NHL 13 Review

By Brett Todd

NHL 13 adds some great new skating physics and smarter AI, although you've already seen a lot of what the game has to offer.

The Good

  • Realistic new physics add tremendous skating authenticity
  • Smart new player AI
  • Very challenging gameplay
  • Ambitious GM Connected mode has promise.

The Bad

  • Smart AI is sometimes too smart
  • Still some rating quirks.

NHL 13 might be the only game in town this year for hockey fans. The threat of an imminent lockout leaves the latest addition to the long-lived EA Sports franchise as the lone outlet for puckheads through what could be a long and lonely fall and winter of listening to talk about salary caps and revenue sharing instead of the more agreeable slap of stick against puck. Thankfully, neither Gary Bettman nor Donald Fehr is in the game, despite what EA Sports' famous tagline claims. But things are in a holding pattern here just as in the real NHL's labor negotiations. This is a bit of a stay-the-course release, although there are some impressive additions under the hood, such as a superb new skating physics engine and smarter artificial intelligence. Some issues with the AI and the lack of noteworthy new features are disappointing, however, making this something less than a revolutionary improvement over NHL 12.

With all that said, it can't be denied that NHL 13 is a great hockey game when taken strictly on its own merits. Realism is the cornerstone of just about everything that happens on the ice. Players skate, shoot, slash, and brawl just like they do in the real NHL. Playing positionally sound hockey is a necessity, as is some sort of understanding of the actual game and the ins and outs of the NHL. If you need to Google what a diamond is or have no idea that cycling here does not involve wearing really tight shorts, you might want to do some reading before picking up a gamepad. This looks like an arcade hockey game, but it plays a lot like a simulation when the puck is dropped.

Features and frills are so numerous that you expect the game disc to bulge out of the box. There are modes of play for every taste. You can play single games, tournaments, and full careers, with most options being available online and off. As in NHL 12, you can take over franchises, set yourself up as a GM, create a player to lead from the junior leagues to the big leagues, take over a legend and try to lead him (or her--two female stars have been included this year for the first time alongside male greats like Gretzky and, um, Roenick) to greatness again in today's NHL, and much more.

Hockey Ultimate Team is back for a second season of card-collecting, micropaymenty goodness, and a new GM Connected mode of play supports up to 750 people playing in online leagues in nearly every role imaginable, from front-office boss to first-string goalie. The new NHL Moments Live borrows a trick from Madden and puts you in historic situations. There you have to either live up to what legendary stars like Gretzky and Gilmour accomplished in classic contests or finish off games by mimicking the highlight reels.

Another tweak is with the ratings system, which has been revised to rate players on a universal scale by position. This removes the confusing system from last year, which scored players based on how good they were in their individual roles. This inflated the overall ratings of marginal players who were good performers in their jobs, most notably tough guys. This year, goons have been dialed back to sensible numbers. Still, the ratings are odd in spots and still skew high for the most part. Whoever handled the ratings played some favorites. There is no other way to explain the declining Alex Ovechkin clocking a 93 as the second-best player in the game.

Some players also get dinged unfairly. It's hard to believe that Phil Kessel wound up with a lousy 86 after his 82-point season, especially when the likes of Mike Richards scored 87 with just 44 points in arguably his worst regular season in the NHL (nice ending, though). Stars are a little too dominant in general and have been given ratings more by history or reputation than current performance. Ryan Getzlaf and more than a few others haven't been this good or this motivated in the real NHL in a few years. Still, most players in the game perform in a true-to-life fashion.

Depressingly, none of the new features in NHL 13 amount to much. Changes to the standard modes of play include such dull additions as the ability to demand a trade in Be a Pro and some supposedly revised AI in the trade logic in Be a GM. Those AI revisions were insufficient, though; you can still rook the opposition into absurd trades by loading up on quantity to get quality. Revamped player ratings clear up some confusion but are not stop-the-presses material. The two new female "legends"--Hayley Wickenheiser and Angela Ruggiero--add an interesting twist to Be a Legend, although they add little glitz to the already disappointing lineup of hockey stars.

