The Devil runs riot in the UK..

London, U.K., February 8, 2007 - Inspired by the launch of Devil May Cry 4, the 'Set Free the Devil Inside' survey results are in, and they show just how devilish the UK's population actually is.

Traditionally a reserved culture, the results of the survey found that the British are more than willing to set free their inner devil. Almost one in four people, upon finding that their finger had ripped through the toilet paper whilst making their daily motions, would happily wipe their finger on the face towel rather than wash it in the sink. A similar number of respondents also admitted to having a sniff!

The clichéd reserve of the British public in the bedroom was also dismissed, with 94 per cent of respondents more than happy to tie their partners to the bed for hours. The survey also found that almost four out of five people would rather spank than be spanked.

Outside the bedroom, Brits were happy to cheat on their partners, with two out of three people believing it isn't cheating if your partner doesn't find out. The public should also be wary of Brits with superpowers such as X-ray vision, as almost four out of five people would use it to peek into changing rooms.

Brits were also not afraid to let loose their inner devil in the workplace, with over half willing to stab a friend in the back to gain a promotion. Six out of ten were also willing to sleep with their boss and then blackmail them afterwards to gain a promotion.

The survey found that the most devilish inhabitants of the UK were based in Scotland, followed closely by people in East Anglia and the South East of England. Wales and Northern Ireland held the fourth and fifth most devilish location in the UK respectively.

"The site relies completely on user generated content and we have been extremely amused and sometimes shocked with the content that has been created. Visitors to the site created polls covering everything from office life to sex and relationships, in addition to writing confessions about devilish activities they had undertaken," said Leo Tan, Capcom. "What this survey makes clear is that there's a little devil inside all of us just waiting to come out."

Additional statistics taken from www.setfreethedevilinside.com include:

Sex and Relationships

  • 78 per cent of Brits would rather spank than be spanked
  • 61 per cent of Brits would sleep with someone to gain access to a sibling
  • 60 per cent of Brits if asked whether their friend is single would either say they are already taken or gay if they were interested in the enquirer themself
  • 54 per cent of Brits upon getting two numbers on a night out, would call one and then the other the next day
  • 62 per cent of Brits would sleep with Angeline Jolie's top half grafted on to Anne Widdecombe's bottom half

Daily Life

  • 63 per cent of Brits would choose to lose their taste rather than the ability to see, smell or feel
  • 63 per cent of Brits have done a runner from a taxi cab without paying

Law When asked what laws are most acceptable to break:

  • 36% said speeding in your car
  • 30% said using drugs
  • 20% said not declaring tax

Notes to the editor: The 'Set Free the Devil Inside' online microsite currently has over three thousand registered members. All polls were created and completed by registered members of the public. Additional statistics are available upon request. Statistics used in this press release were collected on 12:00pm on Wednesday 6th February 2008.

Australia gives the verdict on DMC4. (360 Version)

DEVIL MAY CRY 4

When it was announced in March last year that Devil May Cry 4 would see simultaneous release on multiple consoles; Sony no doubt commenced licking their wounds, as Microsoft rejoiced as they smelt blood; realizing their new-found stranglehold on the action genre. Not only did they still have the exclusive rights to Ninja Gaiden II, they now shared joint-custody of Sony's stray child, Devil May Cry 4.

The only concern regarding the announcement was: will Devil May Cry handle itself in the same smooth fashion it does on the PlayStation? Can its intricate control-scheme be emulated for the Xbox? I'm here to tell you: Yes, and oh my, yes.

Situated in the coastal town of Fortuna, Devil May Cry 4's plot follows the co-existing stories of Nero and, a familiar face, Dante. Their paths cross when Dante literally drops into a meeting held by an elite group who worship the Legendary Dark Knight Sparda, The Order of the Sword; a group Nero is closely tied to. Things take a turn for the worse when Dante, with expert precision, cuts down the Order's numbers; sparking chaos. Dante soon splits, and we're left with Nero who is now intent on stopping Dante, who for some reason wishes to systematically rid of the Order. To make matters worse for Nero, his love interest Kyrie, like any typical damsel in distress, gets herself taken hostage. It's just not Nero's day. Also returning from other DMC games are the likes of Trish and Lady (of DMC and DMC3), naturally Lucia (of DMC2) doesn't make an appearance as by a technicality, Dante hasn't even met her yet!

