Ok, so Bioware has been generating a lot of hype for this game by calling it a successor to Baldur's Gate. Problem is that in truth, its not. Not even close.

Dragon Age shares nothing in common with the Baldur's Gate series, other then the obvious "swords and sorcery" type world. Take a look at the many gameplay videos out there, or the quicklook over at Giantbomb. The game is layed out pretty well in that video for what it actually is.

Dragon Age is a carbon copy of Neverwinter Nights, with a dumbed down in-house ruleset, no online, no multiplayer player created modules, no player created modules at all on the console versions, no DM client, and vastly inferior character creation/building options. In a nut shell it is Neverwinter Nights without any of the stuff that made Neverwinter Nights a good game.

Bioware without Black Isle, a standard ruleset, or an established universe to work with has been hit and miss, and very predictable. Look at Jade Empire and Mass Effect. Both games featured a drawn-out story, but a story that was so cliche and run of the mill you could almost quote what was going to happen next without the need to play the games. They also used very simple rulesets that could be easily exploited and combat geared to keep people with short attention spans occupied.

Will the game be a success from a sales veiwpoint? Most Likely. Will it be reviewed well? Barring technical issues (of which there appear to be none) it should score fairly high, being the lack of serious roleplaying options. Is it a step forward for Bioware or CRPG's in general? No, not at all. It's a retrograde to be honest. Putting a game like this on the market and hailing the Baldur's Gate name is a way to sell copys and get middle of the road gamers to play your game.

Maybe this is Bioware's best effort without Black Isle, or maybe this is as creative with rulesets, character building, and combat as they can be without an superior and established framework to work in. Maybe Bioware is purposely rehashing old material and "dumbing down" the game to add to the bottom line. In any event, I suspect a lot of the old school players will be sorely dissapointed in Dragon Age, while newer players may embrace it.

In any instance, this is not a game I plan to purchase. I already have a much superior version, with much more content, replayablity, and an almost endless supply of online, high quality, diverse, player made adventures. That game is called Neverwinter Nights.

I was excited as hell for it until I read that there would be no multiplayer. Now I'm probably going to wait for it to go down in price on PC to pick it up.

    Q9400 - 4GB Corsair Dominator - EVGA 896 MB GTX 260 - Corsair TX650W PSU - Thermaltake Shark Tower - 1TB HDD - T220 22" WS Monitor - Windows XP - Logitech G9 & G11

    - Sony Bravia 32" 1080p - PS3: Demon's Souls - 360: Red-Ringed (POS) Not buying another

I think this looks to be the worst bioware game ever made. Yes, even worse than sonic rpg. The dialogue is terrible, the art is probably the worst this gen, almost everything about this game screams below average WRPG. I'm surprised to say that without KOTOR, and Baulder Gate series bioware reputation is entirely unwarranted in teh gaming community. I found bethsesda, even square enix to be wildly more consistent in terms of story than bioware.

Well, I personally loved Mass Effect, so I'm holding on to hope that Dragon Age Origins is going to be great, but everything I've seen of it so far just looks really dull.

I thought Mass Effect was a thinly veiled adventure/shooter pretending to be a RPG and it was a boring snooze of a game. I'm going to be very cautious with Dragon Origins. I'll rent it first.

I see what your saying, but in this day and age Dragon Age is about as close as your ever going to get to Baldur's Gate, there just isin't a market for such a game outside of the PC imo. I can see alot of people buying Dragon Age and not liking it, the way they've marketed itdoesn't help either.

In all honesty i think Alpha Protocol will be better simply because of its setting, and The Witcher 2 will be better than both.

To be fair, KotOR was Neverwinter Knights with the Star Wars setting imposed over Forgotten Realms. It even used a modified version of the Dungeons and Dragons 3rd edition ruleset. Beleive it or not, when you were playing KotOR, you were actually playing Dungeons & Dragons.

KotOR also lacked the great online, player adventure, and module features of Neverwinter Nights, but made up for it by offering a fantastic single player experiance set in the always appealing Star Wars universe.

There's nothing in the game that makes me want to get it. Anytime I look at it I get the feeling that it's something very uninspiring as a whole.

It looks challenging and fun like the PC RPG's that devs used to make. I don't care about the specifics to moan about this or that feature. All I know is that it looks good enough to deserve my gaming dollar.

Playing: Dragon Age: Origins, Risen, Tekken 6, Borderlands, FM3, Torchlight, GTA IV: TBOGT, Uncharted 2, WWE SVR 2010, Sacred 2: Fallen Angel, Bayonetta, Demon's Souls, R&C: ACIT, NSMB Wii, ACII, L4D2, LBP PSP, Stoked: Big Air Edition, The Saboteur

    RIP Brittany Murphy

While I havn't really liked very much any Bioware game since BG2 except maybe NWN expansions (that includes NWN, KOTOr, JE and ME --- all of which showed a downward spiral in terms of quality for Bioware), I am still looking forward it for making a party and going through a fun challenging battles. I haven't seen any reason to make me think it isn't going to be like this. So, I would say one of the most important part of BG 2 is still there, the character customization part ... I don't know much about that so cannot comment. Also PC will be getting a toolset with a level editor and area editor, etc so we can see user created modules

edit : The only game closes to BG 2 or Planescape torment in quality would be NWN 2 : Mask Of Betrayer (not on length unfortunately)

So, if Dragon Age isn't the spiritual succesor to Baldur's Gate because it doesn't share the same mechanics, then Fallout 3 isn't the sequel to Fallout 2.

Does the Xbox 360 really have more sales, or are they beating the PS3 because so many people have to buy two or more systems? Think about it
