Yakuza comes from three words; ya ku sa. In old Japanese tung these are numbers and are an old gambling game. At the end of the last dynasty of Edo Samurai the noble lords and protectors of the lands were no longer needed and according to their code they were not allowed to earn money that their Shogun did not give them, so the largest majority that did not commit Seppaku {suicide by ritual disembowment} turned to gambling. As time passed they formed a mafia organisation called Yakuza and they exist still today. History lesson ends.