Across three games already, Devil May Cry has undergone its fair share of changes, most of which received poor to lukewarm reception. For fans of the original Devil May Cry, you'll notice this latest entry reverts back to the basics in several ways - in its art direction, satirical humour and the ability to leave you reeling after each battle escalates beyond expectation. Devil May Cry 4 does everything that made the first game a cult classic and goes beyond; introducing many fresh faces and new ways to approach the exhilarating combat. I would argue that this is the most solid of all of the Devil May Cry games.

For those who were never Sony owners, Devil May Cry is a rather simplistic concept. It's story mode is comprised of twenty missions in all. In each of these missions, players must perform daring feats of platforming replete with an unhealthy dose of close-quarters combat, and solve the occasional noodle-scratcher. Upon completion of a mission, the player is given a grade, ranging from a lowly D to the elusive S (and perhaps beyond, I'm simply not good enough to know). Players can better their chances at scoring well by beating the mission within a certain time frame, as well as collecting a large percentage of the red orbs within the level (these orbs also serve as the world currency and allow you to buy items).

The combat, thankfully, is similar to the original Devil May Cry, so fans of the original should feel at home. Both Nero and Dante are armed to the teeth with an arsenal of unholy damnation; and they're not afraid of letting loose. At the mere mashing of buttons, you're able to unleash unrelenting combos on your remorseful foes. For the seasoned DMC veterans, they may look to utilise the standard control scheme, whereas newcomers would be wiser selecting automatic (making combos much easier). This is not only more enjoyable; it does wonders for the learning curve.

Nero brings a new gameplay element to the table in Devil May Cry 4. Aptly named 'The Devil Bringer', Nero's right arm is a utility that's handy for grappling throughout the game; for example in context-sensitive portions, where you progress by grappling your way through a simplistic maze of 'grapple orbs' that are suspended in mid-air. Not only that but you are able to use it to draw your enemies closer to you, which makes it possible to easily pull-off some 'smokin' sick style' combos (the aforementioned veterans would understand that one). Not only that but he is equipped with the Red Queen (his single-edge sword that has a cool Exceed ability) and the Blue Rose (his revolver). When presented with the option of all of these three weapons, coupled with their possible advancements at upgrade stations throughout the game; it's enough to make hack-and-slash enthusiasts salivate uncontrollably. If you were ever unsure about Nero usurping Dante's throne, your uncertainty will be put to rest. Nero is one cool cat.

Dante isn't without his moments, however. His 'too cool for school' attitude makes his dialogue hilarious at points, as he re-introduces the punch-line to the standard video game. Not only does Dante talk the talk, he also walks the walk -- he fights, too! Toting Ebony and Ivory amongst an arsenal of goodies, he is a force to be reckoned with. Styles, from Devil May Cry 3, make a return to Dante's seemingly endless abilities. Though to make them more accessible, you're now able to change styles midplay with the press of a button.

Devil May Cry wouldn't be complete without Devil Trigger. The power is not only limited to Dante, though, as Nero also has the ability to summon supreme power from the darkest pits of Hell to aid him in destroying literally anyone in his path. The temporary power-up doesn't last too long, though it can be prolonged by buying power-ups at the aforementioned upgrade stations. Not only are they fun to play around with; they look pretty damn cool, too!

While the mechanics of the game aren't problematic in the least, a lot of gamers may have an issue with camera placement. Capcom has kept the same detached camera system in use for many of its staple franchises - for dramatic effect. Inexplicably, however, it also sought to break the 180º rule at every turn, literally, which means that with every cut to a new camera angle, you will find your running direction reversed, causing unnecessary frustration. While this isn't a huge issue, it's aggravating to be running through scores of corridors only to keep being turned around by a bothersome camera.

