Best Xbox Game

Despite how the Xbox 360 stole its thunder late this year, the original Xbox stood tall as a must-have game system all through 2004 thanks to its ever-growing library of quality games. And with games like our five finalists for Best Xbox Game of 2005, you can tell the Xbox still has a tremendous amount of potential. These games alone are reason enough to be a proud owner of the system, and it was no simple task to decide which among them was truly the best of the year.

While the concept of a first-person shooter going behind the back may sound a little strange at first, Unreal Championship 2 pulls it off with ease and, at the same time, provides a fantastic new twist on an old favorite.

And the winner is... Ninja Gaiden Black
Platform: Xbox
ESRB: Mature

We loved last year's Ninja Gaiden, and the fact that Ninja Gaiden Black is ultimately so similar to the previous game meant that we weren't as stunned by the new game's presentation as we were by last year's game. However, that Ninja Gaiden Black takes one of the all-time greatest action adventure games and pushes it so much closer to perfection that it completely blew us away. The small number of issues with the original--its inflexible difficulty and its occasionally awkward camera angles--are resolutely addressed in Ninja Gaiden Black, which also adds hours of pure, exciting action in the form of the new mission mode. It's that action and the limitless amount of challenge on offer that make Ninja Gaiden Black the best Xbox game of 2005.
