Super Cool Samurai

User Rating: 9 | No More Heroes WII
Supervillans and their world can I found can sometimes be more interesting than the superheroes, "No More Heroes" gives you the opportunity to be in their shoes. This game is one of the best beat-em ups I've played in a long time, and this is a genere not tackled enough.

The story I think is good, it's a simple crime story plot of you playing an up and coming supervillian. I even liked the characters, Travis is an modern day samurai whom is cocky, arrogant, is an otaku seem to by a fan of an anime series which looks similar to "Pritty Soilder Sailor Moon", as well as a wrestling fan with his collection of masks, trading cards but most of all the wresting moves with it which I'll get to latter. He is fun, wisecracking, has a sense of honor and compasion (though thats shown only a little) though his only flaw is he's kinda a failed romantic, he can woo women but then blow it due to falling into perversion for a moement and might have some addiction to porn from the videos I heard he failed to turn back in. And I like the employer charcter forgot her name, but she's hot, mysterious, has a dry, black and strange sense of humor, a bit ruthless but not completely, and shes a bit cold in a good or bad way.

The control is solid it really has the best use of sensory technology. You have a good combo system where you are able to execute kills in anyway. Though one of my favorates is using all kinds of wrestling moves which is very useful because it can take a lot of you opponent's energy and you are able to execute clean kills without losing most of your enegy from you sword, but most of all just plain cool doing those moves.

The sound effects I think are very good, I like how experemental they were by incorporating 8 bit effects in some places just to add to both add to the sureal atmosphere to the game but just to give it a sense of fun and humor. And that's another thing about the game the game, I wouldn't say so much it has comidy but more a sense of humor it's doesn't take itself too seriously.

I love the graphic the creators have utilized the same artstyle like with their eariler game the cult classic "Killer 7" it's sort of a French style art I can't remember the name of it but I think it looks fantastic. It gives the game a colorful surreal atmosphere, but most of all feel like I'm playing thorough a graphic novel.

Which really helps the violence in this game, and this game is pritty gory but not the kind where it's disgusting and explicit but more like has sort of a strange beauty to it, it's almost similar toward Frank Miller's graphic novel series/movie "Sin City". Heads get decapitated, bodies cut in half or explode if stabed and the end result is always blood coming out like Yellowstone Park's guysers it's just crazy. I love the fact your weapon is a light saber and we actually see in more graphic detail the concequences of that weapon where in most sci-fi's films their always clean bloodless kills.

And the best part of all about the game are the boss battles, I really love how each of them are designed and different their all practically comic book supervillains. Even their gangs are colorful almost like the gangs in the film "The Warrirors" each is based on a certain specialty. My favorate boss is number 6 whom I think is kinda cute.

And the game has a bit on an RPG element which gives you plenty to do to keep you busy like sidequests to earn you some extra cash to purchase some items you might need in order to make your chracter a step ahead of the game.

I have only some minor complants about the game that prevent me from giving it a higher score. One the cinamatography is a bit cumbersome sometimes, it's not broken but it could be smoother. In the assisin killing mission the enviorment I feel lacks a bit of variety, I know that enviorments aren't really that big of a thing in beat em ups but I always found they helped make a battle more interesting I always like it when the enviorment changes it just gives me a feeling I'm going somewhere. I'm not saying the enviorments are bad don't get me wrong they are intersting but there could be more to it. And final complant is the game just felt kinda short for me, but since there will be an upcoming sequel which I hope is good I can't hold that complant against the game.

"No More Heroes" makes the cut.