Devil May Cry 4 is a game that's very easy on the eyes. The models for all of the primary characters look great and follow the same art direction seen in the original, as it retains a certain Gothic atmosphere that is so paramount to the series. Nero appears as he is, an arrogant and untamed individual, and this is shown through his visual mannerisms; the same can be said for Dante. It's clear the art team had fascinating ideas in designing DMC4. The world's environments are portrayed in pixel beauty; from morbid Fortuna's Castle in the opening chapters, through to a forest that looks as though it's alive. Unfortunately though, many of the maps are recycled throughout the narrative progression of the game. While, I can't pinpoint where it all breaks down, it's almost half the game it should be. It was a disappointment for me to see a subtle developing shortcut strike Capcom down a peg.

As with all of the games before it, Devil May Cry 4 has a soundtrack comprised of a selection of industrial and almost electronic-metal melodies. Mixed in with background ambiance, it makes for the perfect setting to kick your feet up and serve up the hurt with a side of fries. DMC fans may hear familiar sounds, as Capcom have flown in different guys who've worked on a number of their previous DMC titles. It's a safe bet that fans of old and new will find something amidst the collection to tap their foot to.

The voice-acting in DMC4 was marginally above average, as numerous parts fluctuated in performance. Most of the primary characters held their own in delivering their roles convincingly; Dante as I've already mentioned was stellar. Johnny Bosch (yes, of Power Rangers fame -- 'I'm a frog') was a surprise for me as Nero, as he had many classic exchanges with Dante, and various bosses, that could very well become iconic. Other roles such as Kyrie and Agnus were a little weaker in delivery, though still allowed the game to maintain its 'cinematic vibe' thanks to the quality of the voice acting performances.

Devil May Cry 4 Hands-On - The Return of Dante

Capcom shows off an updated version of DMC and sheds some new light on its hero--and his allies.

Ever since we got our first glimpse of Devil May Cry 4 on the PlayStation 3, we've wondered what's become of longtime franchise hero Dante. Although newcomer Nero looks similar and plays quite closely to the franchise's white-coiffed poster boy, he doesn't have Dante's baggage. But longtime fans of the series that have grown attached to everyone's favorite demon killer shouldn't despair, as the series' original fancy hero is back and playable in DMC4. Following an update on the game and a showcase of Nero-centric gameplay at a recent Capcom press event, a trailer closed out the presentation and showed off Dante in action. Thankfully, Capcom had an updated version of the game for the PlayStation 3 on hand for us to try out, which let us see how the latest entry in the series is coming along.

The demo was an update of what we played at the Tokyo Game Show last year, and it also included a brief sampling of an area that had only been seen in a trailer and a boss fight. The TGS area had us guiding Nero through a city overrun with demons and onto a dock area. The game's performance has tightened up and was more consistent. Combat was still basically the same, but the demo did include new moves for Nero's mystically powered arm. These included the ability to grab distant enemies and jerk them in close for a beating, a context-sensitive throw attack, and the ability to power up your sword by revving it up with the shoulder button, all of which afforded some cool new combo options.

The two new areas were a snowy castle and an intense boss fight. The castle and the snowy path leading to it were seen briefly in the 2005 Electronic Entertainment Expo trailer but hadn't since been playable. This level let us run up to a massive castle in the distance and face off against icy enemies, who were best dealt with using the context-sensitive throw. In this case, the throw let us snag them and windmill them for a bit, which made it possible to throw them into each other. This was key to taking them out, because they were self-replicating menaces. Breakable pillars scattered around the area yielded life-restoring green orbs, which helped make up for the times when we weren't able to dodge out of harm's way.

