高画質のハイビジョン映像を長時間記録できる次世代ＤＶＤをめぐっては、▽ソニーや松下電器、日立などが推し進める「ブルーレイディスク」と、▽東芝やマイクロソフトなどの「ＨＤＤＶＤ」の２つの方式が激しい主導権争いを繰り広げてきました。しかし、去年の後半から本格化した再生機と録画機の販売競争の結果、日本国内ではブルーレイ陣営が９０％以上のシェアを握るなど攻勢を強めています。また、映画などのソフトの供給でも、ことしに入ってからハリウッドの大手映画会社「ワーナー・ブラザース」がブルーレイに一本化すると発表するなど、ＨＤＤＶＤ陣営は劣勢に立たされていました。関係者によりますと、こうした状況を受けて、「ＨＤＤＶＤ」を主導する「東芝」は、現在、青森県内の工場で進めている機器の生産を全面的に停止し、事業から撤退する方針を固めました。店頭での機器の販売は当面続けるとしていますが、新たな開発も取りやめる方針で、事業の撤退に伴う東芝の損失は数百億円に上るものと見込まれます。これにより、かつてのビデオの規格をめぐる「ＶＨＳ・ベータ戦争」のようにメーカーどうしが繰り広げた次世代ＤＶＤの規格争いは、ブルーレイによって事実上統一される見通しになりました。
