More games should have artistic graphics like this.

Of all the 3D games that I've played, this one has, by far, the best visuals. Unlike other games that focus on making things more realistic, this game focuses on presenting a specific artistic style (a style that mirrors ancient Japanese paintings). I'm surprised that more games don't go this direction because 3D graphics that focus on realism just didn't leave any distinct and deep impressions like Okami did. Even GTA IV didn't look as impressive as this (maybe it's because we're so used to looking at the real environment).

The gameplay is quite innovative. You have the normal running around and attacking, but you can also draw on the screen using a divine brush. Drawing at first, but easy once I got the hang of it. I think Okami could have been better as a PC or DS game because it's easier to draw complicated shapes using a stylus or mouse.

As others have mentioned, the main shortcoming with Okami is that it's way too easy. You'd have to be the worst player in the world to lose in this game. Drowning, falling off cliffs, etc only takes away one LP, you can even beat some bosses by spamming store-bought attack items, and healing items are everywhere.

The pacing of the story could also use some work. After defeating Orachi with Susano, the story loses direction as you wander around aimlessly. Then, everything gets confusing as you travel back in time and your past self comes to the future (what was the point of that?). At the end, a whole bunch of story elements like Celestials, Moon Tribe, aliens, etc. gets thrown into the story with no explanations or development. I think the alien elements ruined the coherence of the story; controlling everything from the sun to the wind didn't mix well with space ships.

Overall, Okami is a must play for everyone. Don't dismiss this game because of the unimpressive cover art. You'll definitely enjoy the memorable artistic graphics and innovative gameplay.