The boss fight was one painful can of worms to open. The battle began with Nero innocently walking into a seemingly deserted town and meeting up with Berial, a foul-tempered demon not unlike The Lord of the Rings' balrog. One testosterone-infused verbal exchange later, and Nero was mixing it up with the massive demon. The battle required us to figure out how to extinguish the creature's protective afro of fire, leaving him vulnerable to Nero's context-sensitive attack. As we've seen in the previous games, DMC's boss demons are generally ill tempered and not what you'd describe as pushovers. Berial will uphold that tradition with a painful and varied array of fire attacks ranging from a flaming sword and explosive volleys of flame to a massive screen-filling explosion. Though Berial's run to kill Nero trashed the houses in the town (which at least yielded green orbs), you'll still have to put a lot of effort into not getting stomped. However, once you get his pattern down, the fight is challenging but doable. We also have to emphasize the incredible sense of satisfaction that's derived from Nero's context-sensitive butt kicking. The visceral pleasure of beating the snot out of a towering demon is great, although we have to say it made us miss rumble a little.

Beyond the playable demo, the presentation and closing trailer showed off Dante in action. Though details were somewhat scarce, it was revealed that he'll return with the fighting **** seen in DMC3 and its special edition. This time out, players won't have to stick to a set **** as you'll be able to switch between them all on the fly, which should make combat pretty interesting. As for when Dante will be playable, it sounds as though players will gain control over the veteran demon killer as the story progresses. Capcom is still keeping plot details mostly under wraps, but we know that Nero is part of an order of demon hunters who's been dispatched to take care of some problems--and that he'll cross paths with Dante. How that meeting goes is going to be interesting. We expect, at the very least, for Dante to ask about Nero's familiar sense of ****-possibly before trying to beat him up...time will tell. We do know the game is set after the events in the original DMC but before DMC2, at least.

As we mentioned, Devil May Cry 4's visuals are coming together nicely. The TGS areas were more polished and the new locales had a nice, refined look to them already. Nero's fight against Berial was likely the most impressive thing we saw, due mainly to the sheer size of the demon. We were pleased by the game's performance overall, which stayed steady. The camera worked fairly well, although it got awkward in a few spots, most notably when Berial had us cornered. Still, for an incomplete game, the camera system managed to keep the focus where we needed it. Audio is shaping up equally well, with the now-familiar silence-and-rock formula we've come to expect from the DMC games in full effect. The sound effects, most notably Nero's gun and the death cries of demons, are all satisfying and suit the action well. The voice acting we heard was on par with the previous games, offering a mix of good and cheesy.

Based on our time with the work-in-progress version of the game, Devil May Cry 4 is shaping up to be a solid follow-up to the previous games. The expansion of the game's scope is a good fit, although we'll admit to hoping for a bit more interactivity this time out, and the gameplay is comfortably tight. The new gameplay elements are cool and fit well into the game's **** Fans of the series will definitely want to keep an eye out for the game when it hits the PlayStation 3, PC, and Xbox 360 in the hopefully near future.

More exclusive DMC4 news

'Two Heroes. One Epic playtest. Why DMC on PS3 is the best yet'

The last time we saw Dante he wasa cocky teenager wearing an adsurb leather nipple strap. Now he's approaching 40, covered in stubble and a right evil bastard. "Dante's getting too powerful," DMC producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi told us. "Making him the main character would take all the challange out of the game." Wich explains the presence of Nero, the game's new protagist. He's got a serious beef with Dante after he spotted the red-coated swine killing one of his mates, a knight from an outfit known as the order of the sword, of which he's a member.

But of course, Dante's not that much of a rogue and there's obviously some underlying reason for him topping this lad, which will no dout become the game's main mystery. But the good news is, it's not all about Nero- wecan now confirm that Dante is totally playable, with his own missions and fighting style. More on that later. but just know that he's as much of a pleasure to control as he's always been, if not more so. But we have to admit that Nero is better then Dante.

Mainly because of his DevilBringer arm, which adds an extra dimension to the fighting. Not only are you mashing monsters up with a sword and pistol, but you're spinning the around your head with a ghostly demon arm. The gameplay is classic DMC- bar Nero's previously unseen Red Queen 'Accelerrator' sword attacks. The main difference is how incredibly vivid it looks in 108op. In one new playable scene, you use the Devilbringer to sail across huge crowds of puppet monsters who are laying siege to a  sleepy seaside town - with thousands of them writhing below you. It's the kind ofthing you'd never see on PS2, due to it's obvious technical inferiorty.