The handful of other additions--Doug Gilmour, Jari Kurri, and Dominik Hasek--won't exactly light the world on fire either, and some of last year's heroes, such as Borje Salming, have been dropped. This whole concept needs a massive expansion, with full old-time teams. GM Connected looks promising, but also rather intimidating. The idea of being in a league with hundreds of other people could well offer an entirely new multiplayer experience. It will take quite some time before this ambitious mode can be deemed a success or a failure, though. There are some technical problems as well, because the game moves very slowly, even when moving between stat screens in leagues.

NHL Moments Live is pretty much DOA. Just a few historic moments are present, and they are marred by having to re-create history with mostly modern lineups. So when you try to stage Doug Gilmour's big 1993 OT goal against the St. Louis Blues, you do so with linemates like Phil Kessel, not Dave Andreychuk, and try to put the puck past Jaroslav Halak, not Curtis Joseph. That takes a lot of the fun out of everything. Most of the moments are from the 2011-2012 season, which was a pretty forgettable year for the NHL. Still, you would think that EA Sports could have come up with better game choices. Nobody wants to watch the Columbus Blue Jackets play the Ottawa Senators once, let alone replay this sort of sporting-world snoozefest over and over again.

I have played every ea sports nhl game and i hate this one. I have no problem with the skating. I actually like it. Just about everything else is crap. I have my Legend 2 online and a winning record in versus play. 450 hours played so I have seen alot. And alot of stupid shit happens. I nearly always dominate play widely out shooting my opponents, a ton of time on attack and I have a very balanced offence always getting my d in on the play. I shoot high I shoot low. I shoot side to side. I shoot in the slot, I shoot from the point through traffic. Sometimes I take a bad angle shot looking for a rebound. I try one timers from the point, I pass alot and usually have a high %. No matter what I try I cannot score. I lose to people that are inferior and I can tell dont know the game as well as I do. Never have I felt so good at a game yet lose so often. I always feel cheated. I work my ass off trying to get a goal and I'll get beat 1-0 only giving up say 8 shots against while I average about 20. The goalies on the ths game are garbage. Either they are to hard to score on or they give up some cheese goal sittin on there ass. I'm so sick of this games shit but I love hockey so much.

@burback2 thats what i meen man. i like to play on the hardest on gm mode and i outshoot almost every team 30-4 and seem to lose %60 of the games, most scores usally 3-1 2-1...then the odd game ill win like 8-1. usally out attack them 10 minutes to about their 2 minutes and lose like always. The goals they score make u wanna smash the joy stick also because its total cheese goals, flickers from just inside the blue line that beats ur goalie everytime while u totally dominate the computer. The trading is stupid as well on gm mode. its impossible to make a solid trades as most trades are just dumb. i tried to trade for a 1st round pick from anaheim and j.rosehill... i offered almost every player i had and computer wouldnt budge. a week later on that game, j.rosehill went on waivers and they offered me a 1st round trade for my worse player? how stupid is that.

NHL 13 is garbage! everything about the game...... the fighting is stupid and poor (awful angles and when u have a good fighting a 5-star player its just dumb), your own goalies are pylons but amazingly the computer goalie are too good and make the stupidest saves which gets annoying over time, the dekes are stupid, computers NEVER miss on breakaways, offensive defenceman are usless on this game, powerplays are stupid when players wont set up for one-timers are computers dont allow them too. players skate like mack-trucks, the worst penaltys always called,  computer always scores last minute on a bad awful goal everytime, you cant even get good shots off in the offensive zone without a player laying you out. Honestly playing on the hardest level during a 5 minute period  game, i outshot the team 39-4 and out played them by almost 15 minutes in zone attack but lost the game 3-1. this seriously gets old, i can understand a goalie standing on their head but every game is the same thing. my goalies have save percentages around %.720. its stupid. they score the worse goals and bounces which makes it dissapointing but you cant score no-where near the same style of goals.... infact the tick-tac-toe play on here is god awful as well! the ive taken houndreds of slapshots and shotside shots down the wing just like the computer has and rarely ever scored! but the same play from the computer 8-10 times will end up a goal! this game gets a 2 out of 10 only for the graphics.

