I've noticed in the past few weeks that the fan on my HD 4850 all of a sudden seems to have a mind of its own. I know it's probably supposed to dynamically adjust fan speed according to load, but recently it revs up really high. I first noticed this when playing OF : DR since the fan would sound like it was running at 90% the whole time. Now it's also doing it in WoW, which I know is NOT graphically intense. I don't remember it always being like this. Is there a setting where you can lock fan speed, maybe in CCC? It is just really distracting with how loud the fan can become.

You can control the fan speed manually in CCC by unlocking ati overdrive then setting the fan speed by percent. I keep mine around 55% or so.

    Everybody gets one.

I have "Enable Manual Fan Control" checked and set to 50%, but it still revs up in games. I'm not sure what is going on.

Edit: It seems like it has something to do with big draw distances. Not sure though.

Games use more power and therefore generate more heat so the fan needs to work harder to keep it cool..?

Thing is it didn't use to do this. Maybe new drivers caused it? Although I haven't updated those in a while. My point is that this is a recent development that I cannot explain. I haven't changed any hardware, I haven't changed any settings, nothing has changed. I just want a way to lock the fan speed so I can keep it quiet, and the option in CCC isn't doing that.

no the revving up happened to my 9800gtx+ before and it was because i overclocked it too high and it kept overheating so the fan would go up when the clocks went to its max

CPU: Phenom II 940 ---------------------------GPU: Gigabyte 4870x2 2gb
RAM: OCZ 4GB SLI 800mhz --------------------PSU: OCZ STEALTHXTREME 700W
HDD: HITACHI 1tb 16mb csche 7200rpm ------MB: MSI K9N2 SLI PLATINUM
CHASSIS: NZXT GUARDIAN 921 Case ----------OS: Vista 64-bit ultimate

add me on steam: iliatay (-SoReal+) invite for mw2

Did you check for dust in the heatsink assembly?

I have yet to test it on games yet, but the card (and the inside of my case in general) had quite a bit of dust in it. It just happened to be right on the perimeter of the fan, sucked up against the vents. A perfect little lint wall that was no doubt screwing with airflow. I don't know if this will fix the problem yet, but it certainly couldn't help. Sometimes I just over think these things, and I appreciate the reminder of the simple solution