Other next- gen touches include reflections, hazy sunlight, rippling, reflective water and incredible character models. It looks a peach and it's only when you complete it with DMC3 that you realize just how much raw graphical power PS3 really packs.

Blast From The Past.

"Devil May Cry 4 is a mixture of the best bits of DMC1 and DMC3: Special Edition," director Hideaki Itsuno reveals. "In terms of difficulty it's a nearer to DMC3:SE." Sothat means a challange, but - hopefully  - an accessible one that series' newcomers can handle. From what weplayed, though it seemed just as hard as the original DMC3, rewarding patience and perseverance. but it's probaly the best Devil May Cry game yet, with gameplay so polished, solid and responsivem it shames games like Genji: Days of the Blade.

Familiar elements like the fixed camera angles and clear enemies to proceed level structure feel a bit 'last generation', but this is far from a bet- hedging re-hash. We played two levels - a sun bleached seaside town inspired by European medievil architecture ("We want you to feel like Death", reveals Itsuno-san )and a snowy mountain that appeared behind Dante in the E3 2005 trailer. The contrast between the two is stark with level specific enemies like the Frost down there and unique puzzles. We also got to scrap fiery boss Berias. DMC4 is going to be amazing.

The Frost . ! ( for the noobs of DMC )

New enemies the Frost attack Nero in packs in this winter level, complete with enormous gothic cathedral and vast snow- capped mountains. They can recharge their health by freezing themselves, so the battle can be hard  fought if you drag your heels. It's all about timing, pace and rivving up Nero's sword ( Using the Accelerator technique )until spewing flames and steam.

The Nero Vergil theory....

Is Nero Vergil from DMC3 ?

With his white hair and cocky one liners Nero has to be a son of Sparda, right ? Specificlly, Vergil, Dante's bother from DMC3. First of all; His taunts. Nero's put-downs are identical to Vergil's ("Scum"), as is the select action button where he slides his thumb across his neck as a way of telling enemies that he's about to slice them up. More evidence: In DMC3 Dante and Vergil were young. Vergil challanged Mundus ( the evil demon who sparda defeated 2000 years ago, but returned in DMC1 to kill Dante )and lost, becoming the mind-wiped Nero Angelo. Now the popular theory based on this is that the moment Mundus defeated Vergil, he became a 'full' demon and his humanity was cast away. The Order of the sword discoverd the orphaned child and raised him. As for the Devilbringer - when Dante beat Nero Angelo, the demon part of Vergil tried to return to its original host, but could only attach itself as the demon arm. See it all makes perfect sence.

Bosses name revealed !

This fiery demon is Birias. He's covered in flame and very, very angry, but that doesn't stop Nero from making a bad joke about how he 'doesn't tan' and calling him out for a fight. It's a fairly traditional DMC- Style boss battle, although the arena is much more open, and full of sheds that shatter into pieces whenever Berias stamps on them. The amount of detail in Berias' character model, and the lightling and shadows cast from the flames surrounding him, are stunning.

Nero VS Dante !

Some of Nero's moves

Grim grip

This lets Nero stretch out his arm like a bendy one out of the fantastic four. ou can use this to chuck enemies around, but it's a main use in reaching distant objects like red orbs.

Flyover

While Dante is stuck to the ground - excluding where he regularly darts up sides of buildings- Nero can use Grim Grip to pull himself across canverous gaps. You can only do this at set points, mind. Look for blue markings.

Devil Bringer

Not only does this continue the fine Capcom tradition of 'arms that do odd stuff ( God hand, Onimusha), but happens to be one of the most interesting things in the game. It gives Nero an extra edge over Dante in combat.

The Red Queen

Nero's sword is better than Dante's because it has  a motocycle rev in the handle. If you press R2 in time with your attacks he revs until it glows red, which unleashes nasty flame attacks that get steadily more damaging, so as long as you keep your rhythm.

Some of Dante's moves.

Force Edge.