In all sports games, the only mode that I care much about is Career, as I enjoy building up a player and even enjoy NOT being awesome right away. This is the one mode that hasn't received an update since the last game play update. For all EA games especially, it's an annual cash grab and they put as absolutely little into each game as humanly possible. There is no sense of pride in the work done at EA anymore.

This is why I still play NHL 11- too much invested in that game to start over for absolutely nothing. Roster updates? Doesn't matter with CPU trading anyway. The gameplay in Madden, NHL, Tiger Woods, (again, pretty much anything EA makes) hasn't altered in a decade. All they can be bothered to do is crap out some pointless niche minigame mode that will appeal to all of a dozen people.

People bash CoD for being more of the same every year, but at least it's nearly perfect for what it does. All the EA titles have been slipping, getting worse each year. Madden is so buggy that it's virtually broken in my opinion, and I simply quit the series at NFL 11.

Trading card games, obscure stars in modern teams, blah blah blah-- it's all smoke and mirrors to hide from the fact that most sports games come out each year with about a month worth of work done to them, and still sell millions of copies at full retail price.

The joke is on us.

@TheLamaKnows Madden was near perfect towards the end of the ps2 era. Next Gen Madden suffered for many installments. They have changed the next gen maddens completely 3 times or so. MLB the Show is near perfect(not EA i know)..but EA has nailed soccer and hockey IMO. It is not complicated for me..but i've played it enough to get used to it. I'm a socom fan from the ps2 era..i've seen socom change change change...how i wish socom was still socom..i'm jealous of the CoD fans that get the same ole CoD year after year.

@bottaboomstick @TheLamaKnows ea has totally ruined fifa soccer as i have all the fifa soccer games and nhl games since the beginning of the sega genisis days. infact soccer is god awful and i switched to pes evolution soccer 13 because fifa's little bots running around the field never made errors and got stupid how they where just perfect. Nhl games are getting too annoying too, its suppose to be a video game but even kids are finding it too hard non fun to even play. I hope someday they come out with mlb for the xbox because its honestly the best game ive ever played with my ps-vita. that mlb 2k baseball is garbage for the xbox.

@bottaboomstick @TheLamaKnows Oh for the most part I agree. At it's core, the NHL series is awesome. The problem is that it's utterly stagnant so buying the latest NHL is essentially buying updated rosters and stupid trading card games. EA could simply offer new rosters yearly as DLC, but why bother when people line up to buy the same game as last year at full price?
Madden in particular is crap. Even the core gameplay in that series has dropped to a level not much better than the original Sega versions. The voice commentary in every Madden for the past decade has become nothing less than pathetic and getting worse.
Lastly, EA is perhaps the worst offender of them all for money grubbing micro-transactions. That's pretty much the only new element added to any EA title for years- the ability to pay even more money to EA.
I just personally won't give EA anymore money for an identical game any more. I did that since the Sega days for sports franchise and in the past few years, it's all been wasted money.

This game sucks and is frustrating to play. Not fun at all. The so called reallistic physics are to blame. NHL 2K had realistic physics. I'm not paying for the next EA game I want to play. I'm tired of paying for EAs failed attempts at trying to make good games.

I haven't bought or played a hockey game since NHL 93 on the Genesis. I  picked this game up the other day to satisfy my craving to play a hockey game. All I can say is that hockey games have gotten overly complicated. Calling this game a sim doesn't quite do it justice, but it looks sooo damn good.

@WizardGlass  @percuvius2 Agree 100%. Greed fuckers. I love hockey and love playing it. With that said, there guys make ridiculous amounts of money and still bitch. Same with NFL..NBA..MLB etc. Then look at the general economy... Police Officers, Firefighters ( not volunteer) make 30 k - 55k BEST and they put their lives on the line every day. Our society is fucked.

