So does everybody here basically watch the anime subbed or just read the manga?
Cause if I'm going to get into it, I want to get into it the "right" way

I've been doing both...though mostly the manga. You can find several seasons of the Funi dub/sub on Hulu, but they still don't have them all. If you want access to all the manga chapters for free...there are sites online you can look for, like Mangareader.

Just be aware...even if you read like 10 chapters a day, you're looking at like 2 months worth of reading....that's a LOT of One Piece. Heck, I just read from the Skypiea Arc to the Sabaody Arc a while back to get caught up to current...and that took me over a week of day-in, day-out reading. I loved every minute of it...but still.

Honestly, I'm more of a manga fan than an anime one in general, but One Piece is one of the few exception to that.

Don't get me wrong, the manga is as good/better than the best out there, but the one thing that anime has that manga doesn't, sound, One Piece just does it so well.

Besides the awesome music adding to the intensity of dramatic scenes, the voice acting is one thing I'd rather not miss, it's way too good in my opinion. Not to mention that many quirks in the character's accents/way of speaking can't be translated properly into English in the manga. Though I suppose that applies to all manga out there anyway.

Of course the correct answer would be do both, read the manga and watch the anime, but if you've yet to start with either, then you should pick one for now, since it's going to take you a long time to catch up to the current chapter/episode.

I personally have stopped reading the manga, to avoid spoilers for myself, makes the anime 100x more exciting this way, tbh.

**Spoilers for those haven't watched yesterday's episode**
And speaking of which, we finally see Luffy's ultimate move from Gigant Battle 2 in yesterday's episode \o/

Ok, I'm not sure which I'm going to do (probably anime cause I can watch it easily for free, and I don't like reading anime online)
But, you're talking about episodes being released? Is this on tv?

Not TV, no. There are many online sites that upload weekly episodes of most anime shows after they get subbed by fansub groups.

I'm not sure if we're allowed to post links to anime sites here, but a good one I frequent is Animeshippuuden.

Subbed One Piece episodes are released every Sat/Sun (depends on your timezone), I think the originals are released every Tue in Japan.

If you're looking for dubbed ones, they're not up to date with the current episodes, just around a third, in fact.

38 million is a lot until you think about how it sold. One Piece got a bunch of new fans a couple years ago (due to the timeskip and one of the movies), if all of them start buying up the previous volumes (which there is a lot of) that's going to be a lot of sales.

One Piece was the top manga in Japan even before the timeskip...It probably would've been more popular in the US if 4kids never released that atrocious dub.

i must agree with you... that 4kids mess... i dare not even call it a dub...i must say it is unfourtunate...that is how i found out about one piece... but then i found glorious funimation and i learned just how bad 4kids and then i found out how much my friends enjoyed one piece and i finally found subbed versions which was just a tick better than funimations dub but yeah i believe it was way popular before the timeskip

*Really* wish that edit button could appear for me sometime in this lifetime. Made a horrible typo (extremely tired) and couldn't edit it.

I used to read Bleach and Naruto but at some point they both just got boring and I didn't care anymore.

One Piece has always kept my attention however and I eagerly wait for the new episodes/chapters every week. This is something Bleach and Naruto have never been able to do.

I can honestly say that somewhere deep down I wish One Piece would never end.

    this...
but ive long since ditched bleach and naruto haha and filled both of their places with fairy tail

If you live in NA, Funimation offer almost instantaneous, legal subbed episodes from their website. If you live elsewhere, then you'll have to look elsewhere. The One Piece anime is famous for having no fillers. However the price of this is that the Anime travels along at a snails pace so it doesnt overtake the Manga's plot.

    but OP does have filler
  • Oct 1, 2012 7:58 pm GMT
There were fillers up to the end of Skypia arc, However there have not been fillers since. All that has been shown was in the Manga.

Hey, I've got a question, and I suppose it's a major spoiler, but
Did Luffy ever get to the Grand Line and find that awesome treasure?

Timeskip is only halfway through the plot so no he's still far far away from getting there.

He's been in the Grand Line since like 1998. I hate when people ask this.

I'm always a little stunned every time someone else gets "surprised" by the fact that media related to Jump's "Big 3" (One Piece/Naruto/Bleach) are popular.

    I mean... really? Come on.

Wasn't the Bleach manga cancelled or some such because it lost a chunk of popularity? (as in, it's back to being printed in Shonen Jump only, instead of being sold in it's own book)

Anime was canceled cause no one wanted to watch filler.

    This.

YES lol I never saw Bleach. Only the miscellaneous episodes i catch on Adult Swim/Toonami. But i did a little research back in january... It's insulting. It has 4 seasons of fillers. Thats 4 seasons of stuff that never "happened" in the cannon. And if im not mistaken 3 are back to back to back.

the only fighting manga that is as beloved as One Piece, besides Dragonball, is JoJo, and that has the advantage of being nearly 2 decades older.

I am completely surprised. Dragonball's true successor? That's pretty big talk.

Toriyama himself holds this opinion of One Piece. I can only assume Oda nearly fainted from a fangasm.