Dante's DMC3 fighting styles - Gunslinger, Swordmaster, royal Guard and Trickster can all be switched between in real time by pressing the D-pad in the correspnding direction. You can even do this mid-combo in exchange for loads of delicious style points.

Ebony & Ivory

Dante's faithful monochrome sidearms Ebony & Ivory return, and as ever they come with unlimited ammo. They also have a supernateral fire rate which lets you juggle enmies. But other than that they're unchanged.

High Roller

To keep combos going, you have to hike enemies up into the air. This'll be familiar  to DMC veterans and you can juggle a foe about by rapidly firing your pistols. Essential for flashy combos.

Riding Shotgun

If you've had your fill of Ebony & Ivory then ditch them both for something meatier, like this sawn off shotgun. If you equip it and use the gunslinger fighting stlye, then Dante will perform an amazing flurry of death, using the, like fierry nunchucks.

Capcom responds to fans' rage
Exec makes statement on the official forums after PS3 fans send petition slamming the decision to take Devil May Cry 4 multiplatform.

Last week, Capcom joined the latest in a string of announcements from various companies when it said that one of its upcoming games, Devil May Cry 4, would now be going multiplatform.

Devil May Cry 4 is set to be the latest in a growing list of games which will be appearing on both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, after being previously slated as format-exclusive to one or the other.

The result of its announcement may well have taken Capcom by surprise. PlayStation fans chose to hit out at the Osaka, Japan-based company, which has produced such games as Okami, Viewtiful Joe, and the Resident Evil and Breath of Fire franchises. The fans even went as far as setting up an online petition, stating that "the undersigned" would boycott Capcom's products unless it reversed its decision and kept the game exclusive to the PS3.

In response to a thread on the official Capcom forums titled "What are you thinking, Capcom?" the company's senior director of strategic planning and research, Christian Svensson, said, "We are certainly moved that people are so passionate about our products that they would go to such extremes."

He continued, "At the same time we feel that allowing more people access to our content pleases far more people than it displeases (after all, we're not denying DMC4 to anyone that was already going to get it). It really is the best decision for the company and for consumers." He later locked the thread, stating that it had "run its course, gone off course, rolled down a cliff, hit a cow, and then exploded."

The full petition, available on the Petition Online Web site, reads, "To: Capcom, We (The people that have signed this petition) feel very left out in your decision to make Devil May Cry 4 a Multi-Platform title, and hereby agree to boycott your sale of Capcom affiliated games. This is due to your decision to turn your back on your most faithful gaming company. For years we have enjoyed games, we have reaped the benefits of your committment [sic] to Sony. We find it absolutely demoralizing for not only the gamers, but also Sony itself. We want you to know that will not, and should not stand for your actions, and therefore withold [sic] our option of buying your product."

The petition had, as of press time, received a total of more than 7,500 signatures. Though with samples including, "This petition is retarded," "This is the stupidest thing I've ever seen," and "I got a big ****," it's hard to gauge how accurate a judge of outrage it is.

Like Dante, she also shares demonic powers and is also holds the ability to transform into a devil trigger state, but unlike Dante, she prefers to use throwing daggers as her weapon of choice rather then firearms.

It is Lucia who originally asks Dante to journey to the island and give his assistance.

Alastor is also a quasi-sentient sword in Devil May Cry, and a winged demon in Viewtiful Joe; both are games created by Capcom. His first appearance in Devil May Cry is a scene where the sword moves on its own, stabbing the protagonist through the chest. In the game, Alastor has his own will, but is overpowered by Dante, and becomes his primary weapon for most of the game; the spirit of Alastor also remains to warn Dante of impending danger via an electric surge through the blade.

In Viewtiful Joe, he serves as a boss in the game, and also as an unlockable playable character. He has, just like Dante, a Devil Trigger form, and is very reminiscent of Devil May Cry in the way he plays. In the PlayStation 2 version of Viewtiful Joe, Dante is a playable character, and the conversation when Dante meets the character Alastor suggests that Alastor is the spirit of Dante's sword, somehow brought to life.
