It's not what's on the outside, but the inside that counts (and thank God, because Nier is one ugly Bastard) :P

User Rating: 7.5 | NIER PS3
Nier is really not what you might expect at first glance. True, reviews have been mixed with the Japan review sites rating it far higher than the US ones. I can only guess this is a result of reviewers rushing through part of the game without taking the time to really dig deeply into the games redeeming qualities.

So what does Nier have going for it? Well for starters its soundtrack is SUPERB, not to mention the atmosphere of the game complements the general overtones represented by the games unique and compelling musical score. True it is at its core your typical action RPG, with little in the way of innovation (aside from some minor alterations on your traditional crafting/skill systems and some unique takes on the whole post apocalyptic angle). Nier is the kind of game that appeals to someone with an open mind and an appreciation for the subtle unique nuances so common in games like, Galarians and Phantom Dust. I personal found an appreciation for the open world (ala Zelda) and the unique (if disturbing) story. The graphics will grow on you if you can appreciate the art style and how it fits the theme/atmosphere presented in the game; however I will admit, it does look a bit dated (but what true gamer would ONLY play a game for the graphics?)

What are the games flaws? Well for starters the games combat system to me seems a bit flawed, no lock on option can make battles a bit tedious. The graphics as stated above are not the best (though also not the worst). The back tracking can get a bit old and sometimes objectives are not totally clear, though this is hardly game breaking. Finally, the mini quests are as many reviewers stated "fetch quests" without end.

Bottom line is, if you want a unique experience, with a great soundtrack, unique story and that "grow on you" appeal, give it a shot. It's certainly not for everyone, nor is it a truly great game. It is however an enjoyable memorable journey that is sure to appeal to those not holding it to a standard it was never meant to fit. Plus your as ugly as hell and the game features a scantily clad gender confused girl/man in a nighty…. How's that for a fist full of win :/
