I've been playing Starcraft off and on since its release and I rarely get to win a game. The enemy always attacks specifically where I don't have defenses or always manages to counter what I have. I'm not extremely slow or anything. I keep up perfectly but my opponent seem to always get the edge. When I do win it's always against an opponent who sucks so bad that it isn't even a satisfying win. I keep fighting random people on B.net and every single one beats me. I mostly play 2v2 Lost Temple or 3v3 Big Game Hunters. How do you get good at this game?

Just learn from your mistakes really, or have a look at some strategy FAQs for tips. But like most games, the only way to get good, is to keep playing; even if you do lose at times.

well honestly starcraft 1 online i dont really like to play anymore just due to hackers but really you have to really just produce units as fast as you can...ive seen people who just make 3 buildings a nexus a gateway for dragoons and the cybornetics bay or w/e and he just made a ton of dragoons and won really fast..

if you want to have a good defense try being a zerg and getting a spawning pool up asap and making zerglings then find your enemy asap you can makeabout 4-6 zerglings before the other team can make one if you find them fast enough

I got own3d so bad in the beginning. Now I can hold my own (which translates to, I don't lose as badly ).

Excited For: Starcraft 2, Diablo 3, Episode 3, Mass Effect 2, Battlefield 3, Chaos Rising

Starcraft IS hard. As are all RTS games. There is just so much to keep track of and manage. I would start off slow.

If you want to get better, follow these principles.

    1. Harvest as much resources as you can.

    2. Spend those resources as fast as you can (don't horde minerals and try to stay below 1000 of each resource)

    3. Scout early (start with a gatherer) and scout often.

Doing 3 while keeping up with 1 and 2 takes a fair amount of multitasking, but this should put you on the right track.

Save your replays, then examine how the enemy player plays.

Even though many players are hackers on B.net, many of those hackers are very unskilled (the reason why they started hacking in the first place) and are rather easy to kill.

Work on speed. And don't focus too much on resources. Learn about early rush tactics such as 4 pool for Zerg, or micro with Marines + Medics. For Protoss, Zealots and Two Dragoons early in the game are pretty hard to defeat.

If you are continuously being pummeled, that means that you are not being offensive enough. I don't really like players who plug up their bases because in my long time of playing, I've noticed that those people usually lose/die first in a match. Be aggressive, because being defensive won't win you the match. After all, the best defense is a good offense. And when you perform your attacks, diversify and use tactics, such as surprise attacks, air drops, etc etc. Also, never ever stop your assault unless you must. Many players thrust only one attack then have a massive cooldown, which is sufficient enough for a counter attack and which can easily make you lose. While you are attacking, keep building units. It isn't a very common thing to do and albeit very difficult, but it can mean the difference between a win or a loss.

If you want a easy race to play, it would probably be Zerg. Zerg is cheap and are excellent at recon, so that'll give you some time to understand how unit mechanics operate. Then when you feel ready, you can go on to Protoss and Terran.

If you can't win, just do what I did. I would always join a ladder game, and I would be terran. I would kill off all my SCVs and then the last one left I would send into the enemy base and just run around like a maniac causing minor damage to the enemies buildings. All the while, I would lift off my command center and put it somewhere my opponent wouldn't expect like in the corner of the map. Then I'd get some popcorn and watch tv while they spend forever scouting and building units. Usually about an hour into it they'd find me and blow up the command center and I'd lose.

My ladder record was pretty bad, but it was really fun.

On another note, do you notice your opponents always seem to know exactly where you are even without exploring much of the territory? If so, they might be cheating and you might as well just give up and play against the computer or play single player or play with people you know don't cheat.

    Piracy is bad... mmmkay

    Not cool man... not cool.

Atleast half my replays it seems are plagued with cheaters.

It would have been easier if 'hold position' was the default move order. I find it entirely too difficult to babysit my units who like to go running off at their slightest whim. I swear it's like "Ooooo pretty rock inside a heavily defended base. Let's go and look at it guys!"

Well, not only have a lot of the people on there been playing a long time, but there's a lot of jerks who use maphacks to cheat (or at least there used to be). I know this was the case years ago for a fact because when I would play 2 v 2 games with random teammates it was pretty common to get teammates saying they were using maphack.

Also, I don't think playing on Big Game Hunters is conducive to learning to play the game (on any "normal" map) well.

Woops, I meant "The Hunters". I don't play infinite-mineral maps.
