Saiyuki ( 2000-04-04 to 2001-03-27 )
The basic structure of Saiyuki reminded me a lot of Wolf's Rain. Both had four characters with different personalities traveling together to find Shangri-La in Saiyuki where as in Wolf's Rain the four characters were looking for Paradise. Wolf's Rain had a much darker atmosphere where in Saiyuki everything seemed colorful. Even though Saiyuki is very colourful it didn't look crisp instead they looked muddy and sometimes in a fast fight scene the animation looked really texture less.
The majority of the background music sounded so cheesy and dated. The first opening song was again cheesy, but some reason I liked it. Didn't like the first closing song or the second opening, but loved the second closing. Overall the voices sounded good, voices matched the physical appearance of the characters nicely.
The story was basically a group of four (a priest and three demons) traveling to the west to destroy Gyumao. You would think they would be able to pull this off in 50 episodes, instead it ended half was through. I really tried to like Saiyuki but the cheesy background music really ruined the atmosphere and the only time I really enjoyed it was when it wasn't serious. Up next Saiyuki Reload.
Animation: 7/10
Sound: 7/10
Story: 6/10
Enjoyment: 6.5/10
