Hrmm....

User Rating: 7.3 | Otogi: Myth of Demons XBOX
Otogi is another one of those games that's gotten amazing reviews and yet I have no clue why. The game looks beautiful (inspired in fact) sounds terrific, and most importantly is fun... for the first hour. Eventually the game becomes so repetitive it plays out like Dynasty Warriors without all the people to kill. Here the short, followed in a bit by the long:

Gameplay: 6/10
Hack. Then Slash. Then Hack. Then Slash. Fly around a bit. Then repeat. I literally hit about 3 buttons (not in any combination mind you) for pretty much the entire game. Repeatedly.

Grahpics. 10/10
Wow. Not only do the graphics look great, they're just so inspired. I wish other games would take note and create such immersive and imaginative levels.

Sound: 10/10
The score is good, but it's the noise of battle that's so much fun. When you break a house, it really sounds like you're breaking a house. This game beat the shooter Black to the boom boom by almost 3 years.

Value: 6/10
Value? I beat it in well-under 10 hours (2 days) by using the same one button attack over and over again. You can replay levels but there isn't much reason to. I found no reason to go back and play it, especially since I nearly didn't complete it due to boredom.

Tilt: 7/10
One the one hand it's so pretty, on the other hand it's so dumb. Heh. Seriously the game is shiny but shallow, and ultimately that's why it's good but not great (and certainly not pedastool worthy like some people would have you believe).

This game is somewhat annoying because it's been touted as one of those games that's "so amazing but no one plays it." The game is beautiful and has so many fun things going for it but it devolves quickly into a one button pressing affair like dynasty warriors. The story is somewhat bizarre and may have been more engrossing had I lived around Japanese mythologies but it didn't really make a dent with me. More importantly though the game was short and absurdly easy. In fact get this, I kept using the same one-button combo to get throug the entire game. Once I got to the last boss I was having so much trouble so I went to the manual because I didn't understand why it wasn't dying. Right in the manual it gives you the ultimate death combo that will kill things and it adds something to the effect of "you must learn this combo or you will die early on often." I made it through the entire game without the "all important combo" so yeah, it was easy. Pretty though.
