Still waiting to be impressed by this game.

Yes, the graphics and sound are great, but the storyline and battle system are not.

***Spoiler***

I'm at the ivory tower about to fight the white witch, and I'm not engrossed at all.  Its one of those games where all I want to do is finish it just to boost my trophy count.

Ni no Kuni - a dream come true to be able to finally explore the world of Studio Ghibli! For so long, I desire a game that gives me the feel of what Studio Ghibli does with their films. The closes I got was with games like Ico and Shadow of the Colossus. Now, Ni no Kuni, it is 100% Studio Ghibli! Hats off the Level 5 and of course, Studio Ghibli for making this game and ultimately, my dream come true.

I'm glad that actual film directors are beginning to see the potential in the gaming world. I can only imagine a Wes Anderson directed game.

This game needed so many more Ghibli cutscenes. I often found myself watching an extended scene made in-engine and thinking "This would be so much better animated"

@ck10304 Totally agree, I keep wanting more and not really getting them.

@ck10304 I feel the same way. Everytime I see 2D animation start, I get excited.

I've seen most of the Studio Ghibli movies and they are amazing. Of course without Hayao Miyazaki's imput as director and screen writer they wouldn't be good. As soon as I knew Studio Ghibli was involved in making this game and was a jrpg I knew I would love it.

For the resemblance part, I also notice that some old and special characters have big round eyes. Notice the reward shop NPC in Ni no Kumi, and the mysterious old miner in Castle in the Sky. Brings back the memories.

Great studio, great game, great video and great website. Thank you Gamespot, you guys are awesome.

As a big fan of Studio Ghibli's work i really would like to play this game but namco-bandai seems to not like the xbox or pc that much. They didn't release demon souls on Xbox or PC but did with its "sequel". whats up with this company?

CWZaft
CWZaft

@JustinRiden Well first, Namco-Bandai didn't make Demon Souls, so there you go. Second, Namco-Bandai is a primarily Japanese game company, and Japanese games generally do not sell well on the PC or Xbox 360. Remember, video games are a business, and companies have to think about profits first and foremost.

JustinRiden
JustinRiden like.author.displayName 1 Like

@CWZaft

they produced demon souls and dark souls. meaning its up to them whether or not its released on other consoles. Also studio ghibli is well known and liked internationally. Game studios should base their console release based on how well the game should be received. Ni no Kuni obviously would earn more than enough money to justify the risk of developing it on pc and xbox.

Man you sure do your homework dont you. Thanks for clearing that stuff up. too bad though i really would like to play this game without having to get a console thats going to die soon.

I actually equated the King of Ding Dong Dell with The Cat King from "The Cat Returns"

For me, the cat Timmy Toldrum was obviously based on the catbus.

Am I the only one who notices him pronounced "Ghibli" wrong!   Seriously dude you are supposed to be a professional here.  If you aren't going to pronounce it right at lest let us know that you know you are pronouncing it wrong and apology for it.  The way you talk you act like you don't know what you are talking about (like your reading a script written by someone else).  O by the way you pronounced "Chihiro" name wrong as well.

AtheistPreacher

@mkdms14

I think part of the confusion is that the Italian word "ghibli" is pronounced with a hard "g," whereas when the studio took it as their name they began pronouncing it with a soft "g."  So either way you pronounce it is "wrong" in at least one sense.  That's why I find it hard to get worked up about that one.

HowlPendragon

@mkdms14 Yeah its noticeable but its nothing to get upset over. People pronounce them wrong all the time.

This video is pretty pointless, pointing out a bunch of similarities is hardly enlightening... I think anyone who is familiar with Studio Ghibli and their distinct animation style could identify the similarities.

The moment I saw a trailer for this game a few months back, it made me think it was entirely animated by SG, haha.

This game would be one of my last bunch of games that i'll buy for PS3.

Well i need to painting my gaming experience a bit i mean just how cute and vibrant ni no kuni is!

It's going to be my first JRPG!

PS4 has really put my PS3 game purchase to the complete halt...it will starts again next month with GOW Ascension and THIS GAME!

@Good-Smurf Yeah I'm with FireVixen, eff that. We still have God of War, Last of Us, Bioshock and others.

Once the PS4 is out PS3 games will be dirt cheap :p

"There is a plane in Porco Rosso, but wait, there's also a car in Ni no Kuni, right guys."  Not sure what the point of this video was, but I had my hopes up for some kind of insight from level 5 or ghibli.  Heck, I would  have taken an interview with their janitor.

The White Witch kind of reminded me of Grunwald from Little Norse Prince (which isn't strictly Ghibli I know but still it's close enough). Not entirely in appearance but more demeanour.

As for Tommy Toldrum fat cats are kind of a recurring Ghibli theme, particularly in Whispers of the Heart and then brought to a whole new level in it semi-follow up The Cat's Return.

I will get ni no kuni when it will be a little bit cheaper, and also hope that there will be another rpg later from Ghibli studio but with different combat system, 'cause I'm missing combat system from Grandia 2 and 3 and FFX, X-2)  Guess that I should just wait for Agnis philosophy and see what will be there.

Sohereiam
Sohereiam like.author.displayName 1 Like

@ROMSES Don't keep your hopes about Agnis Philosophy, knowing Square-Enix thy will take years to finish(see Versus XIII, which was planned at start of the PS3 era, and has yet to be finished, if it will be finished).

And yes I also do miss the combat system from games like Grandia, I loved calculating my tatics based on the turn bar.

GameYakuza

focusing on art style is certainly not  praise for ghibli... sadly the recent movies followed the same path, reusing art style and miyazaki acting as a director only, sometimes replacing another director at the last minute.

ROMSES
ROMSES

@GameYakuza Why not praise, do you know how hard it is to make a game with this art style, with time that was given for them - its just impressive that they finished it in time and havent made some stupid delays, maybe art is not good as mononokes or spirited away's but it's like another masterpiece from ghibli studio, or maybe I just don't understand you) And I guess Miyazaki is really busy with his new work ( Porco Rosso 2 is finished and The wind rises is in post production so i guess he has a lot of work to do)

GameYakuza
GameYakuza like.author.displayName 1 Like

@ROMSES you certainly didn't understand me, I meant there's more to ghibli than an art style (but ninokuni does look great). miyazaki is a great director, but they capitalized too much on their past successes recently. I hope these upcoming movies have the ghibli touch again.

From 4:02 onwards all I could think of is 'here comes the Kiki's Delivery Service reference, here comes the Kiki's Delivery Service reference...' Surprised Laputa didn't show up, sharing with Kuni a male child protagonist, and Porco barely got any mention at all- surely there was more connections with those two?

@brok There is actual phrase said in game "Castle in the sky", there are Laputa type robotic guardians of an ancient civilization and even Laputa type markings.

@brok We could have drawn many more parallels. Alas, eventually all good things must end.
