Upgrade Question - HDD related

    I've emailed this to sony but never recieved an answer so i'll try here:

    1- After putting in the new HDD how do i install the OS ? i have no disk / cannot find a downloadable image. Is the OS on the HDD or on some internal flash memory like BIOS for example o PCs

    2- are 7,2 K RPM or 10K RPM HDDs good / safe to use ? They can overheeat the system possibly.

    Not sure about the OS but as for 2nd question - you can use 7,2 K RPM but no 10K RPM. Most suitable is 5,4K though.

    yeah i dont know about the 2nd question either, but 5,400 RMP would be better for a HDD upgrade...

    The PS3 will install all necessary files for operation when you boot it up with the new HDD. As for HDD speeds, I would stick with a 5400. The miniscule gain in load times is not worth the extra heat produced.

    I had to download the PS3 2.76 firmware onto a USB drive.

    Then I put a new HDD into my PS3.

    It asked if I wanted to format and install the new firmware.

    About 20 minutes later, I had a brand new console with a 500 GB HDD.

    knicknut nailed it. The firmware updates increased to the point where the onboard memory is no longer adequate, so the PS3 uses part of the HDD to save the fw. You'll have to get the fw onto a USB stick, or flash memory card if you're PS3 supports them, and have it plugged into the PS3 in order to complete the HDD upgrade.

    2) A 5400 RPM HDD will be better for your system because it won't produce as much heat as the faster drives (sort of a trade-off). Unless you want to get a Solid-state HDD.
