attachment to bird-dragon summon. it may be attributed to the fact that it is her first Aeon.

You will acquire Valefor in the Besaid Temple.

Overdrive: Energy Ray & Energy Blast

Both deal non-elemental damage to all enemies; the latter being stronger because of the fac tthat it is an optional overdrive which can be learned by doing a little sidequest.

(In order to obtain her second Overdrive Energy Blast: just before you're about to leave Besaid Village for the first time, find the girl with the dog (she's now in item shop) I bet you saw earlier and talk to her until she says 'that her dog found something'). Go in the third house on the right of the village and 'talk' to the dog inside. You'll get a special item,
and Valefor gains Energy Blast.)

Special Attack: Sonic Wongs

A very useful attack which causes damage to a single target and may cause slow (delays turn)

Break Damage Limit evoked by Yuna's ultimate weapon, Nirvana; Power it up with Moon Crest.

IFRIT

Ifrit is our resident fire-elemental summon.  This time, Square decided to give him a different appeal by making him look more animalistic... He looks like a dog/wolf with horns now!

Basically, he is just like Valefor. The only big advantage he has is that he can use fire magic on to himself to replenish his depleted HP.

You will acquire Ifrit in the Kilika Temple.

Overdrive: Hellfire

A fiery attack that hits all tagets with fire-element.

Special Attack: Meteor Strike

Deals non-physical / non-magical damage to a single target.

As quoted from Split Infinity, "Ifrit's Meteor Strike is special type attack, not magical, not physical. I know this is strange, but I have proof. Jumbo Flan is immune to physicals, and Juggernaut to magicals. Guess what? Meteor Strike works on both of them. So, in case you're tired of seeing Anima's ain, Ifrit is the guy to use".

Break Damage Limit evoked by Wakka's ultimate weapon, World Champion; Power it up with Jupiter Crest

IXION

For the second time, Ramuh took a vacation and left his position to the horse, Ixion. I don't see anything special about this animal except for his distinguished horn.

Anyway, just think of him as the lightning counterpart of Ifrit. Use his lightning magic to refill his HP.

You will acquire Ixion at the Djose Temple

Overdrive: Thor's Hammer

Lightning-elemental attack that hits all targets.

Special Attack: Aerospark

A lightning-elemenetal attack to a single target; can negate spell effects (dispel).

Break Damage Limit evoked by Kimahri's ultimate weapon, Spirit Lance; Power it up with Saturn Crest

SHIVA

Unlike the past Final Fantasy games, Shiva is now ranked as one of the more powerful Aeons. Many people also thinks that she is too sexy and becomes many young men's favorite Aeon.

She is not just an ice-element version of Ifrit and Ixion. Shiva is more than that. By default, Shiva is very agile (high Agility). It means that she will be evading many of the enemies physical attacks, which is very useful.

You can acquire Shiva at the Macalania Temple

Overdrive: Diamond Dust

Ice-elemental attack against all enemies.

Special Attack: Heavenly Strike

An ice attack that may delay enemy's turn.

Break Damage Limit evoked by Lulu's ultimate weapon, Onion Knight; power it up with Venus Crest.

BAHAMUT

Okay... This "new age" Bahamut is quite different in terms of physical appearance. He was given colorful feathers... I mean, wings; He stands on two feet with a kick *** stance; and he got a helicopter-like propeller on his back.

Bahamut is a true brute. He has high strength and defense. Have him learn a curative magic and haste and he'll be a killing machine.

You can acquire Bahamut at the Bevelle Temple

Overdrive: Mega Flare

Strong non-elemental attack to all enemies.

Special Attack: Impulse

Non-elemental attack against all enemies.

Break Damage Limit is inherent to Bahamut.

YOJIMBO

What?! Final Fantasy X does not have Odin or Gilgamesh! Yes. Instead, they gave us this greedy samurai who resembles the FFVI boss, Katana Soul.

Yojimbo is a unique summon. Instead of bein gable to command him to use one of his abilities, you will have to pay him gil for every attack! I always give him one gil. If he thinks he is wiser, he's WRONG!

Once you pay him, he will use one of his 4 attacks. His regular attacks consist of his dog Daigoro and throws some Kozuka, both hit a single target. He may also use his multi-hit Wakizashi attack.

No 1-hit KO attack? Get ready for Zanmato, which can kill everyone and enemy!

You can acquire Yojimbo at the Cave of the Stolen Fayth

Overdrive: Zanmato

Instant death to ANY enemy, including Monster Arena monsters.

Special Attacks:

Daigoro (single target)
Kozuka (single target)
Wakizashi (single target)
Wakizashi (all target)

Break Damage Limit evoked by Auron's ultimate weapon, Masamune.

ANIMA

Here's my favorite Aeon in Final Fantasy X... Anima. I don't what she is... A fish maybe?

Well, Anima has the single most powerful attack in Final Fantasy X in the form of his Overdrive... That explains why Square has to chain him and put charms all over her body... so as to prevent her from using her power to the fullest.

Hight HP and high attack rating, Anima is truly a bbest in its most literal sense... physically and innately.

You can acquire Anima at the Baaj Temple

(Note: You must have opened all the treasure chests in al lthe preceeding temples)

Overdrive: Oblivion

The strongest attack in Final Fantasy X!

Special Attack: Pain

A non-elemental attack to a single target with a strong chance to casue instant-death.

Break Damage Limit is inherent to Anima.

MAGUS SISTERS

These Power Puff Girls-inspired summons may look like a joke in their outfit but they pack real firepower.

Just like Yojimbo, you will not be able to directly control them. Instead, you will be given several general commands to choose from like "Use support magic", "Use physical attack", and "combine powers" (aka Overdrive). Once you use, they may either follow your command or 'Taking a break...".

You can acquire the Magus Sisters at the Remiem Temple.

(Note: You must have the Key Items: Blossom Crown and Flower Scepter)

Overdrive: Delta Attack

Causes strong non-elemental attack to all enemies.

(NOTE: Delta Attack in the US version is single hit only. The International version is multi-hit to make the long summoning sequence all worth it... Otherwise, Anima has the best Overdrive.)

Special Attack -

- Cindy - "Camisade":

Strong multi-target non-elemental attack.

- Sandy - "Razzia":

Very strong single-hit multi target attack.

- Mindy - "Passado":

Multi-hit non-elemental attack.

(Note: If you can max the attack of the Magus Sisters, Mindy's "Passado" will be one of the attacks you would want to use most of the time, especially in the Monster Arena.)

Break Damage Limit is inherent to the Magus Sisters.

Well, though the summons were really cool in FFX, I rarely used them at first, then never at the end, because the sphere grid is just too kick ***! When Tidus, Wakka, and Auron are on haste, with quick hit, and max strenght, who needs aeons?!

Yojimbo was based on FFVI's Katana Soul boss.

Magus sisters are bosses in FF IV while in the giant I think. I liked the gameplay of FFX with summons, but Bahamut is my favorite and in here he was killed by the design, WTF is that round Hula hula in his back doing?

Wow, this is the feature story? From 2006? Huh...oh well. I put hundreds of hours into this game a few years ago and got all the aeons, but I am one of the unlucky ones who has never seen zanmato. I never really used yojimbo and didn't really care if I never saw it, maybe one day I'll jump back into Spira and give it a go.

I'm still playing Final Fantasy X. I'm still trying to beat Seymor on Gagazet Mountain, the third time he appears.

ff10 seemed to be a very easy ff as you could barely get lost on a wide map like in the other games role on ff13