Just to be clear, Hockey players are the least paid pros in sports......some get paid nicely but on average they get paid the least.  For what they endure, lets be fair

@WizardGlass  @percuvius2 They aren't and weren't the ones that asked for a raise, the owners did. Sure, there is a lot of money given to the players salary wise, and I agree with you, but the fact that the owners just had their most payed out revenue sales in the leagues history and now they're asking for more is beyond greedy, and is a complete insult to everyone, including the players. It's all greed, from both sides, but the owners are just terrible, and obviously Gary Buttfuckhairshit needs to get fired, however, I really don't see how that will solve anything considering they will just get a new and dumb greedy commisioner.

@WizardGlass  @percuvius2 The players aren't asking for a raise, they're being asked to take a major cut in pay.  The current salary cap sits around $70,000,000 but based on the owner's proposal, it would drop to the range of $55,000,000.  Meanwhile, the revenues of the NHL as a whole have never been higher.  Since the last lockout in 04/05, revenue has increased over $1,000,000,000.  To take pay cut when the league is making more than ever would be a HUGE concession especially considering the owners were the ones who came up with the current iteration of the CBA in the first place.

If you signed a contract to do your job for $40,000 and your boss came up to you a week later and said "We'd like you to agree to lower your salary to $30,000 because we're making more money" I'd imagine you would be reluctant to allow it.

@percuvius2 Right on man I feel the same way.  I felt that NHL 11 was what I liked about the EA NHL series.  Since then I've kind of soured on EA and always rent before I buy.  I tried NHL 12 and hated it compared to NHL 11 and from what I've read NHL 13 doesn't sound like much of an improvement.  Having no competition to really speak about I think EA rehashes these sports games because sports fans like myself want a new game every year.   With small tweaks here and there but no real improvement to speak of I just don't see myself shelling out 60 bucks for another rehash and from the sound of it a step back in this series.

I wish that there were more competition and there were more than one hockey game to choose from.  Remember the 2k series?  It pushed EA into making a better product which was great for all hockey fans.  I love the NHL series but NHL 13 just seems like a step back to me.

I have nhl13 and i'm not having fun playing it at all. Nhl11 was the best one. don't buy nhl13, huge waste of  money. I wish 2K was still making hockey games cause thats the one I would have bought this year.

I rented NHL 13 but didnt like it.  I found the directions so unwieldy that i couldnt get the players to do what i wanted half the time.  Granted, that just takes some time and practice to master the advanced controls, but i just wanted to play not study the manual for which button is pass.....R2?  Seriously?  Thats weird.

Its a great game but it definitely takes mastery of earlier versions or some hardcore learning curve patience....i had neither.

Its a must for hockey fans, a bust for the casual sports gamer.

I pretty much buy NHL each year so I can play EASHL Drop-In games, yet this guy doesn't touch on it once. But I've played the early release and have purchased it.  I like how they brought back the stack tracking for drop-in games, this way every time I get a goal or assist it doesn't say "that's his first career point" every time lol

This is most STUPID nhl review i have ever seen!!!There is written ''Another tweak is with the ratings system''.WTF!!!It is a new improved rating system from ea.In this system player overall depends on defensive skills too, not only offensive skills and points like in previous NHL's.And player ratings is determined by NHL scouts, not by those dumbasses from ea!That's why Richards is better than Kessel.Richards is very skilled in defense!!!

The new skating engine is a significant new feature. And the AI is "too good" no offense to the reviewer, but maybe he's just not so good at the game. The AI is better, but it's nowhere near as perfect as this guy thinks.

@xSlugox Actually Gamespot sports games reviewers are casual sports gamers only. If you want real feedback on sports games, go to operationsports.com. As a regular NBA 2K gamer, I'm really surprised about how shallow the reviews are. It's like they really just play the games because it's their job and not really playing them as a real sports video gamer.
