Report: US Advent Children in 2006

Web site says Final Fantasy VII movie may get US DVD release before the end of year.

To say that Final Fantasy fans are hardcore may be a bit of an understatement. Square Enix's role-playing franchise has kept its legions of fans enraptured in its complex plotlines since the series debuted in 1987. The problem is that the stories are sometimes interrupted by gameplay. Fans who would rather not replenish their mana or wait for their turn to attack were pleased to hear of Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, a movie set in the universe of one of the most popular Final Fantasy games.

The final cut of the movie made its way into theaters...in Venice, Italy, as part of the Venice Film Festival. Then the public got a look at the movie...in Japan. Both a DVD and a UMD were eventually released in Japan, leaving American FF fans watching imported versions and flipping furiously through Japanese-to-English dictionaries.

Final Fantasy aficionados on this side of the pond may finally get their chance to see Advent Children. On the DVD site The Digital Bits, a post states that Sony is trying to get the film released on DVD before the end of 2006.

According to the author, "It's taking a little extra time to work with the director to get all the supplemental elements finished, but the title is on track for release sometime later this year." Mike Stradford, an executive at Sony's DVD division, is cited as the source of information.

Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children has sold hundreds of thousands of copies in Japan on both DVD and UMD. For more information on the film, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

Is it really so much of an issue to just do english voice-overs?

I mean, they can even avoid redoing the mouth movements, I wouldn't care.

This has been delayed too long.

Hmmm...extra content eh? Sounds like it could be a trailer for the much rumored FF VII 2. If not, that extra content better be worth the friggin' hold up. Maybe they are having trouble getting the voice actors from 'Spirits within' to agree to voice the movie. (Speculative?)

honestly i think the end of the year is too late, anyone who has heard of it has probably seen it, by the time it comes out their will be very little interest in it and it will be dismissed. Only hardcore fans such as myself =P will buy it.

I actually really enjoyed this movie, but its target audience obviously knows how to get a hold of it even if it isn't released in the US. Square better get moving before everyone sees it by alternative means.

I've been seeing commercials for the U.S. versions of the DVD and UMD in my magazines lately. Why would they print them this early if they're not planning on releasing it till the end of the year?

YAY!, actaully it was origionally suppose to come out like in a month or so..cause DVDasian.com was taking orders for the Sony region 1 DTS version....then all off a sudden it dropped off the face of the earth and became not avaiable, know i know why LOL...

Hopefully the DVD release will have some extra cool stuff and come at a fair price...LOL

Yeah this a major misstep for Square. I've seen this movie so many times I know it by heart . I'm an animator and SquareEnix is the reason I chose this profession. The only way you can hate this movie is if you hate animation as genre. This movie destroys most anime that people talk about. If you're a fan of the series it's impossible for you to not like this movie

Flop? Its to late for a flop you jackasses it already has 1 million plus sales in Japan, and because Square isn't likely to do a major theatrical release it'l be awfully hard for them to lose any major $ on the NA release. IT IS THE GREATEST ACTION MOVIE OF ALL TIME AND THERE ARE ENOUGH HARDCORE FF7 FANS WHO WILL BUY THIS TO ENSURE IT MAKES MONEY!!!

Bad move. It's gonna flop like FF:Spirits Within (sale-wise that is). They should've sticked to DVDs and UMDs

I don't really care, since I'm not a huge huge fan of FF games, but I have a friend who has been waiting to get this movie since it was first announced so I know he'll be glad.

ive watched the film when it first come out in japan months ago just added the english subs, don`t see why it should take ths long just to get the english language added? it`s not as good once you`ve watched it once....should have world wide release same time.

Sorry, I can't stand watching movies in subtitles. I'm gonna wait it out. I got Kingdom hearts 2 in march, Legend of Zelda: Twlight Princess in the summer, and Final Fantasy XI(Xbox 360) in May to tide me over until it comes out. Plus, I thought Final Fantasy VII was overhyped so...

An overrated film sequel of a great game. Big Japanese fan of FFVII here (though still feel the western people have too much of a fanboyish attachment in general to this game). It's okay but why so much hype.

  • Kravyn81

On sale in the US this December 31st, 2006 @ 11:59:00 PM EST.

Another reason why I want to move to Japan. It sucks here.

how come this movie is so hyped? its not even a game! good thing i didnt get a PSP.

  • Demaar

    Posted Feb 1, 2006 7:50 pm PT

I wouldn't say this movie is like an FF game with the gameplay cut out, more like an FF game where it plays itself.
There's minimal story and a LOT of fight scenes with (obviously) no interaction from the viewer. Yeah, it's cool to watch, but not worth a "replay" like an FF game is. I suggest renting it when/if it's available at Blockbuster/whereever.
